Expansion Draft -- Sabres moves and speculation
tom webster replied to SabresBaltimore's topic in The Aud Club
I disagree, that's a good third line on a contender as long as fourth line is fast, skilled and young so they become interchangeable as the season progresses. Then a veteran or two are brought in at deadline to make the fourth line the third line and the third line the fourth for a long playoff run -
I don't know if Kane is coming to Buffalo, but I do know; 1) He has expressed interest as late as last summer in finishing his career here and was concerned that his last mis-step could have hurt those chances. 2) Management in Buffalo has floated the possibility 3) The Sabres are worried about a significant drop in ticket sales this year

Expansion Draft -- Sabres moves and speculation
tom webster replied to SabresBaltimore's topic in The Aud Club
It is in fact true. -
You can try and diversify your selections but ultimately it's about projecting who has the highest upside and hoping to hit a home run. I'd rather have too many top end forwards then have ten low end defenseman. A good GM should be able to flip depth and adjust on the fly.
-
I still don't get this based on need thing. Anyone drafted after the first 5 picks isn't going to see the NHL for 2 probably 3 or 4 years. If we are still looking for defenseman three or four years from now we hired the wrong GM. I'm not used to someone telling me my opinion is ridiculous or my analogies horrible. People disagree with me all the time, but never with such vigor. As for the second paragraph, we will just have to disagree although I will add that you used the team that lost as an example. The team that won seemed to use a different approach.
-
First, I'm not sure what your problem with me is but the personal attacks that preceded your last two responses to my posts were unnecessary. Secondly, to base any draft selection after the first two or three overall on present need is formula for a team stuck in mediocrity.
-
As I'm sure you are aware, it is dangerous to look at these things in a vacuum. drafting defenseman for the sake of them being defensemen is akin to drafting QB's hoping that one works out. Looks good in theory but drafting the best player available is still the best way to go, especially in hockey were the preferred goal is to have 6 stars and 14 interchangeable parts.

Expansion draft and league-wide wheeling and dealing
tom webster replied to Brawndo's topic in The Aud Club
Just because a team asks a player to waive clause doesn't mean they don't want him. They could just be betting that Vegas won't take that player and by waiving NMC the team can protect someone else. -
The College Free Agent Debate: Should the Loophole Exist?
tom webster replied to LGR4GM's topic in The Aud Club
Drafting only two rounds wouldn't stop teams from finding late developing talent, it would just change the way they secure it. -
My point is that it's a loophole when it benefits the player, it's the way it's always been when it benefits the team. Then they should sign everyone. Holding them hostage for two years and then discarding them doesn't make them bigger. Go the NBA route and only draft 2 rounds, then you don't have to worry about loopholes.
-
Actually this has been going on for years, it just didn't get the attention. I don't see it as problem but I don't understand why people think it's terrible when a player chooses not to sign with the team that drafts him but it's alright for the team to walk away from guys they draft. You want to make all players sign with them that drafted them? Then make teams offer contracts to everyone they draft.

Everything Sabres Uniform Related - Royal Blue Please!
tom webster replied to CallawaySabres's topic in The Aud Club
I don't know how to link a tweet but if someone can post the picture Sabres.com tweeted commenmerating the selection of Gil Perrault, I'd like to discuss just what were the original colors. I remember a conversation I had with Rip laughing about how little thought was put into uniforms back then. Colors changedbyear to year, name plates were sewn and parched together after trades. -

I consider myself pretty informed but I had no idea that George McPhee was the Godfather of Matt moulson's wife. -
Head Coach Thread: What / Whom Do You Want, etc.?
tom webster replied to Eleven's topic in The Aud Club
Looks like Bougner to Florida so maybe it's Housley to Buffalo -
Pure math says mores picks increases chances of better draft success and thus I guess theoretically, improves your odds of finding a QB, but hardly guarantees it.
-
A) This offense could be one of the league' best if it stays healthy and finds a solution at WR. B) tanking doesn't work in NFL unless you have Andrew Luck coming out. C) shooting for a playoff spot and still trying to find that franchise QB is not mutually exclusive.
-
My bad. I thought he was a lot smaller. Two things, though, 1) they still could sign him 2) you don't waste 1 of your 50 if you think his upside is AHL.
-
You can succeed in the NHL if your small. You can succeed if you are not terribly fast. You can't succeed if you are both.

tom webster replied to WildCard's topic in The Aud Club
A couple of things; 1) Our group has officially expanded to 20 tickets per game plus 4 club seats that are part of a sub group. 2) We are looking for new partners if anyone is interested, pm me 3) Once schedule comes out and we can target specific games, I may ask for a deposit in order to gauge true interest. Any feedback would be appreciated. -

I agree for the most part although sitting once or twice down three rows up is a whole different experience. Twenty rows up, on the aisle, on the blue line, equi-distant from bathrooms in both directions is nirvana. -

Seats may be even closer together this year as well as we may see an addition of four up close and personal, also in the same area. -
I'm not sure if its the same situation but Benson blew a gasket when Babcock presser was playing as 716 opened up. Started calling him an effin liar and demanding that station be changed.

Expansion Draft -- Sabres moves and speculation
tom webster replied to SabresBaltimore's topic in The Aud Club
Pierre Lebrun just confirmed something I had brought up earlier. Sometime between now and June 21st, Vegas will be able to sign RFA's and UFA's and those signings will count as an expansion pick, i.e. if they signed Girgs and the Sabres didn't match, the Sabres would not lose anybody in the expansion draft. Edit: apparently only applies to unprotected RFA's.
