  1. Yes I agree that goal is our weak point.  I'm happy to give Comrie a chance and hope he plays well immediately.  My gut feel worry about the current tandem of Comrie / Anderson is health.  Anderson can't handle a big workload and that's been acknowledged on all levels.  If Comrie goes down with the extra playing time then it's down to UPL and pretty weak from there (Subban?).  Maybe that's negative thinking but our depth in goal remains weak.

That's what I noticed in the preseason game. Cozens looks ready to take a step forward but many times he was left on his own and had nobody to pass to, no play to make, so he just tries to go towards goal on his own and 1 against 2 or 3 got nowhere. It's going to hurt him to not have solid and NHL ready line mates.

Yes, I agree with you from what I saw in pre-season but I trust that Granato will switch up this line if it's not working with Cozens, JJ and Krebs.  There are options to switch up the trio with Hinostroza, Asplund, Okposo.  I doubt his lines are firmly set right now.

  3. It's really felt like a lull to me this year in waiting for the season to start.  There was lots of anticipation with the rookie tournament and then the first pre-season games.  Now the lineup is pretty close to what we expected in the summer.  Peterka and Krebs both left me wanting more from them so far.  I have no problem being patient with both.  Perhaps with our full lineup in place they will get a bit more space to showcase their talents.  Thursday can't come soon enough and I do believe they will have a strong start this year.

And I thought everybody knew this…. I thought everybody knew that that’s what happens with these dogs… That’s the whole point behind it… That’s the whole story that was explained in the first place when the first dog made its rounds in the media.

    🤷‍♂️

I thought the first dog was going to RJ and that's why they named him Rick.  Kind of like the gold watch retirement thing.  😏

  5. At the end of the day teams all pretty much run into injuries where the 13F and 7, 8D and 3rd G end up playing.  This year looks good that we seem to have some depth.  Other than Bjork, I hope that we don't lose anyone on waivers.  I'm hoping that we start the year healthy and start really strong.

No one is disputing your point that Krebs still has a way to go before being slotted as a center. He's a very young player who although he struggled last year in the NHL, when assigned to Rochester after the season was concluded, proved to be their best center and one of their best players on that AHL team. I see the progression with still plenty of room to grow. In contrast to Mitts and Cozens, who are capable of playing both on the wing and center, I don't see that position versatility with Krebs. In my mind he is suited to play center and not on the wing.

Why don't you think he can play wing?  We've always been told that young centers have an easier time breaking into the NHL at wing and then transitioning to center when their defensive game improves.

We haven't seen Krebs successfully handle a winger role yet. I'm really hoping he makes a jump.

I'll keep saying it, Krebs isn't a center. Not yet at least.

    So which one is it?

I kind of assumed you meant center for the first post but many were saying he can't play wing?

    Thanks all.

    NS reporting for duty !!

We lived to tell about it.

We (collectively and relatively) in the Halifax area were very lucky that Fiona hit a bit further north east ... pretty much smack on the Canso Causway that links Cape Breton to mainland NS and point north east.  Pictou County, PEI and the south west of NL are destroyed.  Houses with people in them swept put to sea on Port-aux-Basque, NL ... one woman was rescued a second was recovered yesterday.

We had power back on about 24 hours after the storm.  Many others are still out even in other parts of Halifax area.  Forget about CB and Pictou County.

And spare me with this post-tropical nonsense.  Call it what you want, but when Fiona came ashore it was packing sustained winds of 100 miles / hour + it's a ***** hurricane.

Glad to hear your update and that you're doing okay.  The pictures have shown a huge amount of damage in some areas and I can't imagine the work that it will take to get things functional again.

I think this mindset — "you can't play (insert name here) 10 minutes a night with 4th-liners" — needs to shift.

First off, look at the coach and how he has used his players: Anders Bjork got 12 minutes a game. Brett Murray got 13. Cody Eakin and Mark Jankowski 13 1/2. Even John Hayden, the least-used forward on the team got just under 11 minutes.

Secondly, who are these 4-liners people are worried about? Girgensons? Hinostroza? Okposo? Asplund? Quinn? Peterka?

The first 4 are all guys who played 13:52 or more last year, and who have demonstrated the ability to score 10 or more goals and 30 or more points over a full season. The final 2 are two of the best forward prospects in the game. Our "top 13" has no outright plugs any more.

There's no rule that your 4th line has to remain nailed to the bench, or that it can't have 3 good players on it.

    That's not what I said.

My point when looking at the expected lineups this season is that many fans just take Girgensons, Asplund, Okposo and throw them together on a line.  My point is that I think Granato will play Okposo with one of the young centers.  It will be interesting.

I’ll say yes too.  That’s the first step.  Once everyone sees that the Sabres are a well run team with real expectations, it becomes a lot easier to improve further.  Players who have a choice will become a lot more willing to choose to join Buffalo.

But it's a trick question in my opinion (I pictured signing a deal with the devil) 😏.  A perennial playoff team obviously wins more regular season games so is more enjoyable for the fans.  But a perennial playoff team could lose in the first round every year or never win a playoff game.

I agree that playoffs are obviously the first step but yearly improvement towards winning the Stanley Cup is the ultimate goal.

So I'll change Pi's statement to:  "build a perennial playoff team with year over year improvements ultimately with the Sabres winning the Stanley Cup".

I would say no.  Obviously we need to get into the playoffs as a first step forward but it's hard to forget all the 1st round losses the Sabres have had over the years.  It's still too soon for me to see a ceiling but we should be able to get to the playoffs this or next season.

If Portillo really does not want to compete with Levi then I don't want him.  I don't want a player looking to slip into the lineup based on draft position status.

I agree with your point.  But from what I've read Portillo has never said that he won't sign with the Sabres and certainly not because he is afraid of Levi as the favorite prospect.  I would think that our current situation in goal is much less intimidating than when we had an established veteran in net like Hasek or Miller.  We also don't see goalies playing 70 games anymore so there's room for 2 good goalies.  Maybe Comrie will impress but we'll see.
