No, they weren't. He made a choice to do that. Remember "Suffering"? Of course, the Sabres got cold feet and decided to fire everyone and hire old fan favorites (Ted Nolan and Pat LaFontaine) to fix things right away but it's not like sucking wasn't the plan. So far Murray's two best moves are drafting Reinhart and Eichel -- the two critical parts of Regier's plan.

How is he not mediocre? Just not being Regier isn't enough to make you a great GM. He gets fixated on players and then gives up a bunch to get them. We gave up two 2nd round picks for Gorges last summer -- why was that again? Now we suddenly gave up a huge asset to get Lehner (so much so that Ottawa is now in on O'Reilly). We gave up a lot in the Fasching and Kane/Bogosian trades as well. Meanwhile, has he fleeced anyone or made a trade to maximize our value yet? After this weekend, we're pretty much out of all the extra assets we started building up under Regier. What happens when he can't overpay for everything he wants? Everyone loves the interviews but he's nothing special so far.

You're right. Only a good GM could take the 30th place team and make sure they finish 30th again.

Darcy did build the best Sabres team of all-time though. And we know his plan was to draft 1-2 overall in 2014 and 2015 (i.e. "Suffering") so it's likely we'd have Reinhart and Eichel even if he'd never been fired. We don't know what moves he would eventually try to make to build around them but presumably it would not have been just to keep all of his prospects.

Good thing there are more quality goalies in the world than ever before.

Armia and Lemieux had plenty of value though, and each was having a good season when they were traded so their trade values were high when he pulled the trigger. So even if neither guy develops, he could have used them in separate trades. It's not like we didn't lose anything when we sent them away to Winnipeg. Now I'm wondering if he's just fibbing to justify the moves he's made or if he's actually this delusional with his thought process.

Confirmation that we a mediocre GM.

Enroth's numbers last year are about on par with Lehner's (way better in terms of GAA when he went to Dallas) and Neuvirth's numbers last year in Buffalo were way better. It's not like this is an upgrade. There's also no explanation for why we suddenly had a goaltending crisis. We were in 30th place last year. The team has plenty of holes to fill and they're all more important than goalie. If we were a contending team and goaltender was the last piece of the puzzle, I'd understand overpaying for a really good one. But we're a 30th place team and we just overpaid for the same level of goaltending we already had.

It's almost like the #21 overall pick was really valuable or something.

I'm glad in Tim Murray's mind he was able to acquire Evander Kane for just 1 first-round draft pick. High on mushrooms, indeed.
-
He could always trade down....
-
It's headed to the Rangers. "You don't win without two good goalies."
-
When the "best player" is a .905 save % goalie with concussion problems, you lost the trade. Especially when you're giving up a first in (supposedly) the best draft since 2003. Also, with regard to Regier, if he hadn't stockpiled all those assets, Murray wouldn't have anything to burn through for his overpriced crap.
-
Note that all the picks we have are courtesy of Regier. Murray hasn't added any, he just gives away the stuff he predecessor built up for him. Horrible trade.

Zero F*cks Given. Zero Brain Cells Used.
-
Everyone has been convinced from Day 1 that he's going to be this awesome GM just because he's a loudmouth and ZFG. Not a ton of evidence that he's actually a great GM.
-
That's the other part of this! Why are we even making a trade this morning??? What's the rush? Literally NOTHING about this move makes any sense.
-
This.
-
This is the type of fleecing Darcy Regier used to do to other teams. We fired him to hire a braindead GM who could easily be fleeced, apparently.
-
Holding out for a miracle that this thing isn't true.
-
Looking forward to Murray trading 31 and 51 for three magic beans.
-
It's way worse than an overpayment if the initial reports are true. It's one thing to overpay for something good (Kane and Bogosian). It's another to overpay for something fairly crappy.
-
Are we really trading a 1st round pick for a goalie whose save % was .905 last season? Our goalies last year were better than that!
-
Welcome aboard. Good thing Regier loaded us up with so many assets for Murray to burn.

Ugh....
