  1. I would only trade for him over the summer with an extension being part of the deal.

    I don't think anyone is going to give him $8MM. And while $7MM per year might be a bit of an overpayment, this isn't a Leino situation where they would be throwing ridiculous money at a guy who had 1 good (injury-shortened) NHL season.

    And I'm not certainly worrying about contracts for all of the youngsters 3 years from now. If the Sabres don't get some real forwards next year, they are going to stink again and it will become more likely than not that they move into the Edmonton-like-permanently-terrible category.

    The thing is... this team can improve considerably next season and still finish 30th. That is reality. They'll be loaded with top end prospects, but they will need a couple of seasons to mature. Gone will be vets like Stafford, Stewart, Enroth/Neuvirth, perhaps Myers, Gionta, etc.. It's also a distinct possibility that they'll be even worse next year.

    That said, the top end of the 2016 draft (top 3 selection assigned by lottery) are absolute studs... Matthews, Chychrun, and Day. I don't believe Buffalo starts climbing the standing until 2016-17 at the earliest.

  2. I don't think any reasonable person can question a skating coach - even at the highest levels of the game. Playing hockey is the player's sole job and the team should do everything they can to work with them to help improve every aspect of their game. I still remember lessons I received when I first started playing hockey - and I'm sure the guys on my two teams now would welcome me getting a refresher course!

    My kids train a couple days a week with Anaheim Ducks skating coach Larry Barron. He uses a skating treadmill to fine tune their stride, arm position, hand rotation, knee bend, head and back position, etc... very very technical, Larry can talk for hours about proper skating technique it's actually very interesting. Then they spend about 30min on the ice applying everything. It's not a physically grueling skate, but it demands a high level of focus on the technical aspects of every part of the skating motion focusing on efficiency and maintaining speed.

    He also spends a lot of time with the Ducks draft picks every summer and part of the season with their AHL team putting them through the same type of drills.

  3. One scout told me last night that the gap between McDavid and Eichel has widened considerably. On Eichel: "He's a good 2nd pick"

    Disagree.

    Eichel is playing against men in the NCAA where the vast majority of players are 20-23 year olds and is leading the country in scoring as an 18yo. McDavid is playing against teenagers.

    I know, I know.... World Juniors. However, you put Eichel on the Canadian team, and he's leading the tournament in scoring.

    Watching the WJC I was more impressed with Eichel's skills than McDavid's. When Eichel is on the ice he controls the game entirely. He has better puck possession skills, partly due to his incredible reach and extra long stick. He reminds me more of a Jagr type vs McDavid who is more like a Matt Duchene.

  4. My gut feel is that they end up somewhere between 105-113 points. In a normal year, that would win it going away. This isn't a normal year, but if the other contenders wait until the trade deadline to sell off, it should be enough.

    The deadline is March 2nd. Buffalo has only 4 home games in March... 9 on the road. EDM has a 6 game homestand against TOR, CBJ, PHI, WIN, COL, DAL. ARI has a whopping 10 home games in March, they also play BUF twice near the end of the month.

    If BUF enters the deadline in the #1 spot, they'll walk away with this thing.

  5. It's looking good for us at the moment. We need to come out of the all-star break and continue our winning streak. Something else to think about: Our ROW is terrible (or great!). We're currently at 8, EDM is at 9, and Arizona and Carolina are both at 13. Some solid ground to make up for them if they want to catch us.

    Sabres:

    Lowest Goals for per game

    Highest Goals against per game

    Lowest shots for per game

    Highest shots against per game

    Good luck rest of the NHL. If it wasn't for that little winning streak in Nov, Buffalo would be somewhere around 24-25 points.

  6. Leafs are about to blow it up.IMO. If they can get some ahem,cough, stars to waive their no trades they'll be moved for picks and prospects. Can the Toronto faithful stand a rebuild ? Stay tuned. We may have some competition for the shart.

    Even if they blow it up, there is no chance they can catch Buffalo. Can they slid into a top 5 pick? Maybe.

  7. Yes! Back on top of the CHL where we belong. Analytics and goal diff are proving their worth.

    Can't wait for them to get so far ahead we can actually cheer for them to lose again.

    They can't possibly lose in DET tomorrow? Next 5 on the road heading out West. This might just be the beginning of an historical winning streak.

    @DET

    @CGY

    @EDM

    @VAN

    @MTL

  8.

    This is depressing.

    In a good way?

    A regulation win tonight heading to DET tomorrow would be a nice way to enter the All-star break on an absolute tear.

