  1. It's nice to see Quinn get a game.  I imagine that he'll get some shifts on a couple of the lines.  Nice to see him show some chemistry with a line.

Also looking forward to seeing Power with Lybushkin.  Hope they play well together.

Mainly just hoping for a strong consistent effort with another win.

Because he was such a big part of this franchise, and especially at the end of his time here such a polarizing figure, there will be a lot of talk about him for a while.  Personally, I like talking and posting about his success, or failure, because seeing what he is/turns into has a lot to do with how well the Sabres did in that trade.  Does it matter for the team going forward? Nope, not really, but this is a message board and we are fans and the reason many of us are here is we like talking about things that are emotial triggers.   Once a game starts and I watch the Sabres, I have zero thoughts about Eichel, but between games, I like to follow the entire NHL, especially players that used to be part of the team.

Personally I have moved on for the most part.  I do hope that we beat Vegas with him in the lineup again this season but other than that I'm okay.  We had lots of discussion and debate on Eichel all last year.  I would continue to read the posts if someone started an Eichel thread.  My original post was really that based on the number of posts about Eichel (there should be a new thread) rather than filling up the Around the NHL thread.  It's not my call just my opinion.

Eichel was very entertaining to watch when he was healthy in Buffalo.

Still not convinced the direction needed to be completely reversed, but the die was cast & there's no going back.  The team is now at least as entertaining as the Eichel O'Reilly version on its best days but without any of the angst.  Go Sabres.

Really curious how things would've turned out had the Kane Bogosian trade never been made.  Without their 2 best buds to teach them how to be pros, maybe Jack & Reinhart buy in.

Yes I agree undoing the Evander Kane trade and I'll throw in the Lehner trade would have been interesting.  The total tear downs to get Eichel and then get past Eichel have been very frustrating to live through as a fan.  But at this point it's pretty satisfying to look forward to the current team growth, character, talent and expected success.

  4. I watched Saturday night's game between Edmonton and Calgary and was really impressed with Calgary.  I'm thinking that tonight's game will be easier to win than Thursday's (but not an easy game).  I'm expecting a Sabres win tonight.  Hinostroza will be motivated and he's played well with Cozens in the past.  Let's see how the other lines mesh Thompson with Tuch / Olofsson with Asplund (hopefully similar to last season when we were playing well).

  5. I saw this on the highlights today and thought it was worth posting.  Detroit's Larkin prevents the empty net goal (5:55 on the video) and they go on to tie the game and force overtime.  Would have been the perfect story if they had won.  Just goes to show that you should always score the empty net goal as quickly as possible.

Also noted that Husso did not look that great on a couple of the goals.

On the other hand, I think he knows he's at best a marginal NHLer and (although I'm not sure what his AHL salary is), he will still be getting paid to play the sport he supposedly loves.

Bjork is on a one way contract so he'll get his full salary, this year $1.8M even if with Rochester.  I know the cap numbers are different for the Sabres with sending him down but I believe Bjork gets his full salary regardless.

Asplund 100% deserves more TOI and to be the center of a line. I think having someone to feed Olofsson like him could be good.

Asplund had lots of chemistry with Olofsson last season so I would agree reuniting them for a few games would be good.  I do wonder if he plans on using Sheahan as the 4th line center when he's healthy again that will free up Asplund.

Something’s not right. Not that he was ever the fastest guy, but not only does he appear slower, all he does is wave his stick at people. I think he’s hiding an injury.

Maybe he tweaked something in his fight in the Carolina preseason game?

  9. Today's game is what it is.  Losing to the Panthers sucks but they are a great team.

My only criticism after listening to Granato's comments are that he said we just need time to get the powerplay going.  In my opinion the last two preseason games could have been better utilized to help the final roster in preparing for the season (instead of the first few regular season games).  The last two preseason games, we played quite a few of the Rochester bound guys.  (I know that this can still pay off with having Rochester get off to a good start but).

What do you see as the plan for 2 years from now, in net, if Levi doesn’t pan out?

That's why we should be trying hard to sign Portillo as well Leinonen from last year's draft.  We need the depth in the very least.  Remember the tragedy that happened with Blue Jackets goaltender Kivlenieks.  We shouldn't plan on bad things happening but lots of things can happen in life.  We're doing well home growing talent at forward and defense.

  11. When I first saw this signing this morning my initial reaction was that it was a good signing for the Sabres.  My second thought was to wonder why he wouldn't he play out the season first (bet on himself, bet on his performance).

If I was his father giving advice I would say take the guaranteed money but if I was the young player I would want to play out the season first.  I guess I've always based this on my own life in that I was always willing to prove myself in any job (not just potential).  I always felt that was a good character trait.

I not suggesting anything really about Samuelsson.  Like I said it's the safe bet to take the contract.  I do hope Cozens waits and has a great year before signing.
