  1.

Eleven -- well said on the rest of your post, but what does the sentence I quoted mean? That Mogilny is the most recent of the sabres' all-time top 10 scorers?

Nope--I meant that Mogilny was a top 10 scorer in the league when with Buffalo.

    And like you said--Go Sabres!

  2. Your response is so full of false premises it's hard to know where to begin.

Did you read my post or just make faulty assumptions about what I suggested?

"Do you really need to check on a message board to realize that the Sabres are not bonafide Stanley Cup contenders this season?"

    NO

"Many of us here have varying opinions on those subjects, but that does not prevent us from enjoying the run the Sabres have been on this season."

Neither does it prevent me from enjoying their improvement, but I see a lot of room for more.

"If your sole criterion for a successful and / or enjoyable season is a SC victory parade, then the fans of 97% of the teams will not get any enjoyment out of their teams this year."

No, it is not my sole criterion, but it is my primary criterion and what an obviously ridiculous conclusion.

"Comparing Buffalo to Ottawa is really foolish."

You can say that again! It is like they are in a different league. What is Buffalo going to do to catch them? Standing pat is not adequate.

"If winning the Cup is your sole criterion for success..."

NO, but nothing ranks higher! Ask every GM and player what is their criterion for success - "winning the Cup!"

"Also, you will not get 2 quality skaters coming into the organization for Marty."

    How do you know that?

"You want a "top 50 scorer", but what are you willing to give up to get him?"

Martin Biron or a package of lesser players like Noronen plus a player like Grier,Afinogenov, Connolly, Kotalik etc.

"Do you even realize that Briere is that mythical "top 50 scorer" when he is healthy? "

Possibly, but I didn't realize he was playing now. Is it too much to ask to have a scorer in the top 50? Jeez, you have low expectations. I guess I'm old enough to remember the Sabres when they had guys in the top 10. You probably weren't even born.

"the only 2 teams that I think would definitely win a playoff series against the Sabres are the Sens and Devils. I don't have a good handle on how they match up with Carolina (but the homer in me says they can and would beat them), but I really like the matchups with TB and Atlanta, and expect that they would win a series against NY or the Flyers. They would beat Montreal and should beat Toronto if either gets in. Florida would kill them, but guess what, Florida is going golfing in May.

What team other than NJ (who they might face in the 1st round) or Ottawa (who they most likely won't face in the 1st round) overmatch the Sabres?"

I love the way you just breeze through the Rangers, Flyers, Leafs,Hurricanes like it's just a formality. The Sabres only obstacles are NJ and Ottawa?

    You must be kidding!!

Please register (even under that great screenname), especially if you're going to be that condescending. Many of us disagree on things, but Dave B. has always been civil, and I would expect him to be treated similarly.

My guess is that he's watched the Sabres long enough to see our top 10 scorers (which at max goes back to Mogilny; not exactly old-time material)..

And if you asked most of us at the beginning of the year--when you may or may not have been reading this board (note again about your lack of registration)--we would have been happy to see a mere playoff spot. Especially some of us that lived elsewhere and came back (e.g., me) or others who may still live away. Now that this quite amazing season is afoot, we're hoping for more, and having fun hoping. That's fun in itself.

Cool if you hang out, but don't be a dick.

  3. --There are a bunch of you who would have called Jagr's goal "soft," if Biron had been in net.

--If the Rangers were the 4th place team, I don't want the Sabres to finish merely 4th. The Rangers looked horrible.

--I can't stand Kasparaitis, but the hit was clean, and I hope Connolly is well.

  4. First off Brad Riter is never right.

As far as the other point about the replay official? Goal judges are the same every game.

Come on guys. It's a bad call. They happen. You can go to fans of every team and they can list you bad calls that compare to the ones the Sabres had to deal with. They just happen. If you want to eliminate them then play every game on an X-Box.

Before Buffalo fans start to think the world is against us. Take a look at one of this area's greatest sports moments. The Bills comback over Houston. Don Beebe took two steps out of bounds before he caught a huge TD. That call cost Houston the game and their franchise.

Ask Philly how they felt when Bob Nystrom was two strides offsides before he scores and the Islanders went on to win the Cup.

They happen. If they didn't then sports talk would be pretty boring.

    ;)

As for the "one bad call," assuming you mean the goal, I'm more concerned that the officiating crew didn't follow the correct process, than I am that a bad call against the Sabres. As you said, bad calls happen. But there is a procedure in place to review those calls, the procedure wasn't followed, and that undermines fans' confidence in the league.

Same goes for all the missed interference/obstruction calls last night. If the league wants to allow that type of play, that's fine. If not, that's fine too. But let's have the same set of rules every night. I know, different crews call games differently in every contact sport; some have more of a "let 'em play" attitude than others. Last night just seemed to be outside the standard deviation, though.

  5. three quick points on some of the above posts:

    1. Riter's point is dead on, as is the post about all the obstruction that wasn't called last night. How am I supposed to love the "new NHL" when in some games, the refs are still partyin' like it's 1999?

