  1. I think the business of "how did the team react" is over-played. Cooke damn near killed Savard years ago, and the Bruins' on-ice reaction was pretty tame.
  2. ^ It's a shame. I'm still becoming accustomed to the very hurly-burly (sp?) ways in which international footballers move, rise, and then fall among clubs of different tiers, quality, and resources. It's a persisting irony to me: The USA fancies itself a bastion of free markets, but our professional sports associations are very much influenced by principles that are, well, the opposite of how free markets work. Lots of monopolies and other permitted anti-competitive conduct, for starters. OTOH, Europe is often referred to as a network of declining socialist states. Yet, their pro sports associations are governed by very cut-throat free market principles. Are you a good player who's become a great player? Okay, then, you leave your role as a Chelsea reserve (or whatever) and go to Liverpool. Are you a great player who's become an elite player? Okay, then, you leave Liverpool and go to Barcelona. Oh, and are you a club that's bleeding cash and unable to maintain payroll? Okay, well, then - you fold. Or you topple down from the top flight into the second division. It's amazing, really. North American sports can't hold a candle to the intrigue that comes out of international soccer.
  3. Mahrez is apparently on strike at Leicester.
  4. Haha - fair deuce Cool map on this page. I can't say I think of Erie, PA as being part of Appalachia, though.
  5. Good call on the Southern Tier being the Southern Tier. I would submit that there are regions that have dual identities. Chautauqua County, for example, is definitely part of WNY, imo.
  6. I'd been curious about the post as well, as my response indicated. I'm not sure what "shackled" added to "stapled" relative to the issue you wanted to highlight, but I certainly take you at your word. I also agree with what NS offers above -- some words in some contexts are loaded with connotation.
  7. Just looked at a map, and, yeah - Rte 14 is a helpful line.
  8. Fair. Wikipedia says it’s really 17 counties. And there’s a treaty-based “preemption line” that runs north/south through or near Geneva and marks off WNY.
  9. Sorry on the 490. I meant that exit on 90 where you access 490. Is that where WNY is demarcated? But I take the point of Rochesterites thinking they’re in/of WNY. Otoh, the common phrase is “the 8 counties of WNY.” Monroe ain’t among them.
  10. I'll add: The practice of invoking and applying ethnic and/or racial stereotypes upon meeting a new individual person is where stereotypes go bad. Very bad.
  11. Maybe just semantics here. I think of ceiling as something reasonably attainable, and I don't think there's a realistic chance that Wilson becomes as useful as either of those guys. But I'm all for being wrong on that score.
  12. I think that one way to gain a visceral understanding of the difference(s) would be to say that very thing that to your average Kazakh. Or just watch some Borat.
  13. Oh, Lord, yes. Sign me up for either of those. However, I don't think Wilson would project that high.
  14. I think this is about right. I liked a lot of the play that I saw from the Sabres last night. On an in-arena basis, it was a pleasant game to watch. Lots of pace, lots of movement. I'm not sure that's apt, though. I think that Botterill very much wants Wilson to be part of a process of changing the team's culture, mindset, etc.
  15. Abso-frickin-lutely.
  16. Speaking of which: Did you ever respond to the posts asking for clarification on your post re Kane being "shackled" to the 3rd line?
  17. I don't think they draft a QB at #10, having poured $71M and several years into a veteran QB.
  18. Hmm. Is it west of the 390, or 490?
  19. Good call. That'd take, what, 21 and 22 and a 2nd? Jumpin' Jehosephat. I mean. $71M guaranteed to a quarterback that's often average, sometimes good, and rarely great. With the WR talent they have, I can see that. However, that O-Line is *not* what it once was. They could make it work -- I very much doubt they will try.
  20. Was at the game. My main takeaway is that NJ frickin’ SKATES. Holy Moses. Sabres were good in the first, and ... okay for the balance of the game. They got beat by a better team.
  21. In fairness to those in or of the 5 boroughs -- the northern part of Bronx is fairly upstate to them. The "South/North" thing seems to have become something of a state of mind. Maybe more a rural/urban thing? When I take county roads to points remote in the 8 counties of WNY, I see puh-lenty of confederate flags.
  22. You know - I forgot about that injury. Jeez. Maybe a return to form for Larsson would be yet another shot in the shoulder for this club.
  23. I really like the idea that Baptiste is being groomed to be a speedy, effective, responsible bottom-6 player. That's the sort of roster construction this team has needed for a while. I mean, a guy like Larsson was targeted to fulfill such a role. I don't think he has the wheels to do it.
