  1. You kid yourself if you think we are close to a playoff contention team with "a few moves". Callahan isn't going to help that, and I don't believe for a moment he'd sign with Buffalo given what we are right in the middle of. We have another full season of suck before it begins to take shape in my opinion. And even then it's just taking shape, not forming into a playoff team. 2 seasons away yet is my estimation.

Really? If we re-signed ott and moulson and got a top 6 forward along with keeping miller and getting RC? We would easily get into the playoffs. We would probably lose in the first round though.

I don't think so. I think $6 mill is a slight overpayment (I think $5.5 is a fair price) so I might not make the jump up to $7 mill. Wouldn't be terribly upset if they did, though.

The market will say he is worth at least 6-7

I think for Kane to come to Buffalo you are looking at something like 7years 8-9mil per year. Of course I think he resigns in Chicago.

Yup maybe even higher depending on cap.

But if his response to that offer is "make it $7MM x 7 years and we have a deal; otherwise I'm signing with XXX" -- do you go up to $7MM? Isn't it worth that last $1MM to land him?

I don't think it's necessary to converse like this to make your point.

As for the 2nd bolded part -- I would guess it's more a case of him being open to coming here than him targeting Buffalo and saying "that's where I want to be and I'll take less $$ to sign there." That's a pretty unrealistic scenario given where the team is now and the options that will be available to him.

The Sabres are going to need to be the highest bidders if they want to land him.

Sorry if that was bad? I wasnt calling him dumb...... I like LGRs posts a lot and like debating with him on a topic such as this. He is one of a select few that can go back and forth while debating points and providing info and explanation.

  2. That isn't at all what I said or meant. What I mean is zemgus thrives on challenges and that will make him better. I don't think giving him rc is going to be the difference between him reaching his ceiling or not. Zemgus thrives on being challenged. Your point about the tam screwing him to make him better or whatever you are suggesting was not at all what I meant.

Why not try to get the best players that we can to play with our most promising rookie? I think he is going to get to his ceiling no matter what because of the things you said. But you made it out like we should challenge him with lesser linemates. Callahan on this roster and on his line makes the team better. It will make him better as well. I dont think its going to be the difference between Z and his ceiling but I most certainly think that it would improve the teams ceiling immensely.

  3. Now we are talking in circles. I disagree. I stated why I disagree. I still disagree no matter how many times you say otherwise. The Girgensons point is a completely separate can of worms. Also you missed my point on him. Zemgus will thrive and improve without Ryan Callahan. He has that drive and that is what makes him special. I personally think the harder you make it for zebus the better he will be in the long run because he thrives on challenges. That is neither here nor there. I like Callahan. I'd give him 6mil but again I am at 5 years because I worry about his long term health, his long term ability to produce, and the cap implications in 6-7years with so many young players.

I understand your money points and i have stated why i disagree with it. However , your point about Z is absolutely dumb. Make it harder for him to succeed to make him better? That makes zero sense and absolutely no GM thinks that way. No team on earth is going to try to not improve on purpose because it might have a chance of making a player better? That wont work.

If he's looking for $6MM x 7 years, which I think is what's been reported, the Sabres will need to go to $7MM x 7 years. You may not view that as borderline insane for Callahan, but I think LGR and many others will -- including many respectable NHL writers/observers.

FWIW, I would be very happy for the Sabres to sign him to that deal.

Not if he wants to come to Buffalo. I think we can get him for less than 7 million but I would give him up to 7 million.

I'm sure Kane is very happy in ChiTown but it looks like most of the "Blackhawk for life" came from GM and Toews....

    http://www.usatoday....g-camp/2802181/

That is what I said, The GM was quoted as saying it....

  4. If you want him you're going to have to give him a borderline insane contract.

between 6-7 million isnt insane..... It is his market value and what he is looking to get from the Rangers. The Rangers GM has said and so have hockey writers all over that he deserves that kind of money. The rangers cant give it to him because they tried to circumvent rules before the CBA with front loaded deals. Which means that they are going to have an invisible player making 5.75 million dollars a year in all likelihood.

    Don't be a sarcastic ass.

This team will not make the playoffs next year because of rc

That is why there was a 1-3. It doenst make sense to say girgs can do it on his own, why not surround him with the kind of talent that can help him thrive? Guess what after he plays with callahan, he will be even better. Then when he comes up on his UFA season, callahans contract will be ending and he will be the one getting the 8-9% of cap contract.

  5. Apparently. I personally don't think Girgensons needs anyway to help him, he has the drive to do it on his own. Much like Zadorov doesn't need someone he can just do it.

Why even give him wingers then? Heck we should eliminate a defensive pair as well. He can just go out there alone and do it. Callahan at six million a season is a dream scenario to lead this rebuild out of the basement and into the playoffs in 1-3 years.

