  1. A name popped up in the Seth Jones rumors that I found interesting as a potential trade for Sam.  Travis Konecny from the Flyers.  He hasn't done as well statistically as Sam but he's not far off and he's a real good character player that can play in the top 6.  Has played RW mostly (like Sam) but came into the league as a Center.  He's signed for 3 more years at $5.5M.

How about trading Reinhart and Risto for Koenecny and Nolan Patrick?  Nolan Patrick would be a project to see if he can get back on track.  I think that I would prefer the Flyers 1st round pick but I'm not sure that they will do that deal.

Konecny is a name to watch if he gets moved to Columbus for Seth Jones.  We could get him from Columbus as a piece for a Jack or Sam deal.

    From Friedman’s 31 Thoughts

    10. There were rumours Jack Eichelbacked away from the disc replacement surgery and would consider a fusion instead, but several sources refuted that. Not true. There was a time I thought a trade might happen sooner rather than later, but after the expansion draft looks more likely. Who’s in there? My guess is Anaheim, Calgary, Minnesota and Vegas, with Boston, the Rangers and possibly Los Angeles on the periphery.

Tough to read the Kings on this one. The Sabres are looking for youth. High-level prospects and picks. The complicating part is Buffalo’s been very careful with Eichel’s medical records. They want to make sure trading partners are serious before allowing access. That’s a little different than St. Louis, which has indicated it will make Vladimir Tarasenko’s available.

Only one of those teams really has a deal that needs to be done before the draft and that’s Anaheim as 3OA would probably be the centerpiece of the return.

My apologies if this video was already posted (but I did not see it if it was).  There's a YouTube video on Jack Eichel's potential surgery options that I saw and found interesting.

While the doctor does not know anything about the specifics of Eichel's injury or situation he does offer an opinion that a fusion or Anterior Cervical Discectomy & Fusion (ACDF) would be the best surgical operation rather than a cervical disc replacement (as suggested by Eichel's side).  Peyton Manning had the ACDF and recovered to play again.  The doctor goes on to say that he would be really worried about anyone in a contact sport (like hockey or football) going through a cervical disc replacement surgery because of the amount of contact and potential to dislodge.

I believe Dreger is a master of trying to make it sound like he knows things when he doesn't and that Lebrun heavily traffics in favour-trading and butt-kissing his sources.

I also believe the vast majority of what McKenzie, Friedman, Lebrun and Dreger talk to real NHL sources and what they report is an accurate depiction of what they've been told. As you point out with the WGR example, you have to listen to what they are actually saying.

I believe the majority of what they've been told has been relayed by a 2nd-hand source, or a source with an agenda, but I also believe they are trying to inform to the best of their abilities and that their credibility is important to them.

So when they say "I'm being told the price is too high" I believe that they have been told that. And when they say "the Kings are still in," I think they have reason to believe it to be true.

So the volume of what we are hearing may be, as @nfreeman suggests, the Sabres, or Eichel's camp trying to create the impression of feeding frenzy in an effort to spark one, or it may be other GMs trying to pressure Adams to bend and take a lowball offer.

But, either way, at least one party is very actively looking to trade or trade for Eichel.

If it is just Eichel's camp leading that push, then there is a pretty good chance Eichel is not traded by the draft because he doesn't have a heckuvalot of power right now.

But if there is a team leading that push, then I think there will be a deal soon, and if that team is only the Sabres, I'm skeptical we're going to like the results.

I'm praying the buyers are as interested as the sellers and that Adams is able capitalize.

I agree pretty much with what you wrote.  They (McKenzie, Friedman, Lebrun and Dreger) definitely get some great info from inside sources and they do provide good entertainment for us as fans while we are waiting for some news to come out (from behind closed doors).  My point was just that they do add their own personal opinions quite often.  McKenzie is the exception because he tends to stick more to real info from sources usually only reporting when a deal is close to being done.

Most of what I've been reading is that no team wants to give up any of their top prospects for Eichel.  This sounds like the O'Reilly deal all over again which we can't afford.  Sabres need to stay patient and hold out for a top line center prospect even if it happens after the draft.  I still have faith this will work out as a fair deal.

We’ve also seen Dreger say he doesn’t believe the Ducks are as in as they’re reported to be. I think you’re demanding something too specific. If you hear several teams aren’t willing to go where the Sabres need them to go and/or aren’t as interested then that’s a reflection that the general interest either wasn’t as high as reported or is going down.

I’m not saying this is all the truth of what’s going on vs teams using the media to negotiate but more just saying what you’re saying isn’t there is definitely there in these reports.

Dreger was also on the Instigators and said that he thought the Sabres might be asking for too much (which was his personal opinion and not based on anything from a team source).  The next day it was reported as a fact by WGR that the Sabres were asking too much.

I've seen "Columbus is out" "the Kings were never seriously in" "the Avs are now in" "watch the Ducks" and all kinds of particular specific rumours like that.

I have yet to see a report that general interest has cooled, or an "if it happens." The reports have been the Sanres want to trade him, numerous teams have interest, some have serious interest and talks have been/continue to be ongoing.

If Minnesota firmly has Rossi off the table and the Sabres are just as firmly not interested in a deal that doesn't include him, then talks won't be ongoing two months later. There must still be common ground with at least one team where a deal can be made.

But how much stock do you put into these reports?  I think this is all part of the negotiations between the teams trying to get the best deal.

I'm surprised the Sabres haven't leaked it that they plan on keeping Eichel through rehab just to keep upping the offers.

