In perhaps the oddest transaction in team history, General Manager Punch Imlach buys his son Brent from the Toronto Maple Leafs. He has enough cash left over to also purchase Floyd Smith, who would go on to captain the Sabres in their first season, then coach them in their first Cup final season in 1974-75. Brent does not play a single game for the Sabres. Random Google fact: Partway through his college career, Brent rejected a pro contract with the Leafs because he didn't think his father, the general manager, was offering enough money.

The Sabres trade Jozef Cierny and a fourth-round pick in 2004 (Jussi Tarvainen) to Edmonton for Craig Simpson.

The Sabres trade former Confederate General Stephane Beauregard to Chicago along with future considerations (a fourth-round pick in 1993 that turns into Eric Daze) for goaltender Dominik Hasek.

it's also apparent where he can turn when he needs a ballbreaker.
That was pretty good, I have to admit. :)

Hey guys, I heard Darcy is golfing this weekend and needs a ball-washer. He's got a big set of Titleists, so be sure to stay hydrated during this hot weather. Mair for Rasmussen! Brilliant!

The Sabres trade Erik Rasmussen to Los Angeles for Adam Mair and a fifth-round pick in the 2003 draft (D Thomas Morrow).

yeah, but i think he made up for Gratton by stealing Briere for Gratton straight up unless your cat reference means the same thing... ;)
Yes, that's what it means, you pod. :)
"I wonder about guys who have cats."
shrader, we also gave up a third round pick to get ole Chris. I don't think it's fair to say Holzinger and Primeau were garbage. Zinger was our second leading scorer one year.

I still can't believe Darcy got Pittsburgh to take Barnababy off his hands and give him Stu Barnes in return. And don't forget Grosek for Dumont and Gilmour. The one big blemish on Regier's record, though, is his overpaying for Chris Gratton. He covered his poop like an obsessive-compulsive cat, though, didn't he? :)

In a major rebuilding move by John Muckler, who has been ordered to slash payroll, the Sabres trade former 76-goal scorer Alexander Mogilny and a fifth round draft choice in 1995 to Vancouver for Mike Peca, Mike Wilson and a first round pick in 1995 that turns into Jay McKee. Not a bad deal!

The Sabres trade prospect defenseman Keith Ballard, the team's first round pick in 2002, to Colorado for Steve Reinprecht, then trade Reinprecht and Rhett Warrener to Calgary for Chris Drury and Steve Begin. (Ballard, now 23, broke into the NHL last season with Phoenix, playing in all 82 games and recording 39 points on eight goals and 31 assists. He was a -18.)

Just after 1 a.m., the Sabres announce they have traded Dominik Hasek to the Detroit Red Wings for Slava Kozlov, a first round pick in 2002 and future considerations. The pick, which ends up being the 20th overall, becomes Daniel Paille. Future considerations never kick in, since Hasek does not play for Detroit in 2002-03. If he had, the Sabres would have been owed a second round pick if the Wings did not win the Cup and a first if they had. The Sabres reportedly had a deal with St. Louis that would have brought Pavel Demitra or Cory Stillman and goaltender Fred Brathwaite to the Sabres, but Hasek nixed it.
Historical footnote: Readers of this board are the first fans to learn about the trade. The moderator at the time has a contact in the Buffalo media who instant messages him the details as they come in. Pretty cool!

Anyone remember the movie "Wag the Dog"? The president starts a war to deflect attention from a personal scandal. You wonder if the timing of the logo "leak" is meant to take everyone's mind off the beginning of free agency -- a period that could very tough for many fans to swallow.

June 30, 2001
With a midnight deadline nearing to either pick up Dominik Hasek's option of $9 million, trade him or let him become an unrestricted free agent, a vigil of sorts begins on the predecessor to this message board, at the time the only such forum in cyberspace. Hundreds log on and off throughout the day to learn the fate of The Dominator. What the fans don't know is that his fate is sealed. The goaltender had traveled to Coudersport, PA, after the season to meet with owner John Rigas to request a trade, and Rigas had agreed. Midnight comes. There is no news.

Yes, Clip was killed in a car accident on Grand Island back in 2004. I also seem to remember he had some weird chronic dread disease -- lupus, was it lupus?!
Seriously, the accident occurred as Clip was playing his famous tuba while driving. Serves him right for tooting his own horn.
Wherever he is, the Clipper has to be laughing at that one.

The Boogie Man bids bye-bye as the Nashville Predators bag Bob Boughner in the expansion draft held in Buffalo. You can say Music Town is gunning for BB.
(Special thanks to the late Clip Smith for writing today's TDISH!)

The Sabres trade Dean Sylvester to the Atlanta Thrashers for future considerations. The infant Thrasher franchise selects Darryl Shannon in the expansion draft.

The Sabres trade Mike Peca to the Islanders for Taylor Pyatt and Tim Connolly.

The Sabres send Jean-Luc Grand-Pierre (aka The Hyphenator), Matt Davidson (no nickname available) and fifth-round picks in 2000 and 2001 to Columbus for future considerations. Columbus selects Dwayne Roloson and Geoff Sanderson in the expansion draft.
Details and context, anyone?

Who are you? Your name sounds familiar, sonny.

Thanks shrader for the explanation on the Pandolfos. I think I just had my first Senior Moment.
-
haha. Yes, that was also his "the light comes on" speech. "It is a beautiful day. The light comes on." Dom was a piece of work. Never boring, I'll give him that.

How did we get the rights to Mike Pandolfo?
-
I remember everything but the Ray quote. I guess at that point in his career, he wasn't the guy I turned to for talk of the future.
Those details on the Kozlov deal aren't completely accurate. They kept one of the picks and traded the other, along with a pick they got in return for Mike Pandolfo to Edmonton. Come on, BU players demand your respect!
That came straight out of the 2002-03 Media Guide transactions section. In the same guide, in Hecht's profile, it says the Sabres traded the 31st and 36th picks to Edmonton.
The Sabres traded Mike Pandolfo for a pick?

Kinda makes the Caniac-bashing a little ridiculous, doesn't it? :)
Seriously, I think the problem the Sabres will have to address is the perception that tickets are hard to come by.