    2. While I'm no fan of ESPN.com's hockey coverage, ESPN didn't write the game summary. It's attributed to the AP (who may have got it from a CP stringer). ESPN didn't vet the article, obviously, and doesn't review most of its wire reports (which is one reason I don't like that website).

    3. I'm nearly positive that the same replay official is used in HSBC Arena for every regular-season game; just can't think of the guy's name right now, but I remember that he's a former ref. I doubt that he's "provided by" the Sabres, though, in the sense that the Sabres pay him; he's gotta be paid by the league, right?

  6. If I remain sitting in an upright position on the coach, I have a 10% chance that I stay awake for the whole game. Laying down on the coach or in bed, I'll be asleep half way through the first period. Sucks getting old and having to get up early.

Same here. Early meeting every Friday am. And a beer or a cocktail during a late game? Forget it.

  7. Its been awhile since the Sabres scored 10 goals........Does anyone know when the last time was?

    Feb. 24, 1993 v. Detroit.

Last time two Sabres scored 3 apiece: Dec. 31, 2003 v. Washington (Afinogenov and Satan).

Last natural hat trick: Dec. 4, 2002 v. Anaheim (Curtis Brown).

Last rookie hat trick: Dec. 1, 1993 at Tampa Bay (Derek Plante).

The last bit of information took some figuring, but I think it's correct.

  8. January 13, 2004

    * * *

Jeremy Roenick was tossed from the game for throwing a water bottle and striking referee Blaine Angus, who did not call a penalty on Rory Fitzpatrick, whose stick came up and cut Roenick late in the game.

But it was the water bottle's fault. Roenick did nothing wrong, and probably wasn't even in the arena at the time. In fact, Fitzpatrick was impersonating Roenick at the '98 Olympics and that's what made Roenick--whom I repeat was not present--upset.

  9. I hear Rick DiPietro got hurt today not sure how bad but maybe that is the opening that miller needs for the olympics. I really do not want to see him over there he could A. Burn out or B. get smoked by all the talent and become a head case.

Is it confirmed that Danny is gonna be out for the hernia???

Also read that Alexei Zhitnik got hurt too take care Islanders

Agree with you and the others that maybe Miller doesn't need the Olympic team (as badly as it may need him) right now. We need him in April. And May. And June!

  10. I dont think biron had a bad game at all, the shootout was a little shaky, and perhaps he was a bit out of position for the one goal (still not sure about that), but overall I think he played an overall decent game and made many big saves for us. I absolutely think he had a better game than miller did vs the islanders.

Also I agree with the kotalik thing, I personally would have liked to see max in there in place of ales

If it weren't for goaltending (tonight it was Biron but Miller may have been able to do the same), there would not have been a shootout. The defense was horrible tonight, especially in the first and second periods. During one stretch in the first, the Sabs couldn't clear the puck in 3+ minutes of clock time.

Afinogenov or Connolly really should lead every shootout.

  11. (to nfreeman)

    1. I'll bet. But MSG isn't so much better. Watching HNiC reminds me of what hockey should look like on TV.

    2. That's not just a random side. Max needs to stop taking bad penalties. (But I loved his elbow to Crosby tonight--no call.)

    3. Yes. And he did last season, too. That kid is a keeper.

    4. It's reported as a sore hip last night; let's see whether he plays on Monday before panicking. And even if he's out some more, well, this team seemed to be able to win in his absence recently. But hope he's back Monday.

    5. Nuts to you. We know the streak, and during the home and home against the pits, he cost only one softie (the second goal last night) and made some great saves. Then again, look up my earlier posts on Biron; I have a different opinion of him than most of this board (and this city) has.

    6. The Sabres have a guy named Peters?

    7. Connolly is playing better than most 22-yr-olds I can remember on this team. The kid really has come on. The trade looks better every day, presently, but I still wonder what the team could've done with one more year of Peca and Hasek together.

Side topic: A public apology to one Brian Campbell. I said you'd never amount to an NHLer, and I said it often. You're still slow, but I'm still very wrong. Awesome pass last night.

  12. biron somehow gets a 10 game winning streak record for the sabres.

The "somehow" is that he's considerably better than most of this board thinks. How many2-goal games were there in that 10-game streak? As I've stated before, he's probably not the future. But give him credit where it's due. In fact, I wouldn't expect Miller to start until Biron--and I mean Biron, not the team--loses one.

  13. Decent job? Were you watching the same game as me?

Pretty sure I was. 28 stops, a couple of which were nice (but not robberies), same as Giguere. Not terrific, hardly horrible, just decent. This board has a tendency to be overly critical of Biron. He's done pretty well as a backup, and tonight, while he let in one really weak goal (#2) and one that wasn't quite as weak as reported here (#1), he got the job done again.

That said, yes, I'm looking forward to Miller's return, but I'm also confident that the team makes the playoffs even with this horrible sieve named Biron.

  14. Heh, I'm stuck listening to the NHL radio feed, which of course is delayed a little, so when I heard that Vanek was getting a penalty shot I looked here and found out he made it before hearing it. Yay for Vanek.

You're not going to like what you hear right...NOW.
