Agree. No mortgaging the future at this point.
Our 2 and 3 line are equally ineffective.

Dahlin’s play has been nothing short of excellent. Not only for a rookie but overall.
Phil is playing him So much partly because McCabe and others are out. Still Dahlin’s play has been solid, yes a few mistakes are made but overall excellent. Possible Calder Trophy.
Mitts is playing 2C because he is the best we have. Berglund and Sobotka did not cut it. 2C is a #1 problem on this team right now. Don’t blame Mitts, if you must assign blame look at Boterill
Buffalo is overachieving so far. We are not as good as our record. We lack scoring balance and we lack physical grit. You saw that tonight and it’s only going to get harder as the season progresses. That said we look to be a full year ahead of the rebuild and have a very good chance of making the playoffs although I doubt we can sustain the pace we set thus far.
Dahlin and Mitts are learning. They need experience and more physical strength. One is 18 and the other just reached 20. Phil is playing his best players, as he should be. The effort is there, including mistakes.

Hockey has not changed that much. Sure, the days of carrying a pugilist on your roster are gone but teams that win always answer these challenges. A player can take on Yandle and lose and get more respect than a team that does nothing.
This carried Florida into the 3rd. Florida beat Toronto and Boston. They are not far behind us in talent.

Watching Skinner get mugged only get 2 minutes. Unbelievable Yandle chased him down the whole shift.
Failure to score on the PP and failure to engage with Yandle after that
Marty is with me. We needed to respond and did not. To me that is the most telling part of the game. They come into our rink and take liberties. Fight their Captain and show some balls.
As good as we can be at times we will not win a single playoff series if we cannot respond to that kind of play better.

They were outplayed tonight. Outworked for sure. Goaltending was way in Florida’s favor too.

Yandle can skate and has skill but he is not known for fighting, or even for hitting. Of course he is a big man against Skinner.
He should have got more than 2 minutes...
Not happy with the PP. ok, great puck movement but very few shots. We have had as many CHANCES on the PK.

Skinner did not dive and he did not agitate or instigate anything with Yandle. His hit on Barkov was not a penalty either but Barkov fell into the boards in an odd manner. Apparently Yandle and the Panthers decided to rally around this.
Look at the replay, I can replay the game and I have watched it a few times, Yandle chased Skinner with the purpose of fighting him. He grabbed him and rode him into the boards, he put him in a headlock. Then Yandle dropped his gloves and body slammed him. Skinner smartly took the penalty, never dropped them, nor should he. No Sabre came his aid which I think is a problem, but ok, in todays game we frown on that I guess.
So lets get them with a power play goal and go up 3-1. The Power play had all kinds of zone time and passed the puck arounf the Florida box, barley taking shots, and they had no on in front of the net. Just 5 guys passing it around the perimeter wasting time. So no goal. This is where I would have expected someone to go after Yandle. Oh yeah, that is frowned upon today.
Next thing you know Yandle throws a shot that is wide of the net and it gets tipped in. Tie game. Their Captain has them fired up, no one on Buffalo wants to answer the bell for his indiscretions in our rink except the fans who are booing him at every turn.
Then the "travesty" of Dahlin losing the puck, the penalty shot, the almost save. 3-2 and the Sabres are done, but they were already done and minutes later they gave up another.
Defending yourself still has a place in the NHL. Not too many teams would have let that happen without a response. No way did Skinner dive or instigate. Dahlin did not lose the game buy his mistake. We have come back from worse this year.
Buffalo backed down and Florida imposed their will.
