    3 stars for me:

    1) Savoie, he was flying and he had some great shifts out there.

    2) Novikov, he looks like someone who played in a very good men's league for the last 2 years. His offensive side is brutally underrated.

    3) Isak Rosen, he just seemed to be around the puck a lot tonight and you could see the playmaking especially.

    Shots were 28/21 Buffalo

Other thoughts... where the hell was David Reinbacher for Montreal? He started out noticeable and then vanished halfway through the first. Owen Beck was noticeable a few times throughout but nothing popped. They just really lack that high end offensive pipeline. Sure they had some big guys and you could see some of that physicality but as Duffer and Baker noted, Buffalo never backed down from that and actually seemed to engage with it more and more.

Benson had moments and was visible but I think he looked slower as the game wore on. Still gave his all every shift. Ryan Johnson was as good as Novikov in a lot of ways but he has a bit less flash. Johnson is really that solid 5/6 who can play up because he is never going to do anything dumb. I wanted more from Kulich, when the puck wasn't being slipped to him by Rosen, he was I guess around but idk I just wanted more. Kisakov flashed that skill but I think he is another couple years of hard work away. Finally Panocha looked fairly good and I am very intrigued by him. I wish Strbak was here but that's okay.

Good win. Personally I think the Sabres talent level in the prospect area is superior to Montreal so I would expect such a thing. In these short tournaments though you never know and I think Buffalo got better as the game progressed while Montreal just got more and more frustrated.

I would switch your 3rd star and 1st star.  I disagree with Benson slowing up in the 3rd - that was his best period.  He already has a ridiculous 200 ft game at 18 years old.  Rosen announced "dont forget about me" in the battle for the last forward spot on the roster probably between him, Rousek and Kulich.

    This team's pipeline is stacked

Sabres were valued at 635 Mil a year ago. Arizona was at the bottom at 435 M.

Actual revenue is a whole other story. Color me very skeptical.

And what did Pegs by the team at?  $200m?  That's (a) a good tax write-off for what he has been losing and (b) a nice appreciation

He's so much more assertive than he was a year ago.

I thought the best Sabre was Ryan Johnson, heads up and elusive with the puck, alert and closes fast without it.

Yes he was, but, being 23 years old, he should be at this point.  In saying that, he's playing the right side for the first time ever.  I also liked Lingren and Rosen in the first

Yea let’s freak out and overpay by a lot for Hart. Solid long term plan. Yikes. If Hart is even moved, one late first round pick would be the maximum he should get. And even that is an overpay. Olofsson/UPL and a 3rd or something equivalent is in the ballpark of Harts value IMO. Briere is out to lunch with his ask. And he knows it. But you can’t blame him for trying.

Agree - Oloffson, UPL and a 3rd should be enough to get it done.  Briere can then eat some salary and trade Oloffson for a 2nd or 3rd.  I do like the tandem of Levi/Hart a lot

Those were forced moves 2 players that asked for a trade .

When has Adams made a impact type trade like Briere or Drury the  Regehr trade

hell Murry even got ROR ,kane etc .

Adams biggest trade was washed up Eric Staal

So "forced trades" aren't actual trades?  Interesting.....Would seem to me that "forced" trades are harder than "real" trades as other GM's know you have to trade the player??  Seems to me that he didn't do too badly on these "forced" non-trades:

Eichel for:  Tuch, Krebs, Rosen, Greenway

    Reinhart for:  Levi and Kulich

Ristolainan for:  Hagg, Oslund and Wahlberg

I hope you can continue to tread water in your glass half empty view.......

Yeah I won't hold my breath what impact trade has he made to get this team to playoffs ?

Hell it's been 3 years of same Nonsense of not trading for a goalie.

The last GM to make a impact trade was jason botterill for Skinner

    Just sad

Trading for Tuch and Levi seems to have made an impact.  Krebs to a lesser degree, Kulich soon.  Reinhart for Levi and Kulich seems to be a grandslam at this point

Why do I get the sickening feeling that letting Ulmark walk is going to end up just about the most catastrophic blunder in Sabres history?

His success is a big part because of the Boston system.  We didn't let Ulmark walk, he chose to walk.  And who could blame him picking Boston over Buffalo??

    Ullmark in Boston playoffs

    2021-22  0-2 4.16  . 860

    2022-23  3-3  3.33  .896

Small sample size BUT it is alarming

Comrie is 28, and has 22 wins and a .897 sv% of in 47 career NHL starts.

UPL is 24, and has 20 wins and a sv% of .898 in 46 career NHL starts.

Why would you roll the dice on either?

I would have Comrie as my starting goalie in Rochester and send UPL in a trade for Hart, Markstrom or Hellebuyck

Adam’s has won far less than Beane at this time. Beane has turned Buffalo into a place players will go to.  Adam’s is still working on that.

It’s hard to compared GMs from different sports.

His record defies your comments. The Bills are a very strong team that has yet to win it all.  Like lots of other teams.

