While not definitive, I think this is just pattern recognition done in post processing. You have a well defined structure you’re looking for. Boards of a certain height, red line on top, yellow line across the bottom. These are patterns that can be extracted and then the ad over laid on top of it. This would be done frame by frame. The real trick is making sure the ads don’t go over bodies.

McDavid played over 50% of the 3rd period and every shift looked like the start of the game.

I don’t know if you saw the replay, but the video was 100 times worse than that still frame. The only reason his stick was off the ice was because it would slow down his glide.
