I think the versatility that Casey showed stepping in at 1C demonstrated that he's not the kind of player you trade away.  I can't think of a recent trade that the Sabres would regret more than they would if they traded Mitts.  He's arrived but center-wise he's clearly 3rd in the pecking order and will be paid accordingly.  I think he'll be particularly useful in the playoffs- a highly skilled guy who can play up and down the lineup with decent size and grit who can play anywhere you want in the forward ranks.  Why would anyone want to trade that away?

And he's Dahlin's best friend, you know, the Norris trophy candidate fella we want to sign to a long-term deal.

Two things and I'll get the blasphemy out of the way first: I'm not enthusiastic over Savoie.

The second thing, and really the important point for this thread, is that as much as I want to free up KO's roster slot, if you listened to those locker clean-out interviews each one of the players to a man talked about the culture, how comfortable they feel, how much they like coming to the rink. And between their remarks about KO, KO's remarks, and Meatball's remarks on KO, I am convinced that KO was like daddy/culture-czar in that room.

There is absolutely no dismissing how important it is to have that atmosphere in there and my impression is that it took not only Meatballs doing his thing, KA cleaning house of the locker room cancers, but also KO putting his foot down and showing the way.

Is that worth giving the guy a shot at a final season of a glorious playoff run for ~$2.5mil for the year? I think so. I think KO has more to teach these guys and he can help make sure there are no embers of locker rooms past. If we carry two goalies there's room for him on the roster and still add a solid player to the third line.

I've been hoping KO would retire. You sure as hell can't push him out the door, but you make a compelling case.

Why are you an outlier on Savoie?

That is substantially correct, regardless of who’s saying it. Or at least it was last season. Having a legit WR2 is (was) a huge issue for this team.

That said, I’d prefer to see them wait on that position until Round 2.

It feels like they’re gonna go defense in Round 1 — LB, safety, maybe even corner.

I absolutely hate that round 1 prediction at every level. Don't think any of the LBs merit pick 27. Cam Smith might be there. He'd be value, but I sure as hell don't want to go db in the first two years in a row. You can get a quality safety much later in the draft. If they go D early, I think it will be edge or DT. I can see Mazi Smith being someone they would consider unless Addison slips. I doubt it happens, but that is the one WR I think they take. I would go in a direction few will agree with and I doubt Beane sees it that way. I like Dalton Kincaid at TE in the first or trade up from 59 and get Darnell Washington in the second.

I almost always say you take a chance on a long term deal if you have any idea at all what type of player you have.

With that said, it is all about the money.  If hes wanting $10m per year, then you go bridge.

Flomoe's feeling pretty lonely in that poll. I'm sure he's glad for any consolatory words you have to offer.

Hoping they draft a D with that pick (well, actually, hoping they trade it and Olofsson for a D that is more on this team's current time line) but it doesn't sound like any D worth a 1st round pick will be available at that pick.  Would rather see another F taken there, if that is in fact the case, than see them reach.

Expect Adams will take the best available (again, provided he hasn't traded the pick).

Trading the pick for veteran D makes the most sense. Wonder how much it would cost to move up from 13 to grab Reinbacher?

    Lots of juicy stuff here.

Luke Tuch -  I guess they can wait another year and give up nothing?

Ryan Johnson - good riddance boy

Patrick Kane - I sure hope not, we do not need him and wouldn't he be a blocker?   Is he good for the room?

Tom Wilson - we would be a harder team to play against with Wilson, Greenway, and Tuch on wings.  Don't see this happening with Greenway on board.

Upie and Comrie - would love to hear more about who is coming then.  I doubt they both are cut.

Savoie in Buffalo - not a surprise

VO out of Buffalo - not a surprise, need to move him to help the defense

Overhaul defense - thank you KA

New coaches on Defense - thank you KA

I will believe it when I see it.

We're on the same page. Would not be unhappy to add Wilson. I hope they still try for it. Would be flummoxed by the addition of Kane.

I do not know how KA will handle the goaltending this off season.  He has the assets to bring in a 1B.   I/ don't think he should pile it all on Levi.

Comrie has a year left and UPL is still very young but the coaches have a good read on both.

You think UPL will be cut, clear waivers, and end up in Rochester.   Would he even want that?   Interesting.

I think you have to keep UPL or trade him. No way he clears waivers. Comrie might.

  7. Fella who I post about who is supposedly related to KA, I dunno, has been offering up a bunch of info today at that scurvy Hockeybuzz site.

Sabres like Luke Tuch. Thinks the cost to get him would be a 4th or low prospect.

Johnson changed his mind (maybe several times I infer) and is entitled with an exaggerated sense of his worth.

Thinks they are in on P. Kane (unfortunately.) I don't see the point of it, but this may be a Terry Pegula thing.

Tom Wilson was plan A at the trade deadline. Washington looked like a seller and pulled back. With Greenway on the roster, they might not revisit.

UPL and Comrie won't be back in Buffalo. (I'm burying the headline, but typing these out serially as I found them.)

Savoie will be in Buffalo, doubts VO will. They like Okposo and Z but too early to say what happens there.

