Would that have made the team play better?  Honest question.

Would have gotten the message across, “This is not ok. Ever. Don’t care who you are. We will not disrespect ourselves, our fans, or Buffalo.”

Would it have made the team play better?… Long term? I think so.  We all heard Dahlin, Tuch, and Thompson ask for more accountability and one of them mentioned repercussions… I take that to mean discipline and consequences… Short term? Depends on who was benched and for how long…

Must be a couple slackers or even an asshat or two on the roster Granato couldn’t manage or wouldn’t address.

Give the message in the strongest terms… So every player has the information… Then, get back to work.

"I think a lot of times this year, we got away with some stuff that we shouldn't have gotten away with," he added. "I think if you clean those things up, then it sends a message."

Who thinks Ruff would have let that juvenile fan rebellion stunt go on for two weeks?…

Would bet a bunch he would have benched the ringleaders without hesitation to send a message to the team, the fans, and the town.

Im not exactly sure how much more angry or sad you want Tuch/Dahlin/Thompson etc. Do you want them to be crying? Throwing benches and threatening reporters with a stick?

Nope… Disgust is different from mad or sad… Disgust is a deep personal affront at themselves and their teammates… The context is their Clean Out remarks after missing the playoffs again and every year they’ve been a Sabre.

My only issue with Tuch as captain has always been, can he be a bad cop? Dahlin seems capable of pulling off an angry Swede. Tuch almost seems too friendly and upbeat to be threatening.

Tuch loves his teammates and isn’t afraid to show it… UPL would agree… Never heard Tuch naturally upbeat in an interview… When he is positive it is measured…

He’d be thrilled to be Captain, no doubt … Maybe he’d rise to the challenge… He’s 28 next month… Into the straightaway of his career… Time to get some serious focus.

I challenge anyone to watch the locker room clear out videos/interviews and tell me Tuch shouldn't be the captain. Compare him to Dahlin and decide for yourself.

As for Greenway, somebody test that dude for THC content or something. Talk about over mellow detachment. Wow.

Also noteworthy are Tuch's comments on Ruff and Gallant.

Neither exhibits the game in game out fire of a great C, imo…

In their Clean Out interview, neither is sufficiently disgusted with missing the playoffs again this season and every season they have been Sabres… Five years and running for Dahlin… Three years for Tuch…

Both lack a positive and determined persona, tone, and vocabulary… Cliches and excuses, mostly… (Okposo was an awful example for them)…

Yet, one of them is likely the next C… Dahlin, if you believe the poll results.

We aren’t privy to what is said off ice, at practice, in the locker room before, during, or after games… I do believe a gifted C can make a difference to any team.

He's still a relatively young player but he's played in enough games where potential, whatever it is,  needs to be translated into actual performance and production.

Agree… I like Krebs… He has high compete and enthusiasm… Loves the wall battles… Always has a smile on his face when the camera catches him on the bench… usually talking to teammates…

Kid has got to show his skills and embrace an identity if he’s not traded and given a chance by the new HC… Will be rooting for him.

  6. Just listened to Adams’s presser… 44 minutes… First time he’s been humble in his public comments in my memory…

Took his mask off… Admitted his failure as GM… Rightly took the bullet for Granato… without letting the players off the hook…

First time Harrington, Lyskowski, Hamilton et al put hard questions to him publicly … and he answered every one he could with patience and intelligence…

Provided great insight into his thinking, his relationships and his process… Bravo, Adams… Looking forward to his off season decisions.

Why did Ellis survive the purge?

    Good question…

We can assume it’s not because of his performance coaching the PP all season…

He came to the Sabres in 2020 as Director of Player Development after his playing career ended, so he has worked closely with most of the kids on the roster.

Think the best answer is his relationships… with Pegula, Adams, the hockey staff, and the players and prospects.

Imagine he may be the eyes in the room for the owner to keep an eye on Adams… and the fraternal continuity Adams lost when he fired Granato.

Bearing in mind… All business is people business.

There will be coaches old and young who view the Sabres as "bad credit" and dangerous for their career going forward.

Ha… If what might be “dangerous for his career” is a coach’s focus… we wouldn’t want him anyway… The focus has to be an “exciting opportunity.”

The Sabres can offer their next HC every bit of an exciting opportunity…

Only those who see it need apply.

  9. Was an early critic of Granato and thought he lost all credibility when he was mum on the player rebellion and let it go on too long… Evidence for me he wasn’t strong enough for the leadership demands of the job… Despite excellent hockey IQ, analytical and verbal skills, players stopped listening to him… Wasn’t surprised… Most pro athletes are alpha males and don’t respond to weak leaders…They think they know better.

Granato gave it his all… Walks away with some valuable experiences, great relationships and financial security… He will be fine whatever he ends up doing.