    I don't understand how PHI is so bad with Giroux and Simmonds and Cotourier. Any of those players would instantly be the #1 guy in BUF.

    A BUF win and EDM loss at FLA would put BUF in 1st.

  9. Did GMTM screw up by not dealing Enroth when he was hot?

    I don't see them getting much more than maybe a 3rd round pick at this point... maybe could've fetched a 2nd in early Dec.

    The league seems to have him figured out. How many goals went in high last night? At least 5 of the 7? He covers the bottom of the net well, but he's too short.

  10. It's amazing to me that we've won 9 straight games and are still 2 points behind the Oilers, who actually looked decent last night!

    The Oilers are playing better, they'll get some wins eventually, but might not be for a while as they're currently on a tough stretch. March is when the magic will happen. Buffalo has only 4 home games and Edmonton has a 6 game homestand against some CHL contenders. Post trade deadline (March 2nd), BUF will be gutted of veterans, playing on the road virtually the entire month. And I just don't see the Oilers unloading any of their young talent, so they're not going to get any worse this season.

  11. some motivational quotes on our quest for The Shart...

    "Our greatest strength lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is never to try just one more time." - Thomas Edison

    "The will to lose, the desire to fail, the indifference to reach your full potential... these are the keys that will unlock the door to personal success." - Confucius

    "You have to learn the rules of the game. And then you have to play worse than anyone else." - Albert Einstein

    "If you can dream it, you can't do it." - Walt Disney

    "In order to fail, we must first believe that we can't." - Nikos Kazantzakis

    "By failing to prepare, you are preparing to succeed." - Benjamin Franklin

    "You don't have to be terrible to start, but you have to start to be terrible." - Zig Zagler

    and finally....

    "If you can fly, then run

    If you can run, then walk

    If you can walk, then crawl

    but whatever you do

    you have to stop moving forward."

    MLK

  12. I had no problem with the ceremony. Of course it looked like ###### on the heels of the Selanne extravaganza.... which, imo, was way way over the top. A 90-minute ceremony? Ridiculous. He was a hockey player, not the second coming of JC himself. That said, it was the Ducks first jersey number to go up in the rafters, so it was a special moment.

  13. Went to the Ducks/Leafs game last night. The ice girls are now cleaning the ice from one end to the other instead of width wise in each zone so I no longer get to see my favorite ice girl go back and forth repeatedly right in front of me.

    Tragic.

  14. Yes and GMTM needs to get his act together. He wants to quote analytics as if the Shart can be awarded solely based on the Corsi. He needs to realize he's playing with the big boys and this is no ordinary season. He needs to realize he's up against people like Darcy and others of the same ilk. These are professional losers and GMTM better respond.

    We're still 6 weeks away from the trade deadline. IMO Dubnyk could've fetched more than a 3rd at the deadline.... maybe a 2nd. I, for one, don't want TM to just give guys away for the sake of sucking in Jan or Feb, when the last 6 weeks of the season are what really matter in the race for The Shart.

    Sabres (non-CHL) NHL record after 44 games

    2014 - 13-26-5 31 points (-48 goal differential)

    2015 - 14-27-3 31 points (-72 goal differential)

    We tankin as hard as last year.

    The team finishing with the worst goal differential has finished dead last in the NHL 15 of the past 16 seasons.

  15. We need to get to last place faster. Can Buffalo forfeit a few games?

    it's amazing that Edmonton still has fewer points. Look at the stats

    -1.66 goal differential per game vs -1.09 for Edmonton - we are giving up an extra 1/2 goal per game on average compared to Edmonton

    -12 shot differential vs -2.3 for Edmonton. We're averaging almost a -10 shots per goal more than Edmonton

    SVG % - the only stat that favors Edmonton - but just slightly. They're last in the league at 0.889 SVG%, whereas we're 22nd with .904.

    But that's only slightly better average goal tending than Edmonton. We blow them out of the water in goal differential and shot differential. We ought to be 6-8 points below them!!!

    Edmonton's GM - that one is a sorcerer, I tell you!

    They have an easier schedule in the West with multiple games against the likes of NAS, LA, ANA, CHI, VAN, SJ, STL, etc... Those games are guaranteed points in the CHL.

  16. Double ugh. Looks like Arizona wants to come play too. From Puck Daddy about the goaltending trade:

    Has Arizona played the ace that we always had in our sleeve by paring down their goaltending to league-worst? Or does this start up a goalie carousel that sends a Buffalo goalie to the desert, ensuring we kick every other CHL team in the jibblies on our way down the abyss?

    oh gawd... this is terrible news. ARI making a statement with that trade.
