Not to single out Samuelsson but his quote, like many of the the others, is a big part of Adams talking points.

Samuelsson has a lot of balls talking about the team needs to work harder next season… Watched this guy glide through too many shifts without ever taking an opponent into the boards or even finishing his checks… Mr. JustCallMeGlance.

Pimlach is on it. They were given talking points and they each gave their own spin on the same general statement. “We need tough love and all that.” It’s an attempt to keep these guys from wandering off into statements  that smack of dissension.

    Sure sounded scripted…

Looking back at the last two years you see a GM who is responsible for holding this team back. If  KA had just got us right in goal, the last two years could have been playoff years.

    Agree…

Adams bungled goaltending since taking the job. Let Ullmark walk… Didn’t get an NHL goalie after Anderson retired…

Committed too many games early to Levi this season… and too much time to the 3 Goalie rotation.

I suppose you could use a players sh% as some kind of multi plier or you could compare that player to league average from that spot and adjust. So if Tage has 100 shots from the spot and 7 go in but the league only has 5, you could average the two and give it a .06xgf. Hmm, I'd have to think about it and would need a statistician to really do that work.

Yes goals are the end all be all but goals are rare. Cozens for example just had a strange season he's gonna bounce back from but his xgf helps there. It's also why last offseason everyone public model predicted a Sabres scoring regression. Sure, shooting talent matters and you can consistently be above your xgf but if you're multiple standard deviations above, that doesn't work.

The other thing if I were a team, I'd classify each player into a cohort 1-4 based on their shooting talent. You could then adjust the xgf by player cohort. If you're a top 25% shooter in the league the avg sh% is .08 but if you're a bottom 25% it's .04 and that would really help adjust the xgf. I'm unsure of how granular the private nhl tracking data is. Once you have 3 years of data though, I'd bet the numbers could be stabilized with a confidence interval because they should fall on a bell curve.

Standard deviation, Regression, Cohort, Confidence Interval…

You boys are deep into the weeds this morning!…

You’re bringing back some awful memories 😱

  4. I remember listening to Hamilton on WGR 550 pounding the table early in the season that “Hits don’t matter!!”…

They mattered plenty when teams figured out the Sabres are soft… and came out in 1st periods hitting early and often to slow the Sabres speed and set the tone for the game.

Think Hamilton likes to hear himself talk.

Out of curiosity, are there any HOFers in any sport that credit a sports psychologist for their success? Genuinely asking.

Dr. Bob Rotella: Widely regarded as the "Godfather of Sports Psychology for Golf", Rotella has worked with over 100 companies and countless professional golfers, including players who have won over 300 tournaments and 74 majors.

He spent a day with a small group of executives 25 years ago… Fascinating stories.

On the ice isn’t a factor anymore, on April 18th. These are the days we score press conferences and exit interviews because measuring by what we see on ice didn’t give us the answers we wanted

For me personally, this captain stuff is significantly overblown in general. Think of it this way:

If Tuch, or anyone, HAS the ability to lead and they WEREN’T doing it already, when the team was *SO* calling out for a leader this year, how can that person be the rightful captain? Wouldn’t a captain have stepped up, letter or not, if they truly had it in their blood?

The guy who can pick up Thor’s hammer can do so letter or not. If he needs the letter, he’s no captain at all

Leaders lead. Captains are about messaging. Dahlin gives a more consistent effort than any other player. But, more importantly, he’s paid the most. Why the hell give a guy 11 million if he can’t bear extra stitching. My gosh.

Make Tuch captain. Give him a long term contract into his 30s. Bring him back like they did KO season after season when in reality they should have moved on, because they have no choice but to “do right” by the captain.

When is Tuch’s 1000th game again?

You mangled @dudacek’s post with your cut and paste…

That aside, agree with your opinion about Leaders. They step up when frustrated to fill the void… Very well reasoned and stated, @Thorny.

Do put more importance and value on the C than you, though…

Your Tuch proposal had me laughing… Would be just like Adams to replicate the KO mistake… Earnestly, of course…

Believe Mr. Peabody has the best idea.

The guideline I think should be the Thompson contract that preceded his current deal:  3 x $1.4 million.  It shows some commitment and belief from the team while giving the player the combination of security and some runway to clarify exactly what they are. Will the next contract be the same or less because they have made clear they are a bottom 6 or 4th line player?  Or, will the next contract be a difficult decision for the team as there is not enough cap space to cover the warranted raise?

    I like your guideline.

I’m generous by nature… and I know Compete and Enthusiasm are difficult to acquire if you aren’t born with them… unless you are in a culture and on a team that has them… Krebs has them… Benson has them… Dahlin has them… Maybe a few others… It’s a start.

So you started following when the nightmare happened God bless your soul

Big fan back in the early years… Scotty, Gil, Renee et al… Got distracted by demanding career and only checked the standings and didn’t follow the news or stories… Started following the Sabres closely again 20 years ago when I retired.

    Holy overpayment Batman!! 😱

No… Overpayment is $49M for 7 years to Cozens… or $58M for 7 years to Powers… both Come Bets… I’m willing to pay for Krebs’ shift-in shift-out High Compete and Enthusiasm … attributes in short supply on the roster… It can be infectious in team-building… Giving Krebs a couple years at $2.5-3.0 per to prove his worth is my Come Bet… Hope he gets a chance to prove me right or wrong.