    6 months too late Kevyn.

DG was a dead man walking in Nov/Dec, you could hear it in his pressers, he knew what was at stake.

Edmonton moved quickly before their season imploded, Buffalo put their head in the sand.

There has to be a higher standard and higher sense of urgency top down in this organization for things to change.

Without insight into the dynamic between Adams and Pegula, agree the firings were six months too late, but only if Adams had the ability to do it at any point sooner. Perhaps he didn’t.

Expect any experienced NHL HC will want to partner with Adams on future changes to the roster he inherits. Unless the new HC is on board, offseason trades and FA pick ups will be all Adams and Pegula. Makes me think the new HC will be named soon.

No question that pro sports are very much a high stakes business. But it's also a competition. If there is little desire to compete with the big boys, then it's better to get out.

What's really frustrating about Terry Pegula is that he has become a behind the curtain invisible owner. No one knows what his thoughts are regarding this stumbling franchise.

Pegula isn’t committed to the Sabres winning. It’s the investment appreciation and ownership status that keeps him an owner, imo.

The fact that I wouldn't mind seeing any of these guys traded says alot imo. In years past I had at least 1 player I wanted to keep at very least but I don't feel that way about any of this core group of players, maybe Benson is about all I'd want to keep.

What does a captain do? would be a good place to start.

As I see it the captain's duties are in no particular order...

    1. Represent the team in the community and in the league

    2. Communicate with the officials

    3. Be a go between between the players and coaches

    4. Represent the team in the media and maybe even talk to the media behind the scenes... Hey you're being tough on this kid... Off the record he has this and this going on

    5. Communicate with teammates, put out fires, keep the room happy and in line

    6. Command and lead... Stfu we are NOT disrespecting the fans here

    7. Be an honest player on the ice. Model behavior

Does this sound like Tuch or Dahlin?

Nice job, @PASabreFan…Solid list of Captains duties… Think you got them all…

Dahlin could mature into a C in a few years… Too soon to say… Tuch is of the Okposo mold… Nice guy but not demanding enough of himself and his teammates, imo.

Don’t see a long term C on the roster yet… Next C should be a bridge.

And they did the same thing last season. The record is a reflection of their talent and construction: not a reflection a of coach not alchemically inspiring them to greater heights. I’m not saying a coach makes no difference I’m saying the margins aren’t close to what you are making them, when we see such an EXTREME issue consistently arise, that of slow starts, it’s a player issue.

I’ll ask again, how could the players possibly not understand the need to start on time? What could a new coach possibly say that would make them go, “oh, I get it.” ? If they can’t grasp such an obvious fact it’s assuredly on the group

It’s a group born into, baptized, and moulded by a narrative from on high that preaches patience and process and imo an aversion to real-time expectations and this bleeds into the very fabric of the construction of a roster

asking a coach to go in and wave his wand and change the very nature of what Adams assembled is absurd

Well said, @Thorny and solely a result of this regime’s making…

Also know when you change the conditions, you change the behavior…

Abysmal starts went on for months… What did Adams and Granato change?…

Nothing, really. Juggled a line or two. Cut minutes on a few guys late in the season.

If it’s on the players as you say, management never got their attention… Adams, Granato, and Okposo failed as leaders.

We got rid of Okposo, a good man but a miserable Captain, imo…

Time to get rid of the others… Do it in the offseason or do it during the season on a probationary basis as someone suggested…

But at the first whiff of complacency… as evidenced by a lack of Commitment to Winning… Cut bait.

Listening to him is sickening as he blathers on while saying nothing and taking 0 responsibility.

    Granato is not HC material…

He proved it again this year with his inability to send out a team prepared to play hard hockey from the first puck drop, to his line change management with the home ice advantage, to his wholly ineffective PP system, and his redundant postgame analytical explanations for poor efforts and results…

I’m giving him a pass on spending the last few preseason games auditioning prospects instead of playing his starters for 60 minutes… No Commitment to Winning…

And his inexplicable and unacceptable public reaction to the team’s adolescent stunt responding to the boos and fan chants for his firing…  Absence of Leadership.

Excited to hear the organization’s plans for next season.

The best thing is that the team already has the excuse of starting the season in Europe lined up when they get off to a 4-13 start and the season is over by Thanksgiving.

Our Sabres headlining an NHL promotional tour to start the next season?… Wouldn’t have been my choice unless we are at the end of a rotation selection system… As if our youngsters need the distraction of a quasi European vacation to getting off to a winning start.

It is not the norm for the fans of an NHL team to endure this level of ineptitude for this long from a coach or GM (not to mention from the overall franchise.

Or be expected to pay for season tickets, game day tickets, parking, and concessions with hard-earned wages or other income… when the owner doesn’t care enough to insist his GM, Coach, and Players commit to a winning effort every single game.
