Who's depressed? I like it when kids die. Moments of silence at sports make me rock hard. I'm a good person and a patriot.

Sn said it better!

What are you using to take the temperature, a standalone temp gauge or the one on the grill? The one on the grill could be broken/misreading. Good call.

Is there something wrong with your burners?

I love this constant excuse making and endless hypotheticals people trot out as an excuse for not trying. Cowardice. How about this? Don't loan your guns to people. That goes for militias too. Ain't no militia doing anything important enough to let people walk out the door with their guns keep em locked up or in your doomsday army play time circle-jerk compound or go to prison. I also love the endless deliberate misreading in order to take simple ideas and make them absurd. Where did I say I don't want an 18 year old being able to buy a gun? If an 18 year old wants to buy Winchester Super 70 then let him. A Henry .22? Sure. Antique double-barrel that belonged to your great grandfather? Absolutely, come down to the gun store and we'll take care of transferring ownership to you. It might take a day or two, but you're an 18 year old American and you're not going to go on a colossal rampage with any of those pieces. Need a semi-automatic rifle and some hollow points to hunt bobcats (or whatever) on your family's ranch though? You're going to have to jump through a few more hoops friend. I'm not proposing anything earth shattering here. I'm sick of all the quitters and do-nothingers.

This is exactly my point. The only thing in our way is people with bad attitudes who are okay with kids dying. This kid's guns were legally purchased, but he should never have been able to purchase those guns at 18 years old. We don't even let people rent cars until they're 25. Children are dead because a bunch of people who think "tyranny" is a problem are willing to foist the consequences of their fears upon children. And the problem for NYS is all the states around us with bad gun laws. Many of the guns used in gun crimes in NY come from outside of the state. There's a fun map out there somewhere that shows where the guns come from in each state, and NYS is a victim of the complete lack of comprehensive national gun purchasing policies. There are too many holes.

Guns don't come from the aether. They're made and sold and stolen and trafficked right here in the USA. Make them harder to buy and you reduce the pool of guns being bought for crime and trafficked across state lines. Make owners take more responsibility for their weapons so they can't be stolen during burglaries or robberies. Don't let pawn shops sell guns period. Illegal guns, like drugs, come from somewhere. You'll never eliminate the supply, but you can reduce it. Give law enforcement a fight they can actually win.

Easier, AND more likely, AND more catastrophic. Reduce the ease with which people can acquire firearms and you reduce the rate not only of gun crimes, but other violent crimes as well. This isn't an opinion, it's a fact. And it doesn't just apply to gun crimes. You can do this with a lot of different variables. Reduce the ability of someone to steal a car and you reduce the ability of them to commit a crime with that car. Reduce the ability of someone to evade surveillance at a target, you reduce the availability of targets to victimize. Reduction is the key word. Reduction. It's time for us to start pushing some buttons on gun violence. The guns themselves should not be the entire focus, but they are absolutely a part of it.

I'm not calling for a gun ban. I'm just refuting the statement you made.

This is absolutely true.

No they won't. Ease of execution is a large driver of crime. Guns are the easiest way to hurt the most amount of people. You reduce the number of guns in the equation and you will inherently see a certain number of people simply walk away from whatever harm they intended to inflict. Those that remain will move to other easy but less deadly weapons like knives, cars and trucks, blunt objects, and so on. Those items can hurt and kill, but not at the same volume and ease. This has been the trend in countries where gun bans are much more strict. There will be a shift, but not everyone who was going to use a gun is going to make that shift, so you see a little more drop off. Those that remain, the most dedicated, will have to do things like make bombs, steal passenger planes, etc. These are more complex ways of killing people, require a lot of planning, and a lot of circumstances to be just right. These are the least likely ways people kill. Reducing the amount of guns in the equation inherently reduces the ease with which people commit violent crimes, the frequency with which people commit violent crimes, and the effects of those crimes.

Also worth noting that a strong majority of gun owners favor more action from congress on gun violence. It's a minority of gun owners and a large number of non-owners who don't favor more government intervention. The will of the people is not a motivating factor.

"certain pressures"? People can justify anything. I can justify things I do in war. I can justify taking a prisoner on a "rough ride". I bet a school shooter could justify his actions too. Just because you can justify something doesn't make it normal, acceptable, or any less sick.

I don't know if society has changed much, but I think a lot of the underlying problems have bubbled to the surface. The challenge is on us to recognize these problems and to address them. But a lot of people don't want to do that. It's too scary. Better to just let kids die.

American society is filled with toxic concepts that we would do well to end.

Older cars are great. Anything after 2000 (with a few exceptions) can kindly eff right off.

Turns out I had run my numbers wrong. My taxes did indeed go down as evinced by my lower rate on this week's stub.

I'm inclined to agree. All cars are awful.

What's normal? Is normal burning villages of women and children in Vietnam? Is normal dropping an atomic bomb on an entire city? Is normal a cop shooting an unarmed teenager? Lots of supposedly normal people do awful while lots of abnormal people spend their whole lives never hurting a fly.

Good post here Liger. People love tossing out "mental illness" when these atrocities occur having never given it more than a passing thought.
-
It's been like this ever since Columbine. The best solution the "wise adults" can come up with is sticking one semi-retired cop with a hand gun in every school. The only reason we haven't figured out how to prevent these atrocities is because the people with the power to do anything are either too stupid, too cowardly, or too paid-for. We can stop kids from getting murdered in their classrooms. It's just that no one really wants to try.

What I saw of the women's game last night looked very good. Fast and physical. They could have allowed checking in that matchup and I wouldn't have been terrified someone was going to get murdered. I was very entertained, which says something for the talent level of the marquis matchup that is USA vs Canada. I hope the game keeps growing so that it becomes more entertaining for the average person when teams other than the best of US and Canada are playing. I like watching college and the pro leagues because I enjoy the game in the pure form without checking, but I know that isn't for everyone. We need the pro leagues to survive if we ever want things to be more fun to watch. Give the women more opportunity to extend their playing careers and the entertainment value will go up over time.

Yup. A friend's husband was a nurse, got addicted to oxy and started doing heroin. Wrecked his whole life, marriage, etc. Prescription painkillers are an epidemic. The docs have prescribed Josie oxy on a couple occasions in the last few years and although she took one or two for the initial bouts of pain she essentially refused to keep taking it for fear of becoming dependent. I've never been prescribed any of these big drugs and I hope I never have a reason to be.
