  1. Yup. The kerning on a word processor's font takes care of the spacing after a period and before the next sentence. So y'all don't need no extra spacing.

Quick question: should SabreSpace have another s?

I've only got the radio, so it sounds a bit messy tonight with the exception of the Deslauriers-Legwand-Foligno line. But they scored with Reinhart at center, or was it just in the midst of a change?

  2. I'm procrastinating doing work… so… I'll take a stab at it.

It's true. With the exception of Stafford's breakout .839 ppg in 2010-2011, his best season is .625 points per game in 2011-2012. Sharp's worst season in that time is .632 points per game (in 2014-15). So -- you're exactly right. A good Stafford season is a down Sharp season.

Unofficially, since the start of the 07-08 season, using regular season only, including play on all teams:

Sharp has 453 points in 549 games (.823 pts per game).

Stafford has 314 points in 548 games (.573 ppg).

Stafford's best season is only a little better than Sharp's mean over those same eight seasons. Of course, in general, one of these guys is getting 2nd line minutes and powerplay time, and the other is getting 1st. For contrast, our #1 RW most of that time was Pominville, registering 481 points in 612 games (.786 points per game).

Idle hands look up numbers online.

  3. Hmmm I was thinking of an opener against MTL. Maybe he had more grit that I give him credit for!!

I remember two fights since the rookie year Drury/Neil mess -- and both were in either the season opener or the first week of the season. I recall being really disappointed that it felt like filling in a checkbox.

"Get in a fight early in the year to show that I'm tougher than people think after an offseason of speculating about my grit and leadership?"

    "Check."

Then for the rest of the season his physical presence disappeared. I thought Stafford was a good fit as a 2nd line winger for the team (as it was then constructed) and he didn't need to fight to prove his value. He needed to be physical in driving to the net and using his body to protect while he used pretty deft hands to chip in the garbage goals. In my wishful thinking, I want Fasching to be the guy that Stafford never quite got to be.

  4. Just mourning (slightly prematurely) the death of hockey in Glendale.

Definitely premature. But as a Seattlite, I'm hopeful.

I wish they wouldn't have given up the Native American/Southwest/peyote-trip-themed sweaters. They were fun and screamed expansion team. Now, they've got a more refined look... plus black armbands.

  5. As of post-draft, I'm keeping my expectations tempered for 2015-16. I'm just happy that we have a goal of winning in the present again and are not solely focused on the "Wins of the Future". It made for horrible entertainment.

So here's my expectation: we put a dent in that criminal -113 goal differential and get it to the respectable -25 to 0 range. There's still a ton of growth to take place before we're a legitimate contender and we lack defensive depth (until we sign Beauchemin or Martin).

Looking at last year's standings, -15 would put us in the upper 80s for total points. That's a huge improvement, but still drafting in the top 10.

  6. Admittedly, there are way too many threads going right now and I've only just gotten out of work to begin reading. Also, I'm sure someone with much more knowledge than me has a more accurate tally. But here's what I've got....

    Thomas Vanek was traded for:

    • G Robin Lehner (starter)
    • C David Legwand (3rd/4th line)
    • LW Matt Moulson (2nd line)
    • C Cody McCormick (4th line, enforcer)
    • D Josh Gorges (2nd pairing, 3rd pairing in a couple years, Alternate captain)
    • C Eric Cornel – still in CHL
    • D Brycen Martin – still in CHL
    • F Jack Nevins (AHL enforcer)
    • NY Islanders’ 2015 2nd round pick (to be selected tomorrow morning)
    • Montreal Canadiens’ 2016 7th round pick

Let's not talk about four 1st-round picks from Edmonton, at least for a little while.

  7. As someone who lives well away from western New York... at first when the online Buffalo News went to 10 articles/month limit I was worried I would lose some coverage. But after a couple months, I realized I really didn't need to read their articles. I did enjoy listening to Sullivan on the radio because I have a soft spot for a mix of slightly cranky-nostalgic.

However, I do think the every team should do an end of season presser just to do a good bookend to the season. It's like a company performance review. There is value is some self-reflection. But here is my caveat: only do it if there is a stable voice to provide the presser. I don't think we have the voice of the franchise right now. It could be president of operations, GM, or coach, depending on who is best suited for the job. It also needs to be a consistent voice of the entire leadership group.

But do we have that person? It definitely isn't Pegula (and shouldn't be; he's an owner). It isn't Black. And we don't have a coach.

Perhaps it should be Murray except I can't say he's a great spokesman (he may become a great GM, and he's wonderfully frank and I find him endearing) but I don't need him as a voice/face of the team if he isn't suitied for it. The other point is that Murray doesn't have anyone to work in concert with him. A GM and coach need to be on the same page, and the better spokesperson is the one to give the presser.