I still expect this trade to happen after the expansion draft.  Insiders information is suspect in my opinion.  We absolutely need to get at least one A+ prospect for him and a top pick.  Still have faith in that occurring.

I'm definitely not convinced that Jones is just bad forever now. Don't want an eichel trade with him involved though

Agreed but Columbus could get assets that the Sabres would like for a potential trade.  But I have not convinced myself that they can get enough to make a deal.

  7. I still like Quinton Byfield and think that they would rather keep Turcotte for their future 2nd line center if Eichel is their new number 1.

They still have Kopitar who is still doing well statistically, 56GP, 13G, 37A, 50Pts (last season) so they are in good shape at center.  Also have Alex Iafallo.  So if they add Eichel and Turcotte develops as expected then Byfield can be dealt as part of the deal.

Here’s the thing. He has proven that he can be a very good 2C at worst (on an otherwise very bad team). Would someone be willing to trade a top 10 for a very good, young 2C? Depends. Obviously, whether it is 1-5 or pick 6-10. Would we have traded 8OA in 2017 (Casey) for a 25 year-old very good 2C? I would have to say absolutely. Plus, if the reports are to be believed, it sounds like GM around the league don’t have much faith in any one player outside the top 3-5 players.

The other wrinkle, and this might be holding up any potential trade, is whether Sam is willing to sign a longer term deal with the new team. If the “rental” label is removed, he fetches a higher return and certainly a top 5-10 pick in a “weak” draft.

Can someone confirm if he has arbitration rights this year?  I assume he does and that's why everyone keeps saying he will only sign a 1 year deal (through arbitration).  If no I think we would be able to get a multiyear deal out of him because there's no other option for him but to hold out (maybe an offer sheet - which could still be matched by the team or take the picks depending on the deal).

This is a day old but I hadn’t seen it posted anywhere. Dreger was discussing players that are available on the Sabres and mentioned the team hopes to keep Risto.

“Now, there are other pieces Buffalo would consider moving as well. You’re talking about Ristolainen. You’re talking about Sam Reinhart. I think they would prefer to keep Ristolainen unless the deal is too sweet to turn away from.”

How does this make you feel?

Personally I just don't think they have been offered a decent trade value for him (in past years and so far in the off season) meaning the Sabres decide to keep him.  Worst case he should have value at the trade deadline since he's a UFA next year.

I know some of the fans want him gone regardless but what's a reasonable trade for him right now at the draft?

If he moves, he most likely moves in part of a package with Jack or Sam at the draft or moves after the dust settles with free agency.

Thinking about more I think its more and more unlikely Anaheim gives up Zegras and probably stands pat, and takes  Dylan Guenther 3OU and has their next Getzlaf/Perry pairing for the next decade plus.

Yes I was thinking about this too.  I love the idea of this trade but I'm wondering what Anaheim thinks.  I assume they want Jack without giving up Zegras.  No thanks.

Eichel is a proven number 1 center and star with the ability to become a superstar if he can stay healthy and have productive players to play with.  Signed for another 5 years.

But if you look at that roster minus Zegras and perhaps Comtois in a trade they are pretty thin on talent.  Getzlaf, Henrique, Fowler, and Rakell.  I'm not sure they have enough to build now with Eichel in their lineup.

What are the other reasons that Anaheim makes this trade?

  11. What do you think the upside is for Zegras?  I really like him and he really catches your attention when he's on the ice.  Is he a 30 goal 80 point player when he becomes established in the NHL?

How do you think he compares to Cozens for upside (different players I know)?

  12. It's a big mistake if we trade Sam and Jack from our top line without getting back players that can step into the lineup with 1st line potential.  Picks in this year's draft are exciting but no one is going to play this year for the Sabres in my opinion.  It's a long wait for fans to get to see them develop.  I'm all for getting a 1st round pick but would rather have a A+ prospect ready to step in next season.

Worst case sign Sam to a 1 year deal (if we are forced to) and trade him at the deadline for 2022 1st and prospect.

  13. Hi everyone.  I'm new to the discussion but thought I would chime in with some thoughts on an Eichel trade.

I think that Anaheim will be difficult to deal with primarily because GM Bob Murray has been stingy in the past.  Would love Zegras though and the 3OA.

I think LA will be willing to give up Byfield and 8OA in a deal especially because Drew Doughty came out and said we want to win now.  They can't afford to wait 2-3 years for Byfield to develop.  He's also not as good as Jack.  I can see him as a future Sabre and doing well.  I think he has more upside than Alex Turcotte as a number 1 center (who I think they would like to keep as their future #2 behind Jack).

I'm thinking that Columbus is the most desperate of the teams after Jack.  They need to try and salvage the Patrick Laine trade by getting him a number 1 center.  They really don't have enough assets today in their system to make a trade work.  One thing that I hadn't seen discussed very much is a 3 team trade with Columbus getting extra assets for Seth Jones in order to make the trade happen.  Including Reinhart in the deal would allow Columbus to ship Seth Jones and Reinhart to make the deal work to get enough quality assets back.  What do you think about potentials coming from the Blackhawks, Flyers, or Avs?  I would love to get Konecny as part of a deal from the Flyers (what else?).  Kirby Dach and Reichel are very interesting from the Hawks.  Bowen Byram would be great if we could get him as part of a deal but they don't have a high draft pick.  I really believe that we need more than just futures for the returns.

Let me know your thoughts on a potential 3 team deal for Jack and Sam.
