    Wow.

Halifax is a great place, but has been and is, although it seems to be changing, a good 10 years behind everywhere else.

As recently as 6 years ago when I was last looking seriously at going back to that 'other' world and had gone to the second interview stage for a job that I was recruited for.  They were very professional about it, but went with another candidate.  They sent me a hard copy in the mail of what my lovely wife refers to as the '***** off and die letter'.

So, I should not expect that letter, or anything, eh?

    +++++

On another note ... your presence seems to have continued the Sabres terrible play and / or results in St. Louis.  I hope you did manage to enjoy your night out, somehow, in spite of the Sabres.

Well I don’t know what you do and if you are trying to move to the USA.  A lot has changed in six years. The young engineering grads of today are not the same as I was in 1981, nor would I expect them to be.  Companies no longer offer pensions, so loyalty is not a factor.  You can bet that a young talented engineer in the US will change companies within 2 to 5 years.  Unless they love the place they live and love their life outside of work they will move on and get a big pay jump too.  Expect them to change job many times.  My 31 year old daughter is a journalist and now with her fourth company.     Her salary would not increase without these moves and the time to do it is when you are young and more mobile.

Not sure what you were recruited for 6 years ago but today we do not sent letters in mail.  Everything is done via internet portal and email. If you don’t get the job you get an email saying such.  If you apply with me I will call you and talk to you either way.  I will answer questions and wish you the best.  I may even point you to another opportunity.  I am old school. Most people won’t do this.   Most companies have stripped down HR teams and outsource their staffing teams ... Cost cutting.

    ++++

I did enjoy the night out, despite the Sabres performance and outcome.  Thanks

There's a whiff of "we're big shots, just put your stick on the ice" with this team. You see how they play when really challenged. Then there's Florida, St. Louis, (insert name of another lowlight they lost to)...

I saw this yesterday.  There we too many times they did not even have their stick on the ice, even in the offensive zone.  Lots of posing yesterday.  They did not hit either.

Very kittle traffic in front front of the net. The harmless perimeter passing on the PP was got to stop. Need a body in front.

Reinhart was invisible, so was Mitts.  Even Risto was quiet.  I want the evil Risto back and playing with McCabe.   Put Pilot on 3D with Beaulieu.

I’m fairly confident that your attendance had nothing to do with result, but 0-16 might require a ban on you seeing your beloved.  And $450 for three seats in St. Louis when they struggling surprises me.  I agree we need a call up.  Elie to Roch should happen by Saturday.  Give the writers for the News and the fans something to talk about.  I think CJ, Oloffsson and Nylander are destined for a spot sooner or later.  Give one or two a shot and see if they click.

Ha ha, no way am I carrying the load on 0-16.  I’ve seen Gil, Housley, Andreychuck, Ramsey, Turgeon, Hasek, LaFontaine, Mogilny, Miller, Briere, Drury, Vanek, and the tank era teams. Besides a few ties and an OTL last year it’s almost always a lackluster road game that is played here.  One year I stayed home to finish my basement remodel only to hear LaFontaine and Mogilny light them up on the radio for a rare win.

I lived in Buffalo when we narrowly beat the Blues and the legendary Eddie Stanowski in a 3 game playoff series.

This year my wife bought the tickets in the prime 100 level ($130 x 3),  add handling fees ($30), and parking ($20) and there you go.

Most of my tickets were free giveaways from my work, but with my track record the desire to keep going there died last night.

I told my wife I’m done paying for this game.  I enjoy it more on TV anyway

For the next game I would like to see Oloffsson in place of Ellie May.

Is 'Ghosting' a thing for hiring managers?

    Asking for a friend.

My wife told me that the trend now is to 'Ghost' a friend and just ignore them and not even tell them that you are doing it.

I had an interview in early December and they expected to move to the next step prior to Christmas.  Nothing.

It is a big (the biggest) bank and things move very slowly.  The hiring manage was going to talk with other departments to see about best fit.  It's a pert-time job that I am over qualified for, but I am easing into retirement / sale of my accounting practice and just want to have a steady part-time paycheque.

So, what do you guys and gals think?  Will I hear anything (either way), or not?

Not where I work.  We are too busy and get little support from HR.

I hire engineers.  Electrical, computer, mechanical and aerospace.  We have trouble hiring and retaining.  There are more jobs than qualified people right now.

  5. Well I am back from  the game.

The Blues games are loud.  Very loud.  Their fans are loyal and they know the game.  They have a set of cheers they follow they get the place going … and the Blues sent them home happy.  Blues games remind me of the Sabres games in the Aud.  The HSBC/First Niagara place is a morgue in comparison.  Large, dark and cavernous.  I saw a bunch of Sabres fans tonight, all dejected as usual but all very hopeful for the promise that could be ahead.

I talked hockey with several Blues fans.  They fear Eichel and are impressed by him.  They like what is happening to Buffalo hockey finally, especially with us un another conference.   Several wondered why we were so bad with Kane, Eichel and ROR.  I told them our goaltending and defense were minor league level last year.

