  1. Has Buffalo been on the PP yet?

    You're funny.

Just the one PP so far.

I tuned in to the Pittsburgh broadcast long enough to hear the play by play guy, Paul Steigerwald, talk about how tough it is for the Sabres to spend a lot of money in such a small market, but "they always do a good job fielding a competitive team" (paraphrase). Coming from a fellow small market Rust Belt shithole that also went bankrupt, I threw up in my mouth a little.

  2. agreed on Gerbe....they will need four to win tonight but so far line 1 looks great when Andre is not playing with it ,line two good and three ok too... ...11.59 and no real scoring chances yet for Pitt..another good sign.

That point to point pass by Gerbe was pretty wild... a full-on slapshot pass.

  3. Enroth is a .890???? goalie in the the ahl with a 3.00+? gaa. You would have to be drunk to start him over La Lime, but then again these are the Sabres. Lindy and Darcy are in charge. No chance tonight if they start him.

Enroth wins more than Lalime. Small sample, yes. They owe it to the team and to the fans to see what Enroth can do. They have absolutely nothing to lose. Not when the other guy has nine wins in three seasons.

  4. I tried doing a screen cap on NHL.com's replay, but it wasn't good enough to tell. It was very close, but if I had to guess, my answer would be no. It appears that he was just barely off, but by a small fraction of a second.

What a tough call for the linesman. Honestly, how do you look at two places at once?

I'm amazed they miss so few calls. OTOH, the culture of hockey seems to be not to nitpick offside calls that are close. This extends to the broadcasts, it seems.

  5. Lalime always seems to play the third game in four nights or the 4th in 6. Why not play the better goalie (Miller) when the team is most likely to have the least amount of energy? Play Lalime in the middle games when he would have a fresher team in front of him? I know Miller was injured tonight, but this has never made sense to me. Someone should put this thought in Ruff's head.

    I like this thought.

  6. It must be pretty damn disheartening to be a member of this squad and hear from the coach that Millers buddy Lalime is playing. You know that no matter how hard you work chances are you're gonna lose. It's pretty damn disheartening as a fan as well.

Yep. It's an old boys network over there. Everyone has their patron. Larry, Tom. Darcy, Larry. Lindy, Darcy. Patrick, Ryan.

    Com-fort-able.

  7. Also, there's kind of a catchall category for video reviews:

(viii) The video review process shall be permitted to assist the referees in

determining the legitimacy of all potential goals (e.g. to ensure they

are “good hockey goals”). For example (but not limited to), pucks that

enter the net by going through the net meshing, pucks that enter the

net from underneath the net frame, pucks that enter the net

    undetected by the referee, etc.

  8. I still want the explanation on how they disallowed Conolly's goal. The call on the ice from the ref was goal and the puck clearly did not go in off of a hand. End of story. There was no whistle for the hand pass and you can't review a hand pass call anyway. Seems very fishy to me.

    Was it reviewed upstairs/Toronto?

  9. I've tried to withhold judgment on Niedermayer, but enough's enough. This is the guy who's supposed to show the "kids" the way out of the wilderness?

I watched him on the far right win on a 3 on 2 break. Grier was down the left wing and McCormick in the middle. Grier's pass went off Cody and bounced behind Niedermayer. He turned his head, looked at it and absolutely quit on the play, cruising into the corner to make a nice gentle turn back out of the zone.

Then a little later he had the puck just outside the Tampa line with two of his teammates about to leave the Tampa zone. He lazily slipped it back toward Morrisson, who seemed to be shocked. He played it like it was a radioactive turd. Suddenly it's deep in the Buffalo zone. Didn't get that play. Why not just dump it in on the delayed offside?

  10. ????? Maybe I missed something but Connolly was back and was the only one in position to make a play, but it was virtually a three on one and the Tampa player deflected it in. The turnover his fault, but this "Connolly doesn't back check" has got to stop. There's a reason he was the forward out there in last night's 5-on-3 PK

Yeah, that kind of analysis bugs me too sometimes. It's like we fans expect players to defy physics and travel 20 feet in .5 seconds. It was just a nice goal.

  11. Downie avoided one by keeping his gloves on - my money says Gaustad flattens him tonight.

I've never given that much thought to this call. But I checked the rule book -- there doesn't seem to be anything in there about getting an unsportsmanlike for dropping your gloves when the opponent doesn't. Instigator, yes.

And I think Downie's behavior there comes very close to embellishment. He sure looked like he was going to start fighting.

    Shades of gray.

  12. If you read my initial question, I asked if it was actually the television production? I didn't even accuse the crowd of being quiet, it just sounds like it on my ######, non-HD Center Ice feed....that I get out here in New Jersey....as I can't get home to games often...oh, and I just back in to being on this message board this year and didn't have the time to go back through the previous two years' of crowd noise posts...

    Eleven, go get a sandwich.

    You gone?

mrjsbu, this has been a hot topic for the better part of two seasons. Lots of media people, including Rick himself, have talked about how quiet the building is. That's coming from generally pro-Sabres people in the building, not watching on TV. Quite a few posters who go to games also have agreed. One of the theories, besides the lackluster play of the team, is that the crowd has become too sanitized, tame and family-oriented.

The eyes also don't deceive. When the Sabres score, you can just see that a lot of people aren't making noise, unless they're trying to do it telepathically.

That said, there's been more life in the crowd the past three or four games, IMHO. Seems like a turning point was the nice ovation for Mike Grier.

  13. I don't have any details yet--I haven't been there yet!

But I bought a guided tour of the review room (together with game tix and hall of fame passes) at a charity auction. It was supposed to be the day of the Leafs game a couple of weeks ago, but the guy who is providing the tour was (seriously) ill. So now it's March.

You won't see the room in action though?
