  1. Weak goal by all the Pens, including Jarry who waved at it as it went by.
  2. This is my last post on the matter. As @K-9 pointed out, there are definitional meanings and there's meanings the general public uses.
  3. My world is common reality. What's yours?
  4. And yet it's always used to describe a negative and is never considered a compliment. "Congratulations, Johnny! You were falling English but now you're mediocre."
  5. Again, mediocre is a pejorative and does not describe the act of breaking a playoff drought. https://brians.wsu.edu/2016/05/24/mediocre/#:~:text=Although some dictionaries accept the,are almost always more negative.
  6. That we will need close to 100 points to make the playoffs, and doing so won't be mediocre.
  7. That there are 1,312 contests in an NHL season and 2,624 points (and potentially up to 3,936) must be earned between 32 teams. You can't say "all you need is 86 points to make the playoffs" because any point Team A fails to earn is earned by Team B and so on. Last year 2,912 points were earned in total during the 21/22 season. That breaks out to 91 per team.
  8. But those points don't just evaporate. If Florida only has 85 points. Those 30-some points end up on other teams.
  9. If you're "not very good" then you are bad. Mediocre is not a compliment.
  10. Mediocre, by definition, is a disparaging term. The 8th playoff seed Capitals were .610 pts%, or if you prefer the "DeLuca .500" yardstick, .537 wins/losses. That makes them, by definition, above average.
  11. Definition of mediocre: "of only moderate quality; not very good." Definition of average: "constituting the result obtained by adding together several quantities and then dividing this total by the number of quantities." Mediocre, by definition, is a disparaging term.
  12. Uhhhh, you have to beat the 8th place team to make the playoffs, not the 9th. Besting the .512 Islanders gets you 9TH PLACE. You have to be better than the .610 8TH PLACE Capitals to make the playoffs last year. #NotMediocre.
  13. Making the playoffs in the east you can't be mediocre. Not when you need to play .609 hockey to even get a sniff.
  14. Since when is a 100-points mediocre? This isn't the 21- team NHL where 16 teams got in.
  15. That's great. But NHLN isn't on YouTubeTV. I decided to go see the Red Sox tonight anyway. No better time to go when the Sox are dead last, eliminated from the playoffs and tickets are $7.
  16. The game is on MSG but not on ESPN+ so out of town fans can go pound sand.
  17. Here are the Cliff Notes for every hockey projection article you will read this year: Some bad teams made flashy signings. They will improve. The Sabres didn't have any flashy signings. They will still be bad. The end.
  18. Against. They are not finishing bottom 5. Let's make this easy on @Buffalonill. Bottom 5 he wins. Playoffs or top 5 non-playoffs* we win. Everything in between is a push. Sound fair? (To be clear: Top-5 non-playoff means one of the five best records by point% of teams not qualifying for the playoffs. Bottom 5 means one of the five worst point% in the league.)
