The offseason so far - Are the Sabres better?
Thorny replied to GASabresIUFAN's topic in The Aud Club
Right along those lines, what gets underplayed often is for how many of these players it’s a CAREER, a job, a way to make money: they have a life to live, after. They have a life to live, now. They are rounded human beings like Kyrie Irving said: “do you think I walk around with a basketball?” far, far more players than people would care to admit pursue their career and work so hard and diligently and to your point smartly at it because they are GOOD at it, rather than because it’s their undying passion. They are far more similar to other career folk than some think that’s of course not everyone. And lots of actors love acting. And lots of pilots love being a pilot and lots of retail sales associates love being retail sales associates: but, you don’t have to take my word for it, countless numbers of players have spoken to the nature of this. Players aren’t routinely candid about this stuff in front of the media; they’ll get torched like Scottie scheffler a lot of fans can’t reckon with this, many people even around these parts: they aren’t amendable to the loyalty we show, as fans, they aren’t fans. They are professionals. Their primary concern is a career sometimes they just ask out because they think they have a good chance of a better career elsewhere. If you turn against them knowing what we know, and knowing they know more, and knowing that our prime interests aren’t the same…I mean there’s probably nothing I could say if it’s still being ignored -

This is why I always say: the players aren’t stupid. They understand as well as we do the overall situation - they aren’t blind to Pegula. We don’t draft a bunch of quitters - we bring them up in an environment where they are fully aware of the owner’s lack of commitment to winning. The players understand and are aware and can keenly perceive the lack of expectation, far more potently than we can. It’s why I always scoff at the reaction to those asking out. they know -

I actually just noticed the cancer reference. Dude, that’s neither here nor there an an awful comp to draw Seriously guy, reconfigurate a bit. Me saying you are wrong about a professional sports club you follow as a hobby to pass the time is not the same thing, good grief my man, good grief. It’s not life and death. The other, well it f*ckin is -

Dude why don’t you just block me? Not saying this in snark. Like, just for personally peace? You constantly constantly quote me taking issue with merely the macro issue of how it is I am a fan. How are you even a fan, Thorny. Regardless of the fact the forum is filled with evidence for 10 years explaining why if you cared to look - I’m not answerable to you. And I’m specifically not going to explain it to you right now because you’ve proven it won’t be worth my time as I’ve explained it to you before we are not the same. I talk about, and have posted before that I’m jealous you can be so relatively seemingly unaffected by the constant losing, how I truly wish that was me - you post questioning why I’m a fan at all, and on more than one occasion have told me to leave - don’t get me wrong: I’m not offended by it. I truly do not care what you think about my loyalty as a fan. But like I said, for your own piece of mind.. why don’t you follow my twitter and peruse my blue jays tweets? Would give anyone a pretty good preview of what I’m like when a team displays basic competence I’m sorry but wookie - if you can’t make the logical leap to think that maybe, like, JUST MAYBE MAYBE I am being honest when I say the historical ineptitude leads to historical disenfranchisement, I’m telling the truth? Is it that inconceivable I could be speaking honestly? That maybe, just MAYBE, if the team made the playoffs once it would be reflected in the way I post? I am frequently floored by the fact that logical leap can’t be made - the idea it can’t just be the team that makes me post this way. That I have to have some other agenda can’t you just, in the name of science, test your theory once? Like, just once see what my reaction is once we achieve something? -

Zero doubt in my mind Adams tells himself this every morning in the mirror The sabres are not normal. The ever present urge to claim their behaviour as normal is unhealthy imo Isn’t this exactly how they view it? Can you explain the appeal to me? Miracle, exactly - it’s an act of God they haven’t made it, right? I can’t see that not being their reasoning - - - you can’t claim “hope for the best” if you haven’t done everything in your power to put the situation in the best possible scenario for that to happen- which they never, ever do they aren’t Frodo Baggins, providence isn’t coming to push the Ring in the rest of the way because Frodo sold his soul to get it as far as he could - there’s no grace on the way. They haven’t earned it. They have not done the honest to goodness work to facilitate the farming ground for those surprises -

Good luck finding an objective scale to determine that - it’s a non-salient diversion from the actual issue. There is no one worst decision. absolutely a boom period for Xs on this website, I love it - I eagerly await mine on this post from Taro -

You are the closest anyone trying to dial down the issue to ONE moment is wrong - that’s not even close to having an understanding of the tank, of the issue that has plagued this team, and it’s what most misses the mark the central issue with the story of the historical ineptitude of the sabres is that there *CAN’T* have been one solitary issue or decision to make the team this bad, for this long. There is no definitive worst decision. There is no decision that comes *close*, close, to justifying the results we seen. There have been multitude of opportunities to turn the situation around, especially with such low expectations there is no one worst decision. It’s about the fact they continually appear capable of prioritizing anything but winning Closer again -
What part of historical ineptitude don’t people get? That’s the friggen oxymoron irony here, you say I endlessly belabour the Adams point and yet it NEVER HAS TAKEN HOLD yet lmao He is *historically* bad. i’m not using the words for emphasis. It’s embarrassing. We are catastrophically, unusually bad and when I say dudacek would make a better GM that’s not snark it’s a notion I hope gains traction If I had a nickel
-
How is it nonsense? Tone can be hard in writing but you frequently off the mark by a mile with me: it could be me - I don’t know. But that doesn’t mean it’s not off the mark I meant it literally. If Adams was actually building by the principles dudacek is outlining we’d be a playoff team i don’t think enough give credence to the idea that there can be viable reasons for something to work without those things ever having been the focal point, or even potentially something they were necessarily aware of and how is that a nonsense point? If they aren’t actually making the decisions FOR the right reasons what chance do we think they have of replication?? if Adams had the eye dudacek has, we wouldn’t be seeing such a lack of the types of moves dudacek outlined the benefits of

