  1. You guys really want another season like last year? Plus knowing the rule changes with the draft means there is less chance of getting 1st pick? I'm not watching hoping they lose.

I've never watched a game hoping the Sabres would lose. Never. I've watched quite a few in recent times where I didn't care if they won. That's the sweet spot, IMHO.

I wonder if this is the first opener since 1971 that hasn't seen Rick Jeanneret in the booth doing play by play. I'm hedging my bets only because in the early days Ted Darling would do radio if the game wasn't televised, and maybe some opener on the road wasn't televised.

  2. Will I be the first man to admit he has never driven stick? I have a recurring nightmare where I'm being chased by some in-bred chainsaw murderer and I jump into a car in the woods (by the old abandoned house) and it doesn't have automatic transmission.

  3. Now that's some seriously smart thinking.

Thanks! Unless my sarcasm meter is broken.

Maybe I'm on a roll... let's pick up on your nautical theme and change the horn to something nautical in nature, instead of what sounds like a train horn. Make it historically accurate. What sound did boats on the Erie Canal make to announce their presence?

  4. Change the arena atmosphere? I'll throw out a couple more ideas no one will like: turn off the video on the scoreboard when play is going on and severely limit anything that puts eyes there during the game. Make people look where they're supposed to be looking. Kill the horn, at least in its current ear-blasting, spleen-shaking incarnation.

  5. I go to 10-20 games a year and the in-game presentation SUCKS. It's cookie cutter crap that you see at most arenas. BLARING music during every interruption in play, kiss cam, BLARING music, funniest videos, BLARING music, tshirt tosses, BLARING music, etc... Do you remember the Nicholas Picholas fiasco? They trotted this poor fool out as the in-game presentation "host" game after game, and he would relentlessly get booed LOUDER each game.

I have no faith that the people in charge of in-game presentation can choose the right song on their own. They will have 100's of meetings on the topic, and then still end up with a bad choice.

100's of meetings and a bad choice. What do they have, some kind of flat management structure?

What the Sabres need is a producer. And not just on the power play.

  6. Just spoke to a class of fifth graders via skype in Cincinnati about gaming with a couple of coworkers. It was awesome to see how excited they were to talk to us. It was also awesome how much they knew- man, it is so easy to underestimate the tech knowledge of 10 year olds these days. Kinda scary, honestly.

Oh. And hockey. Real hockey. Is back tomorrow.

Yeah, yeah, you're a Wings fan. Give it a rest. :P

  7. I guess I really never thought of the Anthem as entertainment, but something that should be done well. I think Allen does it well.

Lots of people do it well. It's a freakin' hockey game. Think about what anthem singers have meant for setting the home-ice advantage tone historically in places like Montreal, Boston and of course Philadelphia and Chicago. Would someone like Allen have really worked in those situations?

I guess I want some fat broad to waddle out, belt it out and make Chet and Terry's glasses of Chateau de Poof Poof explode.

  8. In all seriousness, Eleven, it's a great idea. I just wish the Sabres employed people who were clever and bright enough to enact ideas like this. Hell, I wish the Sabres' owners and their team of accountant advisers were bright enough to know that the arena experience has to be totally rejiggered. They've had three years and what have they done? One of my ideas was to have an anthem singer who sets a different tone than Doug Allen, and I was ripped to shreds. Doug Allen has always been the anthem singer at the Overlook Hotel and always will be! Why can't the atmosphere be better in the arena? As usual, follow the money.

  9. In the "greater than the sum of its parts" category, the Isles' moves (including addressing their issues in goal) would seem likely to light a fire under this lineup. Believing that your GM knows what he's doing and that ownership is trying to win can go a long way.

  10. Crazy busy with work recently so to just relax with some brainless stuff I finally broke down and got Transformers 4 since it's in Redbox now...what a waste of $1.50 and 3 hours. Holy cow. That's easily among the 5 worst movies I've ever seen. I was expecting it to be positively awful and it exceeded my lofty expectations.

Second complaint is I turn on TBS to watch Seinfeld reruns to compensate for that terrible movie and...baseball. I really just don't like that sport, and it's getting worse with age.

    Nice game, pretty boy!
