  1. I don't care if they follow the HNL protocol to call Toronto, a 5-minute review is too long. You can always find a excuse if you keep looking for it.

The puck was rolling and doing a dance before finally landing flat on the ice possibly touching the goal line. Now can anyone tell me if the puck EVER cross the goal line BEFORE it laying on the ice flat? I definetly think so. I think they ruled it a goal based on the time when the puck ws completely flat on the ice.

Since it was already very close when it finally stays flat, simple geometry should tell you that the puck has crossed the line while most of the puck still was in the air. Based on this, I think all replay angles were inconculsive, therefore GOAL.

No excuse, and as I said in my post, I didn't have the benefit of many replays (so I can't comment on the result, but I relied on Lindy Ruff's acceptance of it). My comments were directed to several posts above which questioned the process, not the result. The offficials followed the process that is in place right now. The process is stupid, the result sucked, but the correct process was followed.

  2. Random points on random posts, and otherwise:

    1) I was at the game, so I didn't get the benefit of many replays on the goal that was called back. But if Ruff, after the game, acknowledges it wasn't a goal (he so stated on WGR), that's good enough for me.

    2) The refs actually followed their protocol on that call and phoned Toronto. That's the deal in the NHL; like the result or not, they followed the rules.

    3) There was no lack of spirit, heart, etc. tonight, with the exception of a brief stretch in the first, just after Ottawa went up 2-0. It's natural to slightly deflate at that point, but the boys came back.

    4) It was fun watching the chase with Ottawa for first, but lost in the excitement was this: While the Sabres are a very good and very exciting team, Ottawa is the best team the league has seen in some time. Yes, even without Chara (who hopefully graces our blueline next season). A whipping by Atlanta bothers me much more than a 3-1 loss to the Sens. The Sabres might go all the way, they may not, but if they fail to get past Ottawa in the playoffs, I'm not going to cry about it.

    5) That said, sometimes games turn on breaks, and I don't mean those breaks that the zebras create. How many passes jumped over Sabre sticks tonight due to unlucky bounces (even early in a period on supposedly smooth ice)? How many posts did Buffalo hit? It was an unlucky game, but a well-played game against a better opponent who got the breaks.

    6) I like Miller, but Hasek stops at least one if not both of those first two goals (if he's healthy). Yes, I know they weren't "his fault." Just sayin'.

    7) When does Kalinin get back from injury? There's some guy in his sweater out on the ice, but who is it?

    8) Mike Grier is one of my favorite players on this team (see my ridiculed post from three weeks ago re: he should be considered for the Selke). But someone needs to remove the concrete from his skates before important games.

  3. Wasn't that a little bit of an excessive call on Peters? Where is the call on Mellanby for taking a hack at him?

I don't think it was excessive at all. The hit on Mellanby was gratuitous and was obviously calculated to start a fight; Mellanby's reaction was pretty tame considering the circumstances.

The first penalty (holding) was simple rough stuff; the second was the dumbest thing I've seen a Sabre do in a long time. Why Paille isn't with the team right now is a mystery to me.

  4. Don't put words in my mouth.

They don't play 60 minutes of hockey, but they've been good enough to win without having to against most teams. This is one game where they had to, and they knew it going in, but STILL didn't. 49 shots against, please don't tell me you think they actually played well, or even remotely to their ability......

Didn't see last night's game, but I know what you mean. I've only noticed it in a few games (e.g. Philly) after the Olympic break, and in virtually no games between mid-November and the break. Here's the thing: most NHL teams don't play 60 minutes of good hockey in a regular season game. The Sabres actually are better than most at playing hard throughout a full game, but I agree that lately it looks like they're taking some time off & getting away with it. As long as it stops come April, I'm ok with it.

  5. He must have saw something he liked from Max tonight. He was out there for a long time during that last shift. My only other thought is that Lindy wanted to give him some of that high pressure ice time to see what he could do.

Friends and I discussed this during the last minute. Our consensus: Ruff wanted speed v. speed during the last minute, rather than Grier's shut-down skills v. speed. Good call, as most of Ruff's calls have been this year.

  6. I believe Marty will get the start tomorrow(he was getting it regardles of today game) and then Ruff will come right back with Miller against the Captials.

The Craps might be just the thing for a guy who has struggled the last two games. One incredible goal-scorer and 21 other skaters who are just plain bad.

  7. 1994 Hasek would have looked bad for team USA in the olympics. With that said, i'm glad that marty was not traded... Miller will have to step up and fill in for the lack of support he's receiving right now

Miller looked bad on Thursday and he doesn't look good so far today. Rob Ray, for once, was right on during the break: Miller is going down too early. Possibly a sign of fatigue (Ray pointed this out) but my thought is it's just something he needs to fine-tune in his game right now.

Lack of support? Yes, two turnovers today have been a big problem. But 8 goals on Thursday, well, how much more support should a goalie count on?

  8. It'd sure be nice to have 18 guys with 30+ goals and 50+ assists but that's NEVER happened in the history of the game and it never will. Every team needs guys who are willing to grind and do the little things (like killing penalties, facing the other teams number one, etc). The Wings had the grind line (Maltby, Draper, McCarty) when they were winning Cups, the Devils were littered with guys like Marshall, Pandolfo, Stevenson, John Madden, etc. That's just a couple of examples

That's what it takes to be successful and keep your stars fresh for PPs and late game heroics. Mike Grier is a VERY important player to our success.

You're damned right he is. Best defensive forward the Sabs have had since Peca, and he plays a cleaner game, too, which means he gets to kill penalties instead of take them. His ability as a d-forward is underappreciated throughout the league (actually, that might help come May).

  9. They are not journalists, they are sports talk show hosts. Big difference.

As for Ray sticking up for Miro in the past, well that was his job. I know a lot of people that work real hard for bosses they don't like and with coworkers they don't like. That Robbie doesn't like Miro doesn't surprise me in the least. Whether to play Miro or Ronan was one of the several issues that Nolan and Muckler could not agree upon. Also, it seems that a LOT of the Sabres had issues with playing with Miro.

Fair point on the difference between journalists and sports talk hosts. Don't know if you watched the exchange I saw, but it was...unseemly.

  10. Are any of you watching The Shootout? Not sure if I like Ray showing so much joy at his former teammate's lack of success on the island, or if I like Roby's open contempt for Toronto. Fine if we're doing it here, but these guys are supposed to be journalists, right? And didn't Ray stick up for Miro once or twice on the rink?
