  1. Oreilly is making $5M per.

Staal is getting $6M per and is only 23 years old. Not turning 30.

Both of those guys are young and arguably better two way forwards. O'Reilly has 20 goals this year already.

You are wrong. O'Reilly makes 6.5m.

Neither is a better two way forward. They are young and they are getting that money because they are supposed to become like callahan is. Staal is there and that is why he got the long contract which is the only reason he isnt making more than 7 million.

  2. I like Callahan, but you are spot with your take,

I am of the opinion, just because Pegula has the resources to over pay every player in the league, it doesn't mean it should be done. Callahan is not a $6 -7 mil year player by any standard. A team will probably pay it, The only way it makes sense for the Sabres if the signing is used in a way to show other players around the league they are serious about turning things around. I just don't see it as a wise investment in the Sabres future.

    And neither are worth it.

Well more than one GM thought that they were. Which means that they are worth it. A player is worth what a GM is willing to pay, and there will be numerous GMs willing to pay 6-7 for Callahan. There is absolutely zero reason that we shouldn't give callahan that contract we have NOTHING to lose. We have the most desireable cap situation in the entire league and the ONE AND ONLY way we can get into cap trouble in 4-7 years is if we have 4-5 prospects become top players in the league where they will need 7 million+ themselves. That is a situation that we want to be in!

It is the situation the blackhawks have been in. Who doesnt want that? The worst thing that could happen is that terry needs to buy out callahan towards the end or he could bury the contract if he cant retain some salary and trade him away. WE HAVE NOTHING TO LOSE!

  3. Well first off Sam Reinhart is a center, as for the rest of the roster we would need to start a new thread. I like Callahan but I don't like him at 7mil for 7years. 7mil for 2 years, sure why not? But for a long time making way to much money, it is just to much.

I did look at the 7mil a year guys who got contracts at or around a similar cap. We are talking 60-70pt a year guys. Callahan is a 50-60pt a year guy.

Jordan Staal, Ryan O'reilly. Those guys are callahan type players and that is the money they got.

  4. Take a look at the players making 7mil per year. Ryan Callahan on a good day falls below 6mil per year.

I think you could actually do it. There can't be something like 20%(?) difference between years.

look at the ones who got their contract recently the 6-7 million guys are all in callahans class

  5. I think realistically going forward we can expect Callahan to have 20g and 30-35a in a full season. I think that can be +/- 5-10 points but the fact remains you don't pay a 60pt a year forward 6.75mil for 7 years. It just doesn't make good financial sense.

Maybe not three years ago. But this year you certainly do

  6. There were and are other professional leagues than the NHL.

Not in Russia there werent. The best Russian players were on that 1980 team.

The KHL formed in 2008, the superleague in 1999. The Russian team comprised of all "professionals" their oldest player in 1980 was 35 years old. Ours was 25.

  7. This doesn't make any sense to me. First, I can't think of any of our players who will be commanding big raises in the next few years, unless you think Murray is going to give Ennis a Hodgson type deal and even if that was the case we'd still have plenty of room to fit Callahan and an overpaid Ennis. Secondly, if you don't want Callahan next year, why would you want him in 3 years when he'd be 3 years older, still commanding a high cap hit, and we're 3 years closer to some of our better prospects like Girgensons, Zadarov, Ristoleinen, and our next 2 1st round tank picks heading towards bigger contracts? Even if we paid Callahan $8 million (which I hope we don't) that's still half a million less than the cap hits of Stafford and Leino combined.

I have made this argument over 9 pages in the rumours thread. The only way we can get in cap trouble by signing Callahan is if each and every one of our prospects realized their potential and realizes it earlier than projected. Then we would have just too dang many top six forwards, and for some reason people on this board think that is a problem.

  8. Apparently I have walked into a Mighty Taco jihad.

I will now concede, realizing that further arguing will only make me hungrier for things I don't want to pay the shipping for.

seriously considering ordering a dozen of them......

  9. Aahaha. I live 2500 miles away and I know what that is.

    <- Not a terrorist.

    Also, he's the terrorist:

sour cream is delicious and truly completes the super mighty!

NOw I did have them with guac as well after the worlds largest disco, those were banging as well!

  10. We've got kids in the system already who we KNOW we're going to have to pay at some point. I see no need to lock up Callahan for seven years. I'll take him in a trade in 3 years though. I don't see the point unless we're adding him for a playoff push.

There literally is NO ONE in the system who is going to command a salary in RFA that would put us in cap trouble.