On to the game.  I am very down.  My record for Sabres games in St Louis is essentially 0-16, attending games on and off since 1988.  I saw a few ties, last year was a shootout loss, but never have I seen a Sabres win in St. Louis.

You guys saw it.  Other than the first line we have no mojo.  I thought Hutton blew the first goal.   Defensive lapses lead to the others.  Our Power play got a goal but really looked bad on the first attempt.  Eichel's line provided all off the offense.

Seeing Mitts and Tage up close, I was in the 17th row, it was obvious they are very marginal NHL players.   Tage does not play with NHL coordination.   He muffed chances to shoot and to pass and he was very poor on breakouts.  Mitts, I don't know?  He needs to be stronger and I think he needs to go to the AHL for awhile.  He plays without confidence.

Watching Sobotka and Tage versus ROR was humbling.  I would not make that trade again.  Not sure we would be the same team with ROR in our locker room but he was one of the best players on the ice every time he was on it.

Dahlin missed a golden chance to score.  He let someone get behind him again and made a few careless plays.  He excited the crowd a few times with his speed and moves.  He gets "snuffed out" at times, that will change once he gets stronger.

Was not impressed with Scandella's game and prefer to see Beaulieu.  I think Nathan brings more offense and more grit too.  I think McCabe should be on 1D pair with Risto, not Pilut.

Sheary plays alone.  Very noticeable player, high motor, always working but there is never another Sabre with him to create offense.

KO and Sobotka did nothing.  E-rod at least hustles and shoots the puck.  Ellie should not see the ice anymore.  He refuses to shoot.

For our next game, which is at home, I think calling up a player from Rochester to replace Eliie would be wise.

Overall  the Sabres were totally outplayed, they took long periods off with no offense generated, and they were careless in their own end.   If you did not look at the standings before the game you would think the Blues were the superior team.   Making it worse, some of the worst performing players on the Blues team scored today.   Last years lousy Sabres team came in here and took the Blues to a shootout.

I paid almost $450 for 3 tickets.  That hurts.

  6. I am going tonight.  I have seen about 15 Sabres games here.  All losses.  I really dont understand it, yeah, most of the time the Blues were better but not always.    I saw the Drury/Briere team lose here, ran out of legs in the 3rd period.  Last year the terrible Sabres team lost in OT

The Blues fans are rabid and loud.  My wife was surprised by the energy in that building, much more raucous than Keybank.  Sabres need to get a lead.

Hopefully tonight will be different, I deserve to see a win.

Three weeks ago I interviewed for a position I was very excited about. It was the third interview, two phone interviews previous then face to face. It was a five hour process with eight different people. It started off slowly but by the end I was all but certain I had the job. The person I'd be reporting to literally walked me to HR to discuss next steps (the person we needed wasn't there). So I left believing I was taking the next step in my career.

I knew they had several candidates but growing impatient, I texted the person I'd be reporting to and asked what the timeline was for this process. She told me a couple weeks. So two weeks later I emailed HR to check on my status. No response. I texted another person I interviewed with and he claimed they had another person to interview. So I reached out to another contact in the industry who knows the involved parties and he's going to poke around to find out what the deal is.

So did I screw this up (post interview) as none of you should know how that went?

37 years of experience in the corporate world.  All companies are different and times they are a’changing but here are my thoughts.

There is pretty much no “knocking it out of the park” in today’s environment.  Most leadership jobs are coded as “underutilized “ so if they have a list of candidates expect them to interview a diverse pool of candidates and check all boxes.

I prefer to to ask all my “process” related questions at the end of the interview and not post interview.  Follow up process related texts and emails might be a negative to some, they probably think they covered this already.   That said, a nice follow up letter/email thanking them for their time and expressing your desire is a must and should be sent the next business day.

These long periods with no contact are difficult   My son recently had this situation several times, it never worked out positively but at my company it is becoming more normal to take a long time to hire.  One reason is the use of global staffing systems with hiring professionals outsourced and not on site to help

HR ain’t what they used to be   Most companies rely on Skelton crews for HR (cost cutting) and push much of the hiring work onto the hiring manager. At our company HR reps usually cannot answer job related or hiring timeline questions, they are limited to internal hiring compliance related tasks   They represent the company not the potential employee

Time  of year is important and end of year is prone for delays.

I would avoid too much texting and process questions.  After the initial follow up email I would reach out  every few weeks to express interest, ask if they need more information, reiterate your commitment, etc.

    Good luck.

Edit.  Duh.  I see you heard back.  Decided to leave my comments in place.  I like your attitude, be the best you can at your current job and keep eyes and ears open for more opportunities.

Haven’t their fans seen enough trades with us?

They love O’Rielly and they don’t miss Berglund or Sobotka, but if Tage develops and we get a lottery pick (they could be a lottery team this year and next) they might change their tune.

    Two hockey thoughts:

    1. We’re a different team when McCabe plays. We outplayed the Caps last night but blew it with a couple stupid plays (and ran into a hot goalie) and tonight’s game was a solid 60 too.

    2. Ullmark is money on Saturdays. And it’s becoming easier and easier to imagine him in net long term for us.

McCabe and Scandella as the third pair => very solid.
