Does anyone have any thoughts on the new D combos:   Power-EJ, and Muel-Clifton?

It appeared to me that DG did not stick to the defensive pairs for long.

Side note:  Clifton is now +1.  I recall him being -7 when Clifton hate was gaining momentum.

According to Moneypuck, the Sabres played  ~8 minutes TOI (5v5) with different combinations.  Doesn’t seem different from what other teams do, especially with so many PP, And PKs which create scenarios for a change to a pairing on the next shift.  What I also found interesting was Clifton’s minutes/ TOI overall (19:32), and the fact that outside the top three pairings, the next two highest were Clifton with Dahlin, and Clifton and Power.  I took a giant bong hit of hopium last night that this kid becomes an asset moving forward rather than an excuse.

Youngest team in the league won't be winning all the time. Granato and Adams should be allowed A LOT of leeway to try and figure this thing out. Losing sucks, but overreacting and firing everyone, trading away great young players and taking on some expensive vets is not the answer, IMO, Just sit back, say, "It is what it is" and get use to more losing for the time being and let this cake bake.

Josh Allen can run.. he can't throw the ball for a damn right now. The problem is a QB needs to do both..

Yeah.. they get the 2 seed.. so what.  Success if winning a SB or even getting there for this team. No chance in hell they do it. PHI has lost a few games in a row because their defense or lack thereof has been exposed.

A win is a win.. but I wouldn't look at today's game and bet on the game next week.  The team is not good.  You say it yourself, it's ugly. Why insist I put lipstick on the pig?  It was an ugly win that does not inspire confidence against better opponents who can execute. I don't need to post after a loss.. what's the point?  There are a lot of fans who seem insistent that this team is better than they play.. not sure how that works... but like I said after last years season when everyone was so high on this team... "You ain't won $!@#, until you in !@#$."

I'd figure every Buffalo fan would know that by now.

Sure.. the 2 seed.. as I said above. They then do what? The Bills should have had 21 points in the first few minutes of the game. They are inept and a GOOD team will beat them.

So much negativity, and misguided.  The mere fact they have the chance to be the two seed in the AFC suggests they are good.  Number 5 in points scored, 7th in Rush yards, 5th in rush TDs, 1st in sacks allowed.  And the Defense has similar rankings amongst the remainder of the league - 4th points allowed, 1st in takeaways 3rd fumbles, 5th in interceptions.  3rd in sacks, and 1st in Pass TD’s against.  All with significant games missed by contributors like D Jones, Matt Milano and T. White.

Is it how we thought they could gain a #2 seed in the AFC, probably not.  I didn’t anticipate losing to the Jets, New England, or Denver but such is life.

A second seed, if they can win Sunday gives them a winnable game in the first round, and a potential rematch against a very flawed Chiefs team, only this game in the confines of Orchard Park.  Something we have been waiting to see for 4 years.

And yes, Baltimore is superior, but it doesn’t mean the Bills can’t beat them.  They did last year, in Baltimore.

Start 2024 with a positive outlook on the Bills and send them all your positive energy.

Seeing online that the Bills clinch a playoff spot next week with either a win (which gets them the 2 seed), a Steelers loss, or a Jags loss; either of the latter 2 guaranteeing at worst the 7 seed.  But, if Indy and Houston tie, then the Bills would be the 7 in a worst case even if all 3 of those other games don't go their way.

A Bills tie would also clinch them the 6 seed.  (None of those other four 9-7 teams could get to 10-1/2 wins.)

Jags play the Titans, and Pitt playing a Baltimore squad that will rest numerous starters.  No one wants to see a Chubb-like injury in a meaningless game. Baltimore might sit half the starting line up.  Just win baby.  Plus, the thought of potentially hosting two playoff games is something I could not let myself think about 6 weeks ago.

JA exiting the mvp talk with this pathetic performance. Better wake up.

With this defensive performance he can be average, but what is his problem?  Did he go out last night?  The Pats defense is good but they have holes in the secondary. I would like to see Buffalo lay a beating on Belicheats last game in Buffalo with New England.   Josh-  Remove head from @$$, and take the opening drive 75.

  6. An homage to Columbus….

    Dearest Mother,

Having missed our last battle due to personal matters, and the men falling at the hands of the most hated New England regimen, it’s required for me to bring canon fire to this Army from Ohio.  We learned today that Brigadier General Granato will not be engaged in the fight.  In his place, Colonel Seth Appert will lead the resistance, joining us from his unit in Rochester.   As we prepare for a winter campaign that will take us through a gauntlet of dismay in the East, it’s most important to have a decisive victory at home.  My resolve is strong.

It’s not always which players, it’s sometimes when you roster specific players. It’s always been about finding the right mix at the right time: and we seem to be unbalanced again in a particular direction

No doubt.  But probably more than a coincidence that Evan plays for organizations like PIT, COL and FLA and seemingly develops his game.  Not trying to perpetuate the narrative that all players leave Buffalo and find success.  Evan is definitely playing bette post Sabres.  Did Bill Zito anticipate a first line LW when he signed Evan to a $3m AAV contract?  Where is the Sabres diamond in the ruff signing?  Or does it not exist because the coaches and structure contribute to extinguishing it?

