  1. Next game against CAR is absolutley gimongous.

EDM picking up the win by giving up the losing goal with 30s remaining in the third.

CAR gives up 3 goals in the third to win another 1 goal game... Unreal that team in one goal games they're almost unbeatable.

The Hockey Gods have not smiled on either of those teams yet this season. Hopefully they have better puck luck down the stretch when it really matters.

  2. The Oilers weren't "tanking." With the talent they have they expect to be a playoff team. They need NHL bodies.

I wouldn't say they expect to be a playoff team, but they certainly don't expect to be in the basement. Their recent moves will certainly help... gone are some of the 1-way offenvise players (Perron, Arcobello, Draisaitl), replaced with some decent 2-way NHL veterans (Roy, Klinkhammer, Fraser). This will help cut back on their goals against, which was their biggest problem. It seems to be helping already. This gives them better matchups against opposing teams top lines and allows the Hall line to wheel and deal.

  3. Tyler Myers expects to return to action for the Buffalo Sabres against the New Jersey Devils.

Buffalo won 10 of 13 games before he got hurt and then went 1-7-1 when he was sidelined.

    coincedence ? i think not.

He was playing well, but the reason they've been losing is the goaltending has cooled off. During their winning streak, they we're still getting badly outshot, however Enroth was playing like a generational talent. So unless Myers is Enroths gateway to Dominik Haseks soul, then I expect their losing ways to continue.

  4. They've been on a bit of a CHL slump lately. Hopefully Hall backs his prediction w/ his play. The Candy Canes having a pair of healthy Staals puts the Sabres in the driver's seat down the back stretch if they can take care of business the next couple of road stops.

Near term the Sabres may lose some ground to the Oil who play 4 of their next 5 against DET, CHI, STL, and TBL. However, the Feb/Mar schedule is highly favorable for BUF to move up the standings with only 4 home games in the month of March. Likewise, EDM has a 6 game homestand in March (7 total at home) against the likes of CBJ, PHI, COL, and DAL. I fully expect BUF to have their hands of stone firmly wrapped around The Shart trophy by April 1st.

  5. I don't see Centre as the biggest position of need Girgenson, Grigs, Reinhart and Compher - plus potentially a top pick in this draft who probably will be another centre.

This team needs elite wingers to play with Reinhart at this point, IMO. Im not sure we have truely a top line winger anywhere in the organization.

It will be interesting to see what they do if they pull off one of McDavid or Eichel - do they play wing with Rienhart or do they become the #1 centre and Reinhart moves to 2?

Moves will need to be made. They have 9 picks this year and already have the league max number of contracts (50) in their system. 10 of those are due to be UFAs, 13 RFAs. Sure they'll let some walk, but at some point they'll need to turn picks/prospects into NHL caliber players. If they land McDavid or Eichel, I see them moving one of Grigorenko or Reinhart as part of a larger deal for an established top 6 scoring winger. If they pick Hanifin, then a d-man will be moved instead.

The important thing is they have a ton of assests (prospects and picks), ~30mil in cap space for 15-16, and an open check book. It's a GMs dream job.

  6. I just find it fascinating that all of the comments on relying on the stats to drive results has finally shown true, as the Sabres are performing recently in line with what the statistical indicators show.

Analytics aside.... if you want to know who will finish last in the NHL, just look at team Goal Differential for past seasons. The team with the worst goal differential has finished last 15 out of the last 16 seasons. The only exception being 07-08 when ATL finished a league worst -56, yet had 5 more points than both TB (-44) and and LA (-35). Buffalo currently is worst at -59, a whopping 12 goals worse than Edmonton.

If the Sabres keep up this pace (-1.475/gm), they'll finish -121. You would have to go all they way back to the 99-00 season to find a team with a worse goal diff (the expansion Atlanta Thrasher, -143). And if you want to exclude expansion years, you'd have to back to the 93-94 which saw Ottawa log a -196 in just their second season in the NHL.

What really blows my mind is that ANA is only a +5 in goal diff, yet they sit atop the NHL with 58 points. How is that even possible?

  7. Buffalo has lost 3 straight and has gone 1-6-1 in their last 8. The combination of Myer's injury and our goalies coming back to normality has been huge for us. The CHL is far from lost; most analysts agree we are still the worst team in the league, and we're starting to play like it again.

What's the opposite of a Herb Brook's pregame speech?

    A Mel Brooks pregame speech?

