  1.

To be fair, they lost 10-4 and 6-1 to Ottawa early last season and beat them in 5 ... Granted, it's not October, but it's not April either ... and Ottawa is closer to missing the playoffs than they are to first place. They played a GREAT first period ... the played a crap 20 minutes, the opponent hit 2 pucks into the net out of the air and bounced another in off of Teppo, and now the season is in jeopardy? Really? I'm pissed too, but not THAT kind of pissed.

Ottawa has goaltending now. Big difference.

And have you forgotten that three of the Sabres' four wins in the playoffs against the Sens came in overtime.

Anyone who poo-poos the Senators is whistling past the old graveyard. Speaking of that, did RJ say the Sabres power play was "poo poo"? haha

  2. Ottawa has outhit us. It adds up over the course of a game. Max was afraid of his shadow coming out of his own zone late in the second and turned around.

For those who say the power play has been coming around, remember to deduct all the shorthanded goals.

Finally, is Tallinder made of sugar or something? Man. That's the real story. The thought of losing him again. And Emery's first period is going echo for a while, you would think.

    What an awful night.

  3. did the refs get the call correct, for us audio-only peeps?

They got it right. I don't think the call was as close as others here suggest. He clearly kicked. And you could tell by his face and body language during the delay that he knew it. A real turning point. St. Louis came out firing after that on the very next shift.

  4. But they're not much worse than You Know Who's. :) Just goading you, sorry.

By the way. I just had a thought. First one today. When it comes to evaluating a goalie's performance, can we ban the following:

    1. If it wasn't for (insert name of goalie), this game would have been over in the first period. Well, yeah, that's his job. And if he wasn't there, you'd be down 11-1.

    2. (Insert name of goalie) didn't see it/have a chance. Bull! If you believe that, then when a similar chance is stopped, it has to be attributed to sheer luck.

    You know who are you.

  5. Besides, the team seems to focus more defensively when Marty is in the pipes - maybe they need him to play to refocus their game.

The Sabres do give up a couple fewer shots per game when Marty is in goal. Not sure it's enough to be significant. Of course you'd have to look at scoring chances. Don't get me started on that again.

Tough call for Lindy. If he thinks Ryan needs the rest maybe he goes Marty tonight, Ryan in St. Louis, Marty vs. Washington, Ryan against the Canes and Thrashers, and Marty again on New Year's Day vs. the Isles. It just has to be tough for a head coach to put in the backup in a matchup of conference powers, on the road, against a hot team, when you're trying to head off a long losing streak.

  6. To the OBNOXIOUS Canadiens fans behind me at the game, take your "Ole,ole, ole..." chant and stick it up your ass!

Once the score hit 5-2, they started taunting people leaving early, making some lame Norwood jokes, started chanting "Miller, Miller, Miller...", etc...

    F U!

Once again, at least on TV, it appeared as if huge chunks of the lower bowl were filled with out of town fans. The theory seems to be that season ticket holders sell off their seats, but I can't imagine THAT many Sabre fans in one section would do that. It appears as if the Sabres hold back rows of seats for the purpose of selling to Montreal and Toronto fans, and I hate that! Way to take away part of your home ice advantage.

  7. Better.

Good to see the Sabres get a goal off an officiating . I can't remember a game in recent years where an offside call was botched and an icing call was botched not to mention a couple quick whistles.

I'd say the ice was bad the way the Sabres are handling the puck. Guys in open ice are making that move with their stick to get the puck to settle down. But I don't see the Habs doing it. I really think this team is soooo tight right now.

Finally it's good hear the fans booing. That's great. It's not a big leap from 10-0 to booing to "I'll take my money (back) to the Bills." Only in Buffalo. :)

  8. When you get to such a big game, I don't like the message that playing your backup gives. Marty on Saturday makes more sense.

I want to see intensity tonight! Not "we'll skate up and down with the Habs and leave pretty drop passes to go the other way." The only thing I want to see dropped is Saku Koivu. And let's forget "five minutes of fury" at the beginning, then nappy time. I want to see 60 minutes of balls to the wall!

This is another one of those games where the Sabres should have the same mindset as the opponent. It hasn't happened much. As long as the Sabres continue show up in these games, I won't let my worries get too far ahead of me.

I think the Sabres make a statement tonight. 5-2 Sabres.

  9. Can anyone explain that penalty on Miller? call or not?

Tricky call. He definitely slid the puck through a little corner of illegal ice, but whether he played it in there is another thing. Anyone slow it down on replay?

Briere 5-1 on faceoffs in the second. Also interesting to note that Sekera played over five minutes in the first, but only a minute or so in the second. Power plays affected his time, I suppose, but still... we don't seem to have any defensive depth Ruff can trust. It's disconcerting.

All in all, a much better period for the Sabres. As is their tendency, they waited a little while to find their legs.

I like Emerick, but he's getting on my nerves tonight. You can tell from his voice he's a Devils guy. And why make everything so clever -- "two seconds more than nine and three quarter minutes left"?! Anything wrong with saying 9:47?

And he said something in the first I couldn't repeat to save my life, but it was something was doubled while another thing was quintupled. I felt like I was taking the math part of the SAT again. This time I wanted the trains to collide, killing all on board, including Doc.

  10. Kind of hard to tell, but Miller might have made a spectacular lunging stick save at the end on a bad angle shot. Or might have hit the post. Sabres still seem like a tired team, I don't know. On one dump in they just didn't have any desire to get the puck. A nice rush by Max, but no one else has his legs going. Briere 0-5 on faceoffs, something to watch with Drury out.

  11. This is a big one. I've been saying for a while the Sabres haven't had much to play for. Tonight is different. They've been challenged -- by their coach, by themselves, by many fans (if they are aware of the various boards, anyway). And they have some adversity, if they are without Teppo and Chris. Montreal's only 8 points back, their closest rival in the Northeast. If they don't show up tonight, something is really wrong.

  12. Well, they played better in the 2nd. Vanek scored. Good to see Mair and Gaustad sticking up for Briere.

Yeah but what was Kotalik doing after the nudge-prison rape? Signalling a touchdown? He should have been hitting anything that moved. Soft.

    Ryan said it all!

The game doesn't need this garbage. And then Ovechkin claimed Briere "fell."