No, I don’t think so. I think these are reasonable and workable conclusions you draw by analyzing the players, because you have an apt and more importantly eager hockey mind. They aren’t looking at it in this way, not that deeply. jj wasn’t being moved until he asked to - it wasn’t a plan, they didn’t have a plan, here. They will count on Sammy because they counted on him years ago to the tune of a huge deal when he hadn’t even established as an NHLer yet. The dye was cast long long ago you know that! “Will Sammy be better cause JJ no longer…” yadda yadda - no. Im not saying that dismissively but factually (at least in terms of what I actually think is happening). They aren’t thinking that deep lol. They already loved Sammy. They’ll count on Sammy because Adams has tied his wagon to Sammy. He formulated that plan after JJ asked out? Or, he knew of it before hand but just wasn’t going to do anything about it? Doesn’t make sense. The calculation was that Adams liked Kesselring - we do know that from reputable in the knows. Once it became apparent JJ had to be his big (and only) trade chip, he used him to get Kesselring. Doan is simply bPA on someone’s list - and it’s not a list that was put together with team building consideration you’ll find a way to make it make sense because you should be the GM If Adams was actually using similar team building considerations we’d have made the playoffs, but then Adams couldn’t have been Adams, at all - - - Adams is ridiculously one track minded his “thing” this summer was rhd we even saw it at the draft. He’s a complete imbecile (general manager wise) - it’s not just something we say

Do the Sabres have the worst goaltending in the Eastern Conference?
Thorny replied to LGR4GM's topic in The Aud Club
I feel like it’s indisputable goaltending metrics improve with better defensive play because they’ll take less good shots and let in less goals. And good goalie play would increase D metrics as they’d be on the ice for less against I’m not sure there’s evidence to suggest we’ve improved anywhere, but yes, assuming improvement in one facet I think it bleeds into others this is functional in the shell game argument I always make. Issues can manifest in more than one way. I don’t think it’s guarantee our offence produces to the rate it was if our team D is more effective. Without proper outside supplementation it’s tended to yo-yo year over year The issues of youth and inexperience and lack of overall talent tent to pop up in different places when one hole is plugged maybe whack a mole is a better analogy. But same principle -
A) I’m as right as ever, frankly I’m more right than ever, can’t remember the last thing I missed, b) I think that’s what leads to the tone. Yokels like you disagreeing because you have a complex. You argue against Adams philosophies any time but unless it’s me on the other end. ive got your number have you been more right than wrong? Your predictions from last year are almost laughably bad, if that’s any indication 😬 Hey congrats on calling Tage tho

For the record, I understand you use “scoring” to just mean goals but it gets confusing and that’s why you get responses like that because in the nhl scoring refers to points https://www.quanthockey.com/nhl/seasons/nhl-players-stats.html It’s basically like saying Sidney Crosby was born in America what? He’s Canadian Ya that’s what I meant, he’s North American Goal scoring is goal scoring. The connotation for “scoring” in the nhl is points just like if you say “America” everyone knows what that means -
Agree and JJ does things like that on goals he doesn’t get the points for I just think all else being equal the guys with the higher point totals are the guys contributing most to offence when we traded Eichel you wouldn’t say “goals” would you? Well you probably would but it wouldn’t be very fair would it? You are sort of over complicating what I’m saying. I’m simply saying it makes more sense to look at points than goals. It’s not perfect but it’s closer
-
I know you made reference to “there’s more to it” but it’s an X for me because assist totals for me aren’t “more to it.” They are simply “it.” That’s raw offence. ”Goals scored that’s 34 in, 46 out. It’s not 20 or 30 the defence needs to make up, it’s 12. But it’s way more complicated than that. How will the moves affect the power play, the PK, line chemistry, line matchups, situational deployments, the forecheck, the backcheck, puck battles, rush offence, rush defence, exits and entries, the cycle game, getting to the net, blocking out, D zone structure, the room…?” This reads pretty firmly as “it’s 12 goals, for offence, and then other stuff” I just disagree. Assists deserve to be included with / attributed to raw offence. The “goals” we will need to replace. It’s not chemistry, or rush offence, or any of the stuff you mentioned it’s offence. The calculation doesn’t start at 34 in, 46 out. I don’t think it’s just an oversimplification - I think it’s an oversimplification to the extent of being functionally meaningless in terms of a discussion point

Yes he did ask for a trade before the injury. He asked for a trade in 2020 upon hearing of the Adams plan to long form rebuild in line with EEE -

Awful ordering. The McNabb trade worse than ROR is a farce and the Kane trade was far closer to a great big heap of nothingness than our very worst trade. The jets got nothing from it either. The build didn’t fail because we lost a 1st round pick they don’t even take issue with the players - their take away is it tried to “win too quickly.” After all we’ve seen, for that to be the takeaway is high comedy. Our issue has been the exact opposite