  11. absolutely

no doubt. I wouldn't bring my family.

    I've wondered this.

On a side note, I saw on ESPN that the snowboarding freestyle course had to be modified after several complaints from the athletes, and finally one breaking his collarbone (a Finnish athlete I believe that was thought to be a medal contender). brings up the question, why weren't the courses looked at prior to athletes to using the hills. Don;t they have to have inspections or anything like that? I thought the olympics were tightly governed?

The snowboard stuff isnt being modified, they built it larger because there will be melting. People get hurt snowboarding all the time its just if you are unlucky. Shawn White is riding with numerous injuries sustained over the last few months

  12. Wow, I would have figured a straight swap of Vanek for Seguin would have been an overpayment by Buffalo, but now everyone is throwing in additional players from the Sabres to make the deal? Vanek could have expressed that he wanted out and was not going to re-sign in Buffalo, but he still had a year left on his deal, and it was no secret the Bruins weren't happy with Seguin, so that would cancel out one team being desperate to move their guy.

look at what they got from Dallas. He was worth A LOT. I would still say the Dallas deal was better than the one I made with Vanek included. Yes vanek was the best player in that trade currently but in two to three years 3 of those guys will probably be outplaying him or at least worth more to their team

  13. Still some Miller to Anaheim rumors flying around (not just from Ek)... seems crazy for Anaheim to mess with their goaltending situation given that they've gotten very strong play from Hiller and Andersen and have Gibson waiting in the wings... but I guess if they really want to win the Cup this year then Miller might be a reasonable option given his (not so recent) playoff experience.

I'd take Gibson in a second if they were willing to move him.

Yeah having Gibson would be nice

  14. Have mixed emotions regarding Olympic hockey. No doubt each Olympics great hockey is played. My concern at times is with the competition between nations as opposed to individuals from all nations on individual times competing as in NHL , the bad feeling between nations that can ensue, troubles me. NHL games we see great players working together on their respective teams, while regular season can become boring at times, the current tournament that is the NHL playoffs, each year also compelling. It a marvel how at end the two left standing compete for Cup.

    I love the bad blood!

  15. So while everyone waits for the inevitable decline of Stafford, what if, just maybe, Ted Nolan was the answer to making Drew Stafford the player he is now and this continues?

This is where having a new management team in place is good because they don't have to look at the history of Stafford.

I don't think he's going anywhere. His cap hit is $4MM and that's going to be spot on for where he ends up on this roster.

Lock him up for 2 million a year. 4 Million is way too high for where he is going to be

He is most definitely not in this class

  16. It was just one of two examples (one of which was incorrect as you pointed out) of teams purposefully acquiring the top pick in the past for a generational talent. Those examples taken together was also just one of several signs the Sabres were willing to actually see the tank through (into next year) and really restock the cupboard. My point stands.

In fact I was misremembering who tanked for whom. It wasn't for Lemieux and Crosby as I stated but Pittsburgh's coach admitted they tanked for Lemieux, and the NHL investigated Ottawa losing on purpose for Daigle, thus instituting the lottery system moving forward.

My memory of the draft process was hazy too. I remembered the Sabres had the same number of chances as the Penguins, but I also remember your chance was reduced if you had the #1 pick recently, so I looked it up. The Sabres, Penguins, Blue Jackets and Rangers all had the best chance (three balls in the lottery). Not sure why the Penguins don't seem to have been penalized for drafting Fleury 1st in '03, although it might have to do with recent playoff appearances also.

In my search, I also happened on this video, which shows how the draft lottery works now (or at least how it worked last year):

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lWVtqAQzjYY

So we had an equal shot for crosby? Gosh WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN?

  17. The Sabres may be forced to give up more than money however if the deal is a trade and sign. They are not competing against UFA anymore. Now they are competing against another team willing to offer him money AND what that team will give to the Rangers to get him in the first place.

So in that situation the Sabres are not only forced to pay for Callahan but also give up something just to get him and sign him.

exactly which is why i am willing to give up larsson and a pick to be the team that gets to sign him to the deal. However I wouldnt give anything more. I dont think there will be a huge market for signing rights which is what this basically is because a contender isnt giving up roster players.

  18. Who?

Check out my sig and then replace it with the prorating contracts calculator. A lot of people on this board want us to avoid signing a great free agent because of the hypothetical of all of our rookies and future draft picks panning out and somehow commanding enough cap to get us into trouble. Which is of course unlikely and the exact problem you want to have as a GM.
