It was never going to be the case that the Sabres were going to trade Peterka and get the better player in the deal. Teams interested in Peterka were going to be teams trying to get better who were offering pieces that, to them, were expendable and redundant. I'm not saying Kesserling and Doan are bad players, but they aren't what we need to take the step towards being a playoff team this year. Kesserling, who I assume is seen as the long sought after partner for Owen Power, is 25 years old and has played 156 NHL regular season games and no playoff games. Bernard-Docker is the only d-man on our current NHL roster, who has played fewer NHL games. I expect a similar trade with Byram in the next 48 hours. And when that is done, the Sabres will, in the blink of an eye, have gone from being a team that looked like it might be up against the cap after signing their RFAs, to being a team that can easily come in around $88 million, give or take a million.

Here's a sad and crazy thought. What if saving money was actually number two or three on the priority list. When people talk about Adams pinching pennies for Pegula, if almost legitimizes Adams. As if he would be better at his job if not for Terry. The toughest part to swallow is that I think that Adams is really trying and believes in everything he does.

Kesselring feels like the type of player that people have been clamoring for. He fills a need for the Sabres. It's likely his worth to the Sabres specifically is greater than JJ's to the Sabres. However, I still feel like this return is underwhelming unless Doan ends up sticking and not just being a fourth line plug

We would have paid that. He truly did not want to be here. The return sucks bc we weren’t sending him to where he wanted to go. That’s my guess. There were better options but we chose to send him to Utah. I’m not so sure why I’m both mad and intrigued. Most have something to do with having JJ and still being God awful. He doesn’t play anything like playoff hockey will demand. What do I know. I’m a big “you can’t quantify chemistry with analytics” guy. Bye bye JJ. Thank you for your contributions and making everyone around you better.
