Let me go on record and say this is a bad signing. Malcolm seems like a fine person, but he is a terrible goalie. I'd have much rather seen a Louis Domingue or Andrew Hammond as UPL mentor/Backup in Rochester. At least I know if called upon they can handle NHL play. Malcolm's career NHL numbers are 3.10 and a .898 in 86 games and a 4.85 and .871 for us last year. Awful. Domingue's numbers are 3.04 and .905 in 142 NHL games.

I believe in the team. Like you, I'm looking for improvement from Krebs, Mitts, Cozens and even Tuch upfront plus an injection of additional offense from Quinn and JJP. I'm also excited to see what Power can do in his first year. All they really need is a little more veteran presence on the blueline and a goalie who can keep the goals against under 3. I don't think I'm asking alot and KA may deliver over the next week. Maybe! The failure to address the goaltending while others in a similar position did is troubling. The sad part is none of the things I want KA to do will disrupt the development of any good prospect. UPL isn’t ready to take the crease and we have no extra RHD defensive D men in the system young or old to fill the void. If these glaring issue are obvious to me, they should be obvious to KA and his staff. So far, I haven't seen any results to show that they prioritize those needs. (No getting turned down by Matt Murray was more about moving up in the draft than securing better goaltending.)

So what has KA accomplished so far? Basically nothing. The roster, except for the likely additions of Quinn and JJP at forward, is basically the same as we finished up with last season. He has brought back Vinnie, Anderson and Subban. Re-signed Bryson. He hasn’t upgraded the defense and if Subban makes team, the goaltending is actually worse. The next few days are huge for KA and this franchise. Does he get a starter in goal? Does he upgrade the right side of the defense? Are forward upgrades also possible like at 4C. As I watch KA sit on his hands so far as Ott and Det upgrade their teams and especially in net, I’m concerned that a team ready to compete is going to be sabotaged by a GM unwilling to take even a small risk.

We can forget potential trade targets Quick, Varlomov and Gibson Hill and Reimer in SJ are now the most likely trade targets Kuemper and Campbell are the top UFAs and we are probably looking at Edm and Wash for those two players That leaves Comrie, Samsonov, Rittich, Greiss and Jones as UFAs. Wow, I can smell the stench of next years goaltending from Atlanta. Can't wait to see Marvin Jones in net for Buffalo next season. That should go well.

With Vinnie's return we are at 14 forwards including Bjork, Quinn, JJP and VO. Currently the roster has 13 F (Vo not yet signed), 6 D (including Fitz) and 1 G for a total of 53.5 mill. 9 mill left to get to the floor.

Truthfully he is one of only 2 goalies I see that is reasonably available to us with upside. He has been improving nearly every year in the AHL and finally put together a solid NHL performance. In many way he is our best option. The other option with potential upside is Hill in SJ. I don't see KA paying 3+ for someone like Samsonov. Allen appears to be off the market.

Not if he does a Ville Husso and KA adds a stay at home defender or two. I think the offense will continue to improve with the team rolling 4 good lines similar to 2004/5. The caveat is holding teams to under 3 goals a game on average. If we become a + differential team we can compete for a playoff spot.
