ESPN didn't* care about hockey because they didn't have the rights to games. Covering hockey was basically sending viewers to a competitor. It's lame but it's 100% true.

I think it's definitely a big chunk on the league but ESPN has known for months they had this event coming and they just decided to use NHL Network's graphics package and not add any flare to this AT ALL.

I do, this is the first on-air analysis I've gotten to hear of the deal. It’s not. If a team acquires a player’s UFA rights they are eligible to sign them to an 8 year deal. Even if the original team had to sign the deal (they don’t) there’s zero recapture risk because they did not benefit from the contract.

There would be no recapture because the signing team did not gain any salary cap benefit in the deal since they left before playing a second of the deal.