  8. Definite tank move for them and a good move for the Pens for this season.

Perron epitomized everything wrong with the Oilers. Lazy one-way player, a -17 this season was 3rd worst on the team, and only scored 5 goals. Replacing him with Derek Roy will be an improvement as Roy is a much more responsible 2-way player. Roy doesn't have the offensive flair that Perron had, but that's not what the Oilers need. Good maneuver by the Oil, don't see it as a tank move,

  9. Of course Kaleta would speak against the tank, all players would. The anti-tank members of the media continue to ask players their opinions on building teams and the tank (including Crosby, Doughty, etc...) - what do you think players are going to say? They seem to think these are points in favor of their position when in fact they are not. Most of the crowd that has been pro-tank this year has never suggested players would buy-in to the idea. Even if a few did, they wouldn't say so overtly. For example, I suspect that Moulson supports the idea a little bit, but he would never say so. Why else would he sign here long-term? The money is good yes, but I think he sees the future as bright for the Sabres.

Let's say last place comes down to the final game and Moulson is due up in the shootout. A miss and Buffalo finishes last. What does he do? Dump it in the corner? Fire it over the glass, then rip of his jersey to reveal a McEichel t-shirt?

That's ridiculous. There's no tank in any of these players' game. They play for each other and the head coach.... that's it.

  10. Sabres are still in great position to make a run at the Shart. 10 points is only 5 games, and there's over half a season left. The Oilers can't get any worse and the Cane's glorious record in 1 goal games will ultimately even out dropping them out of Shart contention.

Likewise Buffalo's putrid record in 1 goal games will also even out as they rocket up the standings. Almost have their wins have come in the shootout. 8 ROWs is second worst in the league... EDM with 7, CAR with 9.

  11. If the Sabres pick at #3, would you want Hanifin, or trade the pick to one of 4-6 plus, obviously, a huge return?

Hell yes, draft Hanifin at #3. Probably the best D prospect in over a decade. He'll be better than Doughty... you don't pass that up.

Or maybe the team at #2, Arizona or Carolina (or Edmonton), want Hanifin (they need D), so you could offer a package of Myers/Risto/Zadorov + Reinhart + Ennis and all 3 1st round picks to move up one spot to #2. If I'm EDM or CAR sitting at #2, that's a seriously nice package for what their needs are... and they get Hanifin as well.

Buffalo has the talent pool and picks to put together whatever package they need to move up from 3 to 2.

  12. I still can't believe Baptiste got cut. But then again Canada also cut Dal Cole who has scored 21 goals in 23 games and is on a 2.0 point per game pace. Either there are a ton of politics going on or this Team Canada is going to be very very dangerous to have enough talent to cut those two.

Canada's selection process is always in question. They seem to try to fill roles on the team so they end up cutting some kids with high level offensive skill for more defensive players. That's helps if you're playing a long grinding month long tournament, but they only play a handful of games over a couple of weeks. A hot goalie and some goal scorers can take you far in a short tournament.

I thought Bailey deserved a shot on team USA, but he's only recently been hot, so probably wasn't on the radar long enough like some of the other prospects.

  13. Detroit is 13-0-1 (nhl stats) in their last 14 in Detroit vs Sabres. Regardless of the goalie, the Sabres (even in good years) rarely matchup well w/ the Wings. So it has the makings for a good night in the CHL. (Of course, Sunday started out well for the Bills, and we know how that worked out.)

It helps that Buffalo is essentially dressing an AHL lineup... missing Myers, Moulson, Gionta, Foligno, Mitchell and Weber (also Strachan and McCormick but I consider them AHL caliber).

Should be interesting to watch the young guns tho.

  14. Current standings through games played 12/22.

    Team ----- GP - L - W - OT - PTS

    Edmonton 34 20 7 7 47

    Carolina 33 20 9 4 44

    New Jersey 35 17 12 6 40

    Arizona 33 18 11 4 40

    Buffalo 34 18 13 3 39

    Columbus 33 16 14 3 35

    Colorado 33 13 12 8 34

    Philadelphia 33 14 13 6 34

    Ottawa 34 14 14 6 34

    Dallas 32 13 14 5 31

Well, the bad news last night is everyone in action ran the table. The good news is there were only 3 teams in action and only 1 of those (the Desert Dogs) are among the Carrion elite at present.

Extremely full slate tonight as everyone but the Otters are in action including 2 potential 1 point matchups. There's a 4.5 bagger set to be played in the swamps of Joisey as the Candy Canes traipse into town. There's an even bigger 5 bagger brewing on the Albertan plains as the Desert Dogs try to calculate a plan to stop the juggernauts (aka the Euler, aka the team that Gretzky forgot). The Sabres are in Detroit hoping to gain on those 4.

If ever there was a night you need picture in picture in picture; tonight's that night.

So we're shooting for a Sabres win in regulation, a Canes OT loss, and an Oilers OT loss.... Sabres would pickup 2 points, while ARI/NJ pickup a single point, and EDM/CAR stay put.

  15. History has proven that the NHL standings ultimately shake out based on team goal differential.. namely the team with the worst diff always finishes last. Buffalo is still in last place...

..for that reason I'm not worried. ARI and CAR are better teams than their record shows... they'll move up, while I fully expect BUF to drop.
