    Oh, boy!  Geekdom!

Actually, the multiverse model of Max Tegmark and Brian Greene is that it is theoretically possible that every possible outcome leads to its own reality.

For those who are interested, the levels of multiverse are:

    1. Our universe is extended to other copies with different Hubble Volumes.  A quick look-up says this comes from the assumption that the universe is uniform and isotropic in its properties.  In this case, imagine a large  volume with little bubble universes inside of it.

    2. Other universes exist with different physical constants (speed of light, Maxwell-Boltzman constant, the universal gravitational constant, etc.).  So an alternate reality has light travelling faster and you weigh less with the same mass.

    3. The many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics.  This takes the idea of randomness at the quantum level and says that the different universes above arise from the different variations of what this randomness does.  So in all realities, No Goal happens, but in some, Jay McKee never gets the staph infection and the Sabres win the Cup in 2006.

    4. What @pi2000 cited is called "the ultimate ensemble."  We then can go into the question of whether there are countably infinite or uncountably infinite universes.  (IMHO, if we have that every choice leads to a new reality, then the number has to be uncountably infinite by a Cantor diagonalisation argument.)

You probably know already, but Jorge Luis Borges has some interesting stories like The Garden of Forked Paths that entertain some of these ideas. I also recommend John Crowley's Great Work of Time which is included in his volume Novelty.

This is exactly like how I got railroaded by the board on the Ryan Johnson pick. It isn't about Ryan Johnson, it is about not maximizing your assests. Gibson as a dump in the Eichel trade, sure. Gibson as an important part of the projected 4 pieces with no Zegras or Drysdale in the mix... that's a major problem.

As my old Jesuit professor used to say, without Zegras or Drysdale, "No sale!"

I've avoided reading or thinking about any of the hockey threads here for a bit because of, you know, reasons.

I'm all in on this, frankly.  Cleanse this franchise with fire.  Perhaps the wish on a monkey's paw that was the tank will finally stop having its inevitable horrific consequences once Eichel, Samson, Risto and anything else not nailed down is as far away from Buffalo as possible.  There is no way anything will get worse, at any rate.   Sorry, sorry.... not going to provide such an obvious target to the Hockey Gods.  But still, trade absolutely everyone.

I hear your pain. As others have pointed out, it's going to be difficult to "win" an Eichel trade, for instance. And I like Samson's game; his recent success at C only enhances his value, but the contract going forward is an issue. If he wants out, he wants out. The situation appears to have become so toxic a wholesale change is likely and probably necessary, so I am going to hope for the best. What else can one do?

  4. Not sure where to put this. Fella at the Sabres Hockeybuzz blog (goes by TheSabresTaco -- seems a decent fella) posted this last night:

    Alrite.
So what I've got, and it goes against what I've posted I felt.
Jack to Calgary is almost locked in. Goes against Broads' friend who says LA, but lines up with the Mayor/Freidman.
Surgery talk is dead silent, just like Freidman/Dredger claimed.
Sam Reinhart is 100% gone. Doesn't want to return. I made him say 100%, he said 100%.
    Same with Risto.

Granato is 50/50. Adams wants to talk to Lane Lambert and Jeff Halpern.

I don't give a poop if I turn out to be wrong. My guy has been connected to the Sabres for many years. Throws stones if ya feel like it.

One more thing. I disagree with it, but he said expect to trade 1OA.

But you might land a girl when she realizes your box is much bigger on the inside.

Indeed, when the adventures of a Time Lord from Gallifrey began, it was thought a convenient device to instruct earth children about history. It quickly became evident that the real purpose was to defeat giant malevolent salt shakers and to pick up chicks.

That certainly should’ve been the plan and they tried to do this (but failed) with guys like Okposo and Skinner. They succeeded with guys like Kane and O’Reilly but got cheap and impatient.

Cheap and impatient is never going to land you the girl . . .

It makes zero sense to take power when you have 2 players that make up 90% of the offense and will be gone.

Well, supposedly you get something back when you trade a player. I think folks need to wait, but I certainly would not rule out Power at this point.

The Italian Don was being polite. The primary reason why the Don was successful is because that which Krueger espoused he did the opposite. The same foundation that Krueger misused and ingloriously failed with the successor properly used and succeeded with.

^^^^This. He probably doesn't tell his wife she looks fat in that dress, either.

There is more than one way to look at team dynamics. You can't have all that many high-end players. It's fair to ask the ones you have to lead the team to success. (And to be honest, success this season would have been taking a run at the playoffs.)

RK and goaltending was enough by itself to kill that.

He's been among their best players? Sure. Where has he led the team?

I understand it's not a sophisticated hockey argument. I won't blame any fan who never wants to see the three of them on a tandem bike with an extra seat again. The torture of all involved parties shouldn't continue.

If more folks on the team had Sam's character and talent, you'd have a successful team. You can't lead a bunch of predominantly low talent or undeveloped talent and some problem personalities to consistent winning. Surely you understand this . . .

  11. Hey, I just lurk, but I enjoy this board. Optimism is probably an irrational indulgence, nonetheless, if Reinhart can maintain and build on what he is doing at center now and you have a healthy Eichel, Reinhart and Cozens as your eventual top 3, that is potentially a strong center spine. Tage and Casey starting to look like real NHL players. Solidify goal and this team could make a real leap next year.

What is apparent that even if our preferred option A, B or even C player is not on the board when our turn comes up to go to the podium we will come away with a good player. After reading the link what struck me is the similarity of profile between Lundell and Jokiharju. Certainly, not from a position standpoint but from the standpoint of how smart and efficient they are and how they enhance the rest of the unit on the ice. From an eyeball view neither player is dazzling but from a cerebral and no frills style of play each is very effective i.e. substance over style.

Lundell is a solid pick, but he's like a Toyota Camry. Hoping Rossi falls.

  13. The latest version, apparently: Ristolainen, McCabe, Nylander for Hoffman, Huberdeau, Pysyk

Yes, perhaps the tweet of someone living in their parent's basement for all I know. Risto supposedly "liked" the tweet.

I'm mainly here to share rumors and talk about how cool bow ties are . . . digressions on time and metaphysics are also marginally acceptable.

That return is unlikely. You take it and run if actual, imo.

Welcome, Doctor. Where’d you park the TARDIS?

Well, I sometimes have trouble remembering that. If you happen to see a blue police box, just a common, nothing unusual about it, you see them every day, unobtrusive blue box about ten feet high, let me know.
