Based on his history, he'll play about 60 games for us next season.   I disagree with your characterization of Kulich, Kozak and even Malenstyn.  All 3 are solid defensively;  Kozak especially so.  The reason Kozak is even getting a shot in the NHL is because he plays 2 way hockey and does the dirty work teams need.  Kulich for a rookie in the NHL, has a very developed 2 way game.

    Agree to disagree.

This isn't really accurate any longer.  Zucker, Norris, Tuch, McLeod, Benson, Greenway, Kulich, Kozak and Malenstyn are all solid to excellent defensively.  TNT and Krebs are improved.  JJP is a work in progress, but is no longer a consistent liability.  The forwards' d awareness really isn't an issue any longer.

Now add that they were 10th in goals (only 2 goals behind the Leafs), 4th in 5 on 5 goals with 185 and 4th with 191 in all EV situations, the offense isn't the issue with this team, except the awful PP which is solvable with better coaching (IMHO).

This past season with had 6 forwards score 20 plus (TNT had 44 and Tuch 36).  We had 2 more score 15 (Quinn& Kulich) and 2 more score 10 (Krebs and Benson).  We have plenty of capable scoring forwards.  Benson and Kulich should continue to improve their scoring given their ages.

The issue with this team is the 287 GA (4th worst in the NHL) - Bad goaltending and incompetent defensemen.

Over the last 4 years the Sabres have allowed 287 (25th), 297 (26th), 243 (12th), 287 (29th).  Our 114 GA over the last 4 years is 7th worst in the NHL over that period while our 1031 GF is 13th best.

I repeat, the issues with this team are poor defensemen and goaltending.  When Anderson and Reimer are the 2 best goalies over the last 4 years it's easy to ID that problem.  Now add the revolving door of crap D besides Dahlin and that problem is also easy to identify.

Norris has played in 3 games so I won't count him as being anything until he actually suits up for us, Kulich/Malenstyn/Krebs/Kozak are hardly great defensively.

  3. Buffalos forward group seem to be skilled offensively but lack any defensive awareness especially in our own end of the ice. Also our situational awareness is terrible. We still lack players who go in front of the net or that battle hard along the boards, still lack players who can throw their bodies around or drop the gloves when called for and it’s been this way all throughout Adams tenure.

  4. My eyeballs tell me I watch the games in and games out guys just standing around while pucks are in the back of the net. How many times did we watch Power not take a man in front of the net or our whole defense just allowing guys to park right in front of our goaltender? That's not just a 1 player upgrade and goalie problem, thats a defensive system problem/ a toughness problem etc. imo.

  5. Thompson gets destroyed and not 1 single Sabres player came to his aid, Anyone who even comes close to Barkov almost dies on the ice by everyone. That must be such a nice feeling, maybe 1 day we'll experience that. I felt from the very begining of the playoffs that if the Stars beat the Avalanche they'd win the Stanley Cup and I feel even better about that plus Oettinger looks much better than the Colorado series.

Yeah Brady Tkachuk was the apple of many Sabres fans eye a year ago.  I think he’s cemented himself as their centerpiece and core player.  I doubt any package not involving Tage or Rasmus wouldn’t be good enough for him.

As far as who else is available, if I’m KA (I know bear with me here), I’d call every team asking about their grittiest most intense actually good hockey player under 30 and see if some semblance of a deal can get done with Byram/Power, Quinn, Rosen, 9 OA whatever it takes.

I don't even think it was a realistic option ever imo.

I don’t think we really have a choice. If they want to package Byram, Quinn and 9 OA for an actual top line player.  Make it happen. The Cozens trade happened.  We got better just by removing him from the team. The same could happen with that potential trade as well.

I’m trying to think of who this magical top forward is? The only guy I can think of is Elias Pettersson. I know Barzals/Dobsons names have come up but there is no clear indication that they’re actually available or that the Islanders are looking to rebuild. I know Brock Nelson was dealt but he was older and expensive so who knows.

So. Fix it. You have an idea? Sure. Fire everyone. Now what?

Hire the right people, Pegula lucked out with McDermott/Beane of the Bills and needs to find the same luck with the Sabres. Maybe poach up and comers from top notch organizations like the Golden Knights/Wild/Panthers etc., doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results is the definition of insanity is it not?

If you're looking at asset value, kevyn got more value here compared to keeping mittelstadt.  And his trade record actually is pretty decent, despite all of the doom and gloom in this fanbase.

His trade record is decent? How many times have we been to the playoffs in 5 years? Can't be that decent. I do like McLeod and Greenway but other than that I could live without Byram, I thought he was good with Dahlin but pretty average without him. The Josh Norris trade is looking shakey already as he was re-injured 3 games after we traded for him and was already injury prone before that.

The theory is the league did it as a make good for hosing them out of the ASG (which the team used access to as a renewal incentive BTW).

(Yes I know it's total nonsense).

    Gotta love those conspiracies.