Sabres are on track, maybe.  Let’s see them make the playoffs and win something.    Has Adams done enough?

There's a lot of time left in the offseason, but, at this point, Adams has not done enough in this offseason. Hopefully things change

Which is exactly where the good D comes in. If you have one, that second shot doesn't occur.

Which is exactly what I said.

No, somebody else might get to say that but not you. You post all your snark and sarcastic memes and all your other BS so you don't get the high road unless you start to earn it.

Levi doesn't have a problem with the high glove (corner) shot because he remains tall.  He has an upright style not a butterly one.  This style leaves him vulnerable low to the corners, but, he counteracts this with elite leg quickness - watch the first NYR game where he anticipates a potential redirection and kicks out his right pad, making an amazing save look routine.

UPL has size, that's it.  He's very weak on his glove side, has below average quickness, below average positioning and below average rebound control. He's still young in goaltending age but that's a lot of issues to improve upon.

KA is playing a very dangerous game if he's relying on Levi to start and UPL to back up.  Comrie is probably the better backup (2 major injuries last year derailed his season), but if Comrie backs up, what do you do with UPL?  Not keeping 3 goalies and UPL wouldn't clear waivers an make it to Rochester.  Best solution is trade for a Hart, Marstrom type (with UPL in the trade) and stash Comrie in Rochester in case of injury.  This, unfortunately, doesn't seem the oath KA is looking at.  He has an irrational liking for UPL

Interesting, so for these types of players is it more of an act of good faith of the Sabres saying, "we believe in your development" so he's some additional financial incentive for you to put the work in? Curious to know the terms of these contracts.

Another question if anyone knows the answer, I know if a player plays 9 games it "burns a year" of eligibility on their rookie contract, this would have nothing to do with this? Assuming this guy doesn't touch NHL ice during the life of this contact would his next one pretty much be a standard rookie contract?

You are correct in both assumptions. It's a good faith futures contract basically and with his contract in Europe the 9 game thing doesn't come into play.  He needs a couple of years of maturing anyway

  12. This would be shocking, but, a reasonable path to go down if KA was willing to part with some assets and go for it:

    Hypothetical:

    - Trade UPL, Oloffson, Joker, Rosen, 2024 1st for Hellebuyck.

    - Hellybuyck signs a 2 year extension for $9m per.  This allows for Sabres Cap integrity going forward and allows for Hellebuyck to become a UFA while he's still in his prime and the cap is significantly higher in the summer of 2026.

-Levi plays mostly all in Rochester where he can acclimate being a #1 while playing 45-50 games.

-Levi becomes Hellebuyck's 1B in 2025 when Comrie is gone.

I don't think KA has it in him, plus he love Levi's too much I'm afraid, but:

53 years and still not a cup

now's the time for Connor Hellebuyck

    in what metric?

In games played last season he was top 15 amongst Goaltenders.

    His save % was 41st.

    He was 100th in GAA.

    source: https://www.quanthockey.com/nhl/seasons/nhl-goalies-stats.html

what's his goals vs expected? That to me is the best indicator.  It may not be good but will be telling.  ANA D was so bad it's hard to get any indication on the goalie.  Gibson prob isn't worth it given his salary, cost, recent numbers and attitude (pretty sure he turned down the Sabres last year), but, anybody who has confidence in UPL as a viable backup is delusional. He's been horribly erratic.

No. I would keep Olofsson and hope that he can play a more balanced game. Quinn getting hurt might give him an opportunity to play, even if it is on a lower line. The hope is that he regains his game and increases his value as an asset to be dealt. He may not be an all-around player but he still can shoot. That's a valuable trait that a lot of teams covet.

Yes, Gibson is a top 15 NHL goalie, UPL never will be.  Gibson has been beaten down by a defense that makes the Sabres D look like the Bruins.  Gibson would be better than fine as Levi's tandem.  His team gave up more shots per game last year than any team in the history of hockey.  Hockey has been around a long time..... .899 save % last year seucked for him, by far his worst, but compare it to UPL's

I have no idea how anyone has faith in UPL progressing.  He has underacheived in every league he's played in except for the one year in Juniors. I have much more confidence in Comrie, if he can have a health year

I’ve circled back to Hart being my favourite goalie acquisition.

He can handle the starters’ workload and has done fine on a bad team. He is young enough to fit into this team short term and perhaps longer term. He can help Levi navigate breaking in at a young age.

If Levi develops well then Hart can be moved for good assets.

I gree that he's the best option if Briere's demands for him become mroe reasonable

  18. Pesce makes more sense to pair with Power than Hanifan, though I believe Power can work with any partner.  Noah is kind of like Helleybuyck in that I love the player but isn't the right fit for the sabres current structure. Same with Gibson.  Give me Hart from PHI, who's clearly on the block, but Danny's price has to come down.  Hart for UPL, Busch and a  condiitonal 1st (If sabres win one round in the playoffs), a 2nd if they don't.  Hart is really good on a really bad team.  A tandem of Levi and him splitting games for the next 10 years would be nice