  8. Florida beats the Rangers tonight following wins over Tampa and Las Vegas.  Could be the best in the East. Reinhart with two more tonight. Playing with Barkov is obviously the most important factor in his goal scoring.  Sasha with another primary assist….case in point.

The third player on that line?  Evan Rodrigues.

Seems like Sabremetrix just jumped in with some additional shade on Dahlin.

Again, the talent is there. The urgency isn't, especially coming out of his own end.

No doubt defensive lapses seem higher this year than last for Rasmus. Offensively the talent is never in question.  But that Sabre Metrix tweet should be shamed for using a plus/minus stat.  Not irrelevant but I trust my own observation that Power specifically has been fortunate that most of his turnovers or listless play in his own zone have not been converted. For me,  The regression of Power ranks higher than the regression of Dahlin.

Luke Hughes had more potential going into the draft but he was smaller and at the time slightly less developed. Few teams are going to draft a guy out of the consensus top three when they have the #1. Power should probably be fine. Or he’ll be Erik Johnson who was panned for years, moved to Colorado, and then was forgotten as a #1.

….until he signed in Buffalo, and all opposing announcers mention the Sabres have 3 #1 overall D men playing their team.  I myself was hoping more of EK than good trivia.

Yup. 2 million was nuts for a lesser version of what we already had. Philly got Hathaway for 2.3 as an example of what would have been better for us and what we needed.

It’s even more egregious when you look at the fact he signed KO and Zemgus to extensions at the same time.  It’s not like they had  Kyle or Z on the last year of a long term agreement, and you are stuck with a higher AAV on the 4th line.   He could have extricated himself from all three but did the opposite.  How many teams have forwards #10-13 making $8m.  Most are made up of jags or players like Krebs on an entry level contract of $750-$1.0m.  Agree, he should have pursued a UFA that could have pushed for third line minutes and if not, contributed on the fourth.  Domi, Suter, Sprong, Blueger to add a few more to the Hathaway idea.

  12.    Marty Biron (on Sabres Live) second guessing the decision to go with Jost on FL#1.  He mentioned Mitts as #1C, draw in Robinson and not Jost, for energy.  Robinson to play on 3/4. Curious on how Granato was hell bent on changing lines the first quarter + this year and last night, was the exact opposite. Almost like he had Jost playing center to avoid changing lines 2-4.  Couple this with Meatballs comments on WGR where he attributed the return of Quinn and Greenway to success against Toronto, allowing his 3rd line to dominate a third pairing defense for the opposition.  Really?  Is that how they will win games?  His logic is flawed and needs to go.  Understanding he probably lasts until they are eliminated early or spiral in January.

It's a Jagged Little Pill too.

Sung to the tune of All I Really Want, by Alanis Morissette.

    Verse 1]
    Do I stress you out?
My sweater has a Goathead and it’s Black and Red
    And you say, "How in-appropriate!"
I do wanna dissect everything today
I do mean to pick you apart, you see
    Because I can't take it

    [Pre-Chorus]
And there Im down three to nil before the first horn has gone off
Slap me with an untaped stick
And it would knock me to the floor if I wasn't there already
If only I could fire Matt Ellis.

    Chorus]

And all I really want is some Defense

A way to calm the angry voice
And all I really want is the playoffs
Ah, aao, aao, aao, aa, aah

    [Verse 2]
    Do I wear you out?
You must wonder why I'm winless  and all played out
I'm consumed by the thought of Next Season
    I'm like Perrault Forever
I like to watch it late and the write it out.

    I'm frustrated by Donny Meatballs.

    [Pre-Chorus]
And I am frightened by the corrupted ways of his Coach staff
If only I could meet PE-gula
And I am fascinated by the Buff-a-lo Sabres fan
I question his enduring loyalty yeah

    [Chorus]
And what I wouldn't give to find a Goalie
Someone else to save this puck
And what I wouldn't give to meet Zack Benson
Ah, aao, aao, aao, aa, aah

    [Bridge]
Enough about me, let's talk about you for a minute
Enough about you, let's talk about the power play a while
The structure, the personnel, and the telegraphic passing to Tage
    All around, all around

    [Verse 3]
Why are you so petrified of attendance
    Here, can you handle this?
Did you think about your schemes, your pinching, your back-checks.
Or when you think you're gonna lose
Or do you long for golf this offseason

    [Pre-Chorus]
And all I need now is intellectual intercourse
Something Rob Ray cannot provide me
And I have no concept of June other than I’m not playing
If only I could kill Dan Leavy.

    [Chorus]
And all I really want is some effort

A place to find a common ground

And all I really want is a win streak
Ah, aao, aao, aao, aa, aah
And all I really want is a Cup now
A way to raise it over my head
And all I really want is some justice
Ah, aao, aao, aao, aa, aah
