Follow up question: is there a widely-circulated NHL draft pick value chart that can ballpark potential trade values? I'm more familiar with NFL drafting and the competing value charts referenced therein.

I'm not aware of such, but NHL teams are less likely to trade out of the top of the draft, so even if you could establish a hypothetical value, it's unlikely to come into play as a real event.

It will be one of the cbs left. Elam, McCreary, Booth JR, etc.

Uggh. Booth is the only one of those worth taking @25. Kyler Gordon (part of the etc.) maybe. Elam is soft, not a willing tackler, just no. I have been advocating on the football side for a trade up with the Giants who are reportedly open to trading 7. I personally want Jameson Williams, but Sauce might be available and Stingley would. For Williams or Sauce, I am trading next year's first to get it done.

I think if we don't move up, we could take Breece Hall @25, though I don't think rb is good asset management in the first and they could probably get him with a small trade back.

For all the schadenfreude and ass shining in this thread, I think we need a little perspective.

We're the same team, only we aren't playing anyone who has anything to play for.

And no matter where Vegas' pick ends up, it ain't helping us make the playoffs next year.

The expectatons were not the same, and it still makes some difference to have a better draft pick. And really, if by some chance LV ends up on the outside, Hula Hoop Eichel ought to make a celebratory return.

I think Vegas is still in a position where if they just win their games they will get in. Nashville’s schedule is rough. Dallas has their Van/Cal/Edm stretch and they host the Knights. LA’s schedule is comparatively easy but they just aren’t that good right now. Vegas has three in a row at home v Devils, Caps and Sharks. If they sweep they will likely be well positioned a week from now.

I think Vegas is going to have to falter further to miss.

They can do it. Chia Pet Jack is like the survivor of a shipwreck on that old series, Night Gallery. If you pick him up, you are doomed.

He’s going to be a UFA with 32 NHL teams to choose from.  There are a million reasons why a UFA would choose one of the other 31 teams.

I can’t speak for the other pessimists, and I don’t think this means the franchise is doomed, but I don’t see how anyone could interpret this as anything other than the Sabres probably losing a very good prospect.  No more, no less.

Count me on team pessimism. I don't really understand it. Yes, bad eleven years, but the team is ascending, is building a young core, and clearly has a wide open opportunity at goalie.

Regardless of who he wants to sign with, if he’s waiting until the end of next year, what possible incentive could he have to just not wait a couple months and then sign with any number of teams, including the Sabres? Honestly, it would be pretty stupid of him not to wait.

This, of course, is entirely understandable. Do other teams routinely lose out on college prospects?

I disagree with you on Jameson Williams. I think he will make a difference for the team that picks him year one, you just have to wait till mid-season. All that said, I live near Athens and Pickens is a fella I think will be a very good pro. No way you get him in the third, however. You'd have to trade up into the top of the second, imo.

I see.  Yeah, females were rare at most SF cons.  The Cleveland club had several and, oddly, much of Blake's 7 fandom was female at the start.  The largest student club at Case Western Reserve, the Star Trek club, was almost exclusively male.  If you don't believe that a university existed in 1986 where the largest student club was the Star Trek club, get a load of this:

Back in the 1985-6 academic year, I had a friend who whose work-study assignment was in the mainframe security group for the new VAX-11/780's.  There had been a data breach of some sort at another geek school, so he was tasked with writing a script to find whose passwords were far too obvious.  With an 8 character limit on things, he knew people might have passwords like "password."  So he wrote a script to try passwords during the first weekend of Spring Break.

Embarrassingly, almost 10% of accounts had the specific password, "Spock" -- no variation, just "Spock".  "SPOCK", "spock", "5pock", "$p0ck",  and numerous other variants pushed the total to well over 10% -- professors included.  The list was every 1 and 2 character combination (42, B7, ST, and DW came up often) with a boat load of references to science fiction, Monty Python, the Goodies, Dave Allen, Benny Hill, class codes (e.g., the freshman programming course was CMPS-131; that and variations on it turned up frequently), people's initials, and their student numbers.  That cracked over 80% of the passwords on campus.  Needless to say, an awful lot of people had to change their passwords after returning to school.

Too funny. Dave Allen. That's a blast from the past. I used to have an old cassette tape with some of his skits on it. Missing finger, Irish blarney, just a fella sitting on a stool sharing observations. Sigh.

She lives in the Pittsburgh suburbs with her husband; her 3 kids have graduated college.  I remember her calling me at MSU when "May Day!" went national verifying that it was the same announcer as in 1986.

As I think about it, was it on WBEN at that point?  In my mind's eye, for some reason, I can see the radio set to the middle of the dial.  I remember we lost to Hartford and that FallCon was where John Nathan-Turner announced that the Peri character had been killed off a half hour before his first panel, which was Part Eight of "The Trial of a Time Lord" -- 25 October 1986.  So that makes the game the 5-4 loss to Hartford on 24 October.   I remember JN-T brought the studio cut of "Shada" to the con -- the first time it had ever been shown legally in the western hemisphere.

