The curious case of Rasmus Ristolainen: ?

Bogo's main issue right now isn't even what he does when he is in the lineup, it's just that he's too often not in the lineup at all. I don't have any excitement to see what he brings to the team when in, because it's not sustainable. Get rid of him as soon as possible.

Ristolainen needs to be better, plain and simple. If this is what we'll be getting from him consistently, we'll need a better top pair Dman. He'd be fine on the second pair. I fear that's his proper projected placement at this point.

I don't have a good thread in which to place this, but after Risto played 29 minutes in regulation in the front end of a back-to-back, and then Fedun sat the next night in favor of Redmond...

I remembered last year that we just looked better with Fedun in the lineup. Was he spectacular? No. Did he get sent out against the best forwards? Absolutely not. Will he occasionally make a gaff like any defenseman? Yup. But last year, we exited our zone better and just looked faster with him playing. Sometimes it’s not the talent, just making the right simple plays that don’t lead to goals against.

Last year, the Sabres were 33-37-12, but 14-10-3 with Fedun in the lineup.

This year… 2-0 with him in the lineup. 1-6-2 with the other rotating defensemen because of injuries.

Is Fedun the savior? No. But we are better with Fedun as the #6 than we have been with others in that same spot. And that third pair could hopefully play 2 more minutes a game without our entire team falling apart -- right?

(Oh, and Fedun is a +1. For the win.)

I noticed similar things about Fedun last year. His biggest (only?) asset, something he's average at, is the thing the Sabres need the most, and that's why he always seems to be okay - not great - but okay when he plays.