  6. Not sold on Callahan based on his injury history and age. Girgensons is Callahan 2.0 and eight years younger. In two more seasons Girgensons will be exactly what Callahan was in his prime. I can wait.

So you have a third line of Girgs Callahan and Foligno. Shutdown! Also Girgs plays center. Also doesnt have the scoring touch that Callahan does. Playing with RC can only help Girgs develop into a player like him.

I think they should mortgage their entire franchise on figuring out how to get #88 out of Chicago (legally or illegally.) Starting making bribes and promises to every family member extending out to 3rd cousins. Start building the statue that will replace the French connection and rename the construction project The Kane Center. There has to be a way and with the first or 2nd pick the next two years, the rising of the young D and the signing of Miller, the Cup will arrive in stunning fashion no later than 2017.

We will know if Kane wants to be here if he signs an extension. Which according to the Chicago GM they have it in the works. Including him saying "Kane and Toews WILL be Blackhawks for life".

  7. Just wanted to say to Foligno's Jock I think you did great work with how you made your point today. I know you didn't get ###### done at work though cause you were defending your position all day! Good job but you never answered my question in all of this an I think it will impact my decision on renewing season tickets at the time when you say we can easily work this deal. How much will the ###### beers cost in the arena when the salary cap hits $100 million dollars?

Idk i think we have the cheapest beer in the NHL currently. So it might hit 9 bucks

  8. Girgensons is a #3 center, ideally. Grigo, as we all know, hasn't impressed. Compher, I haven't seen enough of. Larsson is at a PPG in Rochester, but he's not impressing me that much, either, for some reason.

Hodgson would be an excellent #2 center and is a passable #1 center.

    That's about it.

So we have two #2 centers one in which you want in a checking line role. However our center needs are not as dire as they were two years ago. If even one of these guys progresses fast, which is pretty likely we are looking at a pretty good stable of centers.

Plus a pretty easy way of making a good center is giving him good wingers.

  9. Do me a favor and get a clue. The point about the 2007 team is that we were one dimensional and lost too much of our toughness. That doesn't mean tough (or concept of tough) is better than talent.

And if Kassian is so awesome, why aren't you on here praising Marcus Foligno every day? Kassian has 16 points and 60 hits this year for a good team. Foligno has 14 points and *135* hits for a terrible team. Have fun with that.

This is what I dont get.... Foligno is doing what kassian is supposed to be doing at this phase of their development on a team that has scored 41 less goals than Vancouver.

  10. I would give him 10mil X 3years if it meant that in 6-7years I don't have 35 yr old Ryan Callahan on my team.

I agree that it is the type of player I would overpay. My issue is the contract length and $ amount.

The only reason you need to get rid of him is if the rebuild works like we want it to. At that point it will be simple to retain salary and trade him or just trade him. Again look at what the blackhawks have done. If he really isnt helping the team at all and no one wants him then he would likely retire/take a paycut/ get buried in the AHL. This isnt that difficult.

  11. No disagreement there. But if you're going to overpay for a UFA relative to his stats, a heart-and-soul guy like Callahan who is a reliable 20-25 goal scorer, a team captain, will have just turned 29 and fills a desperate need (i.e. top 6 forward) is the guy to overpay.

No one's talking about throwing money at another Leino just because it's there and he's there.

He did indeed say that, which is a good reason to be skeptical that they will go hog wild about Callahan.

I just feel like how many players can we possibly draft? Who else are we gonna trade or trade for? In two years who are we paying all this money we have to? 55 million dollars worth of cap space projected for the 15-16 season. The only way we can get into cap trouble with a deal like this is if our draft turns us into the blackhawks. That is the problem that we want!

  12. You guys are complaining about being in a blackhawks situation where all their young talent panned out and they didn't have enough money to keep everyone...... do you guys really think that is a problem? That is the type of problem I would love to be in! And what did they do? they dealt away the veteran leadership of the team because the kids had become the leadership. Which is exactly what we want to happen. Heck I think in two of those deal they ended up getting those veterans back at a bargain because they loved the team and loved winning!

I am looking at 5 years away not 2. Again we disagree on his worth. I wouldn't pay him 42 when i think he is only worht 30 at most. It is what it is.

you arent paying him 30! You are paying him 6per. Stop acting like years arent involved. or would you be cool with giving him 10mil for 3 years?

  13. Umm how can we rework his 7yr deal in 5 years? Make up your mind what you are willing to give him because that is the debate. it has nothing to do with his character. It has to do with how much and how long you are willing to pay him.

As much as we want if he wants to stay on the team....... we have the cap room right now to give him this deal which is the sad part since we have so much crap buried or retained. that is with the leino and stafford deals on the books.

For the 8.5 that leino and stafford arte making we have foligno and callahan instead.

We have 55 million dollars to spend in two years. Unless we are gonna go crazy with UFAs there is no way this contract puts us into any kind of trouble.