Says defense is going to be overhauled and new coaches. Happy Birthday.

Could all be fan fiction, just sharing for whatever speculative worth one cares to give it.

Yes, but to be fair, JBot said there was a cultural problem as well (as did I and many Sabrespace members). I think his hands were more tied however as he had to appease Eichel. With the surgery/wanting out thing Pegula green lit Adams to ditch Jack. I wouldn't be surprised if one day JBot wrote a memoir (hypothetically) and said he wanted to get rid of Jack but couldn't. In any event we will never know because he's a working executive and these guys generally don't talk ill of anybody because they never know where they might work next and which players/coaches they might have.

So ya, Adams got to do  what needed doing and he got it done. Timing is everything in pro sports. Adams came into a great situation. Imagine how much harder it is for a guy like Briere. I'm really interested to see what he can do in Philly, because that team is a mess. Personally I think it's impossible to fix that team for at least 3-4 years of more suffering if not longer.

    How terribly sad!

    But can we?

I would only trade Ollie for something good….

Say Ollie and Comrie and a low pick for a true, big and strong and fierce stay-at-home D-man with character….

I think both Ollie and Comrie have value…. Comrie is still young and not bad and goal scoring is extremely hard to come by. Extremely hard. Ollie is also a character guy.
Thinking it through, If we were to trade him it probably is for his sake more than ours and the return won’t be that big similar to Asplund but not that low of course….

Summers coming, we have work to do…. We probably don’t get that #1 goalie….I hope we do though… And that we get really good.

We probably don’t get a #3 center either…. But that #4 D-man, a perfect fit guy, is a must. So is making Stillman the #7 D-man. He will stay play over 40 games as the 7th so that’s not too big of a demotion.

Middlestadt is a #3 center. We are flush with forward talent. VO is the most expendable piece with trade value so he should be used to help get that #4 D.

My biggest thing with JJ is that he doesn’t finish enough chances. I like him a lot but of the young guys I can see him being made available if Kulich and Savoie cement themselves over the next couple years as finishers. Not saying I want JJ gone at all. If he can find his scoring touch then look out. He and Quinn have tremendous chemistry together.

I like his goal scoring meme in the game day threads, so I am in favor of JJ.

Thrown in to a package deal might be a viable option. I could see that happening somewhere if KA is going to be really aggressive, but I do not think he will be. I think the general tone of the off season will be follow the plan and stay the course. Not my plan, but I don't think KA will change it.

Yes, I believe we had this conversation earlier. I expect he will be more aggressive, so I'll be disappointed if your scenario proves true.

I don't see it. You've listed 2 teams up there with a philosophy completely antithetical to what VO delivers. If Calgary fires Sutter maybe, but otherwise I can't see Trots or Sutter looking at VO and thinking ya, that's what we need a soft undersized lazy goal scorer.

maybe the Ducks or Chicago if they're done tanking and want a temp. while their prospects develop. I still don't see us getting much in return though. I could be wrong. If KA gets a 2nd or more I will give him a big thumbs up.

Well, that's too bad because VO would be a nice part to add into a package to go get Noah Hanifin. Still think the goal scoring thing has more value than you are allowing.

Teams need Potential and Cheap young players, Not Expense Vets who complain.

I would be keeping Krebs if we didn't draft 3 Centers last year. Two have earned BIG chances in Buffalo. Middlestat suddenly becoming a Center that can play TOP 6 has muddled things to. NOT sure Adams would trade him at 2.5 Million.

Really not about who Krebs is, about how talented Buffalo has become and deep Rochester and the Minors are. We were over staffed last year and brought two men in trade as Wingers, Jost and Greenway. There are three players ready to come up. Having hard time making lines without moving people. Sure would be nice having Girgenson back too.

Gonna give away Olofsson, 28 goals? will he have a good Return? You know Adams will not just give him away. When benched, always produces goals when he comes back. Do we win last two games without him? Tage was out, Olofsson produced.

Adams is going to take 28 goals over Krebs unless he gets value back.

    We SHALL see!

I see VO likely used as part of a package for a top 4 D.

That has changed, Tuch produces like Eichel, not the same talent but better leader.

Adams won that trade with 1st pick too.

Krebs still develop in Rochester, no

Gonna get beat out in camp or Savoie and Kulich are not the real deal, top 6 Centers/Wingers some day.

Keep Middlestat no room for Krebs.

Right now, he is good trade bait for potential. "JOST" no room 😂

Points for a clever pun. I think if the right trade offer comes up it could happen, but right now I wouldn't bet on it.

I don’t think Skinner’s career year has gotten the attention it deserves.

His +/- led the team and his 47 assists are tied for the 3rd most by a Sabre in the pAst decade. And those numbers aren’t mirages, he made plays and paid attention to defence like I never thought he could.

You can’t really call him the most improved player, but for me he was the most surprising.

Ive never been a fan of his game prior to this year, but the way he’s filled out the missing pieces and eliminated the selfishness is truly remarkable, especially at the point of his career.

This season he was truly a top-10 left wing.

Don't forget his contributions Between 2 Stalls.
