Game discussion thread GDT: Flyers vs. Buffalo 1-20-2013 @ 12:30 PM ET

We're lucky the ref blew the whistle early. But the puck was not fully across the line even after the whistle was called -
My new years resolution was to finally try and understand NMR and the theory/physics of it. So far it is going pretty well I think; however, I am getting confused by relaxation, motion and the correlation time. So i understand that: The magnetic moment of each nucleus precesses around B0. The frequency of this precession is the Larmor frequency (ω0), which is equivalent to the resonance frequency of the nucleus and the energy difference between the two levels. Brownian motion of a magnetic moment generates random local field variation at a neighbor. The frequency dependence of Blocal can be found by FT. The Brownian motion-induced fluctuating field can be thought of as containing a range of frequencies, including the nucleus’ ω0 frequency Because the local field frequency can match the Larmor frequency, emission/absorption events can be stimulated that reestablish the Boltzmann equilibrium, allowing the spin energy to be detected as it is transferred to the molecular framework (the lattice) And i also understand that correlation time (τc) represents the time it takes for a molecule to reorient by 1 radian (this is also called tumbling time). Thus a shorter correlation time means the molecule is moving faster. But why does this generate a wide range of frequencies with relatively low amplitude, while slow motion generates a much more limited range of frequencies, but these have higher amplitude? And how does this explain the T1, T2 vs Tc graph (the one that has a straight like for T2 and a v-shaped line for T1)? And finally, one explanation (i think) for this was that basically dipole-dipole relaxation is short range and if tc is small, then the molecule is moving too fast to interact with neighboring molecules. However, I thought interactions were controlled by the frequency of the two molecules, not by proximity? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Sabres presser at noon today- Darcy extended

Haha Darcy is extended. ###### press conference if that is why it was called -

Well this is a boring press conference... -
Hecht is $1.25mil, Connolly is $4.75. Enough said I think
-
So Calgary could lose both their back-up goalies...lol. I would be shocked if Irving isn't picked up, 24 years old and a pretty decent set of stats - Toronto could use him. Apparently Carlyle really didn't like Connolly, so i guess they are hoping someone takes him off waivers, and if not, they just bury him. No buy out. (makes sense)
-
I don't get why Tim was waived? He has one year left, and if he is bought out they have to pay him his full salary and take the cap hit? Do they just really not want him playing for them?
-
He is in Quebec, you need to move him onto the Sabres. Annoyingly he is also only a 64

In case people haven't seen this: http://topshelfcookies.blogspot.co.uk/2008/03/hello-my-name-is-jochen-hecht.html

Who was it who didn't know old Mcdonald had a farm? Girgs?
-
All star or pro (don't really notice a difference between the two)
-
Does anyone know how to score in this game? My scores are always 2-1 or 1-0 (usually i have the lower number :( )

Devils don't want to lose another big name player http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=413686
-
By the sounds of it he is like Roy, talented but likes to party and isn't completely focused on hockey. I really don't want him on the team, i just don't see any room for him haha, perhaps bad choices of words :P - made me laugh though, good spot
-
Redden was screwed by NYR and was a classy guy throughout the process. I hope Det gives him a contract, I think he will be a decent bottom 2 guy on most teams. And he is clearly a good mentor (look at the Rags current blue line!). I could see the devils offering Gomez a contract. Both guys could be signed cheaply, as they are still earning the big bucks from their former teams

http://shop.nhl.com/product/index.jsp?productId=13286451 The NHL shop made a shirt to commemorate this event i think?

In other news - watching the beyond blue and gold series. Toronto said if Reilly wasn't there at 5, would we consider 5 and 35 for 12 and 21 - interesting trade idea. I also find it odd that teams talk about possible trades depending on how the night goes weeks before the draft - though it obviously makes sense
-
Giroux is now the Flyer's captain. Goodbye Chris.
-
Yup, I agree - huge fan of Pommers. Love his game and his calm attitude
-
I think his argument holds some water - i.e. the playoffs can turn a player who is respected for being very good into a player who is revered for being a 'superstar'. So a team does not need superstars to win the cup (as someone else suggested), they need very good players who will be referred to as stars once they win. However, it could be confusing causation with correlation. i.e. did the player become a superstar because he won the cup, or did he become a superstar over the course of the season and win the cup because he was a superstar. After all, it is widely accepted that stars win (unless they are from Dallas)
-
Zetterberg gets the C (as everyone knew he would). Damn I'm jealous of Detroit's captain list
-
Richards earnt his contract because of his playoff play - he is the gritty clutch leader you need in the playoffs - there is a reason he has made it to the finals a lot
-
True, but what had Zetterberg ever won before the Conn Smyth? But I think most would have called him a star before that season Doughty was also ranked 8th in the 2010-11 list and Kopitar 29th
-
Yeah, not sure they are superstars/play like superstars though - they are like Vanek, Myers and Pominville - very very good players, but not superstars. But that is slight nitpicking Kopitar was 10th and Quick was 16th (Unless you mean the list before, in which case K was 21ist and D was 23rd and our only player was Myers at 47th. Malkin was like 22nd, so that list seems a little dodge)