Packers fan aside: For example, at the close of every season coach McCarthy gives the presser. It's mostly lip service, but it fulfills the NFL obligations, covers the pulse of the team, and he  gives the prime directive for next season (for which he and the GM are on the same page). Then the team goes out and delivers on the directive (a couple years ago it was "we will run better" and they drafted Lacy, last year it was "we will be better on defense" -- they signed Peppers, did some personnel-shifting, and statistically the defense was much better). But that comes from GM/Coach on the same page.

Until we have a coach, and a specifically agreed-upon directive to which all leadership is headed, I don't need a presser. I know the directive for next season: "We'll draft the best player at #2 and we will improve."

  8. Keep in mind I just went down the roster, not all are playing. Most of them are in their lineups though.

    Vanek

    Pominville

    Stewart

    Leopold

    Ballard

    Gaustad

    Ott

    Pardy

    Stafford

    Myers

    Thorburn

    Byron

    Kassian

    Miller

    Mitchell

    Flynn

    MacArthur

    Boulton

    Neuvirth

    Halak

    Moore

    Ehrhoff

If the Kings had made it into the playoffs, there'd be enough for a full complement.of defencemen.

    Oddly enough, no #1 center.

  9.

That account is fantastic; thanks for sharing it. And it led me to this one:

    KimKierkegaardashian

    @KimKierkegaard

The philosophy of Søren Kierkegaard mashed with the tweets and observations of Kim Kardashian.

Yes, Nihilist Arby’s is a gem of the Interwebs. All the better because we’re all a fan of roast beef ‘n cheddars and horsey sauce. And we don’t care that horsey sauce is liquid death.

Thanks for seeing Nihilist Arbys and raising KimKierkegaardashian. This feed is fantastic.

For the record – I want us to complete this tank and guarante-Eichel.

But McEichel or not, I’ve seen a lot of things to be hopeful this season from the young guys. (In the midday game @SJ Reinhart expertly pinched a puck-carrier out along the boards. It wasn’t a hit; it wasn’t mean. Instead it was an effortless, perfect positioning play to rub someone out and get the puck back.) I saw several good moments in the Boston game. The future is a few years away, but it is bright.

I think the most disheartening part of this season is that I find myself not watching the entire team. I don’t care about 1/3 of the roster. I’m just watching the efforts and skills of a handful of individual players. I don’t think I’ve ever rooted for any of my sports teams’ individuals moreso than the team itself. It’s an odd disconnect.

And watching the Ducks-Kings game --- we could still have the Kings #2, #3, and #4 defensemen on our roster. It’s the age-old question of futures vs. now. Both approaches are entertaining, but only one is immediately gratifying. The optimistic side says: sports are supposed to be entertaining and nothing more. The nihilist side says: nothing more, like that roast beef sandwich.

And Ducks win. So much for our ex-defense.

  10. In a cosmic sense, we're all irrelevant.  And nothing matters.

So cheer up, everyone.  There's always that!

I can't say we looked good tonight. But we did look like a scrapping team and there were a glimpses of future skill and promise. I think it's games like this that we were hoping to have all season (pro-tankers or not). Risto pinching in the corner and sneaking up for a shot in 4-on-4. Schaller playing more physical. Ennis whirling and being patient with the puck. Winning battles and foot-races. Yet another goalie making key saves. Even CoHo broke up a cross-ice pass that if he'd corraled it could have been a 2-on-1.

It's the last national game (last one I'll see this season) and it's definitely been painful. But, we beat the Bruins -- so it's good. And I think we have a winning record on MSNBC this season -- which means we'll get another 8 games next year for those of us scattered across the continent.

If nothing else, the (re)building is fascinating. And hopefully the fun ramps up each year hereafter. So peace onward and let's go Buffalo!

  11. Don't be an idiot, Grigorenko sitting makes perfect sense. He has had one game since coming back, they don't want to lose him for the rest of the season to another injury.

Out of those 12 players atleast 6 will be back next year.

Edit: People dissing grigorenko just pisses me of to much :D

Also, Ennis is coming off his injury. Need someone available if Ennis tightens up in warm ups. Grigo can get in the lineup next game... And send down Varone or whomever else.

  12. Hope it's nothing serious and just a matter of dehydration after back-to-back game nights, being down from his demotion, too much exertion, etc.

(And if it isn't serious) I can't help but think this shouldn't have even had chance to happen because he should be in Florida instead.

Again, hope it's just a blip, and get well soon to Mr. Pysyk! There's a top-6 spot with his name on it.

  13. The Armia AND Lemieux as opposed to either/or feels like a high price now. But, it'll be fun to see a top line winger with some young centers (Reinhart and a center to be named later) in the next few years.

I'd say it's a little more disheartening to lose Lemieux because I believe in having a stockpile of gritty, high-energy, slightly-loose-screw players (who are likely to miss plenty of games because of their style) to make a playoff series miserable on the opponent. And -- who have the skill to net two-three timely goals in a round. Or was that just his dad?