Aside: some incidents from FallCon (plus other things I can enumerate another time) are a large part of the reason why several writers for the new Doctor Who include references to Buffalo, NY.  (Several Buffalo expats, including the group that ran FallCon, have friends on the production team and were told from the source.)  For instance: aside from "Buffalo" being the over-ride password for UNIT computer systems in "World War Three", River Song was scripted as "the Beautiful River Song" in "Silence in the Library" while the fried ravioli and medium wings in "Voyage of the Damned" were JN-T's favourite American foods.  There are several others.

Oh, and FallCon cemented my reputation among Big Name Fans as an eccentric questioner.  Kids and grandkids of several friends of mine claim this as part of their evidence that I inspired the Indian character in the iCarly episodes, "iStart a Fan War."

It was just a throwaway joke. I used to go to a lot of scifi conventions when I was younger. Girls were at a premium. Great detailed memories on your part. Mine are mostly hazier, though I met James Doohan, Jon Pertwee, and had a nice conversation with a fella from Blake's 7. I also made "eye contact" with Louise Jameson (Leela from Dr. Who) walking through a hotel corridor. Probably meant nothing, though I was pretty good looking years ago.

Thanks, @PASabreFan.  I was thinking about doing the same thing.  I'll start.

I was driving from Cleveland with a friend of mine to a science fiction convention in Niagara Falls.  I turned on WGR when I got in range.  At some point, Rick went nuts on a goal where someone made a great move.  She then looked at me and said, "who IS this guy?"  She became an RJ fan at that moment.

Alright, I was prepared to believe you until you said "she."

  10. I don't really want to start a separate thread. I thought I remembered one, but I don't see it now. Any chance we are going to be competitive for any of the undrafted players that have NHL potential coming out of the Frozen Four? Seems our cap space ought to give us the capacity to be players in the market if we choose to go that way.

    In his three seasons with us, he's had: 4.9 > 4.3 > 3.7.  There's a clear trend there.  And his yards before catch also dropped this season: 6.7 > 7.5 > 4.7, and his average depth of target went 8.0 > 7.8 > 5.6.

And one of Beane's first comments after the season was that he wanted players who can get yards after the catch, with the images of Hill's huge TD against us presumably on his mind.

I'd like to draft a WR early and find a way to bring in Juju. Still think Beasely can play in the league. It's not really fair to compare almost any wr to Hill with regards to YAC.

Why did buffalo cut Beasley? I wouldn't mind him

Some think he lost a step and there was some friction about his COVID antivax stance and twitter posts, though I don't know how much of that affected the locker room. My sense is he was well liked. Mostly I think it was a salary cap issue. Imo, he is still clutch.

I just hope that Portillo doesn't follow the Cal Petersen model where he stayed in school longer to sign a FA deal with the LA Kings. It worked out well for him.

Isn't it refreshing to be talking about players and positions that have an abundance of prospects who will be competing with one another? That certainly beats having a dearth of prospects in the system.

What has become apparent is that the goalie position has a high rate of injuries. Can't have too many!

UPL has shown glimpses that he can be a NHL goalie. What he has also shown is that he is prone to injuries since he was drafted by the team. If I had to make a bet on our eventual long term goalie my money is on Levi.

What's wrong with you, John C? Don't bring that bad juju here . . .

Did ppl not watch Allen lobbing passes to Gabe Davis wide open?

A tyreek hill can only be added if you cut Diggs, not enough money for both

No one is talking about signing a Tyreek Hill in FA. You can add a talented player early in the draft. We need speed players with YAC ability to make the offense more dangerous and give Allen more easy yards. Fine if you disagree.

No we literally do not. Josh Allen just played 2 pretty good football teams and basically did whatever he wanted on offense.

Mahomes has a much easier time generating offense because of Hill and Kelce. He can stress a defense without having to make the superman plays Allen has to make routine for similar success.

  16. Allen is the best qb in the league. Mahomes is obviously right there, but I believe Allen is better. The main advantage the Chiefs have is Hill and Kelce. Mahomes can act as a point guard, drop off a short pass to either of those and YAC turns it into a long gain or TD. In pressure situations, he has relatively easy plays that can kill the D. Allen has to run over a D in a lot of those crucial third and fourth downs. Knox disappeared in this game, but the arrow is still pointing up. Why wasn't Davis on the field and a priority for much of this season? We need to add elite playmakers, free agency and/or the draft. That is the way to match the Chiefs, because the rules are such that the offense is always going to be able to stress even a good D.

What's interesting is there was a poster here who lost his mind over passing on Mahomes. Ended up getting banned which is sad because Allen is in that Mahomes level imo.

There was a fella over at the Bills' side of this forum who left when Rosen was not selected. I like Allen better than Kermit, but biased. He's definitely in the same company, and we got Tre White, too.
