  1. With the WC here and training camp around the corner, I'd like to get some optimism going here. So, simple title, simple thread. Have at it!

Myself? Besides being in the hunt, I'm looking forward to Ristolainen's development. This is the year he should take a huge step

    That and Jack potting 40

The Sabres taking my mind of the Buffoons at One Bills Drive.

  2. Happy Labor Day to all ...

While many of my pragmatic posts elevate the role of capital and free choice to co-equal with labor in our way of life, I don't lose sight that we're all laborers. No economic or political system means anything unless it advances the interests of human beings. Laborer is our first, necessary and most important role in these systems. Life is hard work and we're all laborers. Thank you all for THIS service.

    Konstantin Dmitrievich Levin

Shout out to all of us laboring on this day!!!!!!

  3. I agree that these generally reflect the consensus around here, although I might add a few tweaks:

Kulikov -- expected to be Risto's partner (and thus top-pairing); this feels like it's above his natural station. Regret in some quarters about giving up on Pysyk.

Lehner -- yes, a question mark, but most love the fire and are looking forward to seeing him play a full season without starting off hampered by injury.

    That's all I've got.

If Lehner can play a full season, he is easily a top 5 goaltender. I hope he does.
  4. Most of the big names have been traded and signed, and we have a pretty good idea of what every team will look like this fall. Mid-July might seem a bit early for this kind of thread, but WildCard did last year's around this time as well, so I'm going for it. I will be using and building on the format that he and Hoss have worked with the last couple of seasons. (And this is different from Tom Webster's, his was a prediction of the offseason)

Buffalo Sabres record (and placement in overall league standings): 45-29-8, for 98 points (11th overall)

    Eastern Conference Standings

    Atlantic Divsion:

1.) Tampa Bay Lightning (Best team in east for me, lineup looks ridiculous on paper)

2.) Florida Panthers (Lots of moves, but I do think their defense slightly improved and their kids are another year wiser)

    3.) Buffalo Sabres (PLAYOFFS BABY)

4.) Ottawa Senators (EK goes nuts, Phaneuf for a full year helps their second pair, Turris healthy all year)

5.) Montreal Canadiens (Price keeps them out of basement)

    6.) Boston Bruins (Enjoy, Vesey)

7.) Detroit Red Wings (They look very bad)

8.) Toronto Maple Teens Leafs (Enjoy, Babdick)

    Metropolitan Division:

1.) Washington Capitals (Still incredibly deep and skilled, perfect regular season team)

    2.) Pittsburgh Penguins (Sid)

3.) Philadelphia Flyers (I'm very high on Provorov)

4.) New York Islanders (WC) (JT, and Ladd isn't total trash just yet)

5.) Carolina Hurricanes (WC) (Love the way they play, Aho is great, too many good young defensemen, my sleeper pick for playoffs)

6.) Columbus Blue Jackets (They'll get there eventually, stud center away from having very nice future)

7.) New York Rangers (Will be one of the worst possession teams again, and Henrik is old now, and Tanner Glass)

8.) New Jersey Devils (Hall was a great addition, but they just need more firepower)

    Western Conference Standings

    Central Division

1.) Nashville Predators (adding full seasons of PK Subban and Ryan Johansen)

2.) Dallas Stars (Seguin and Benn    )

3.) Chicago Blackhawks (Kane, Panarin, Keith keep a team with mediocre centers afloat  )

4.) St. Louis Blues (WC) (Solid team, wouldn't surprise me if they win two rounds again)

5.) Winnipeg Jets (Bottom six and bottom pair are question marks, and they may finish lower if they keep inexplicably starting Pavelec)

    6.) Colorado Avalanche (Roy)

    7.) Minnesota Wild (Incredibly meh)

    Pacific Division

1.) San Jose Sharks (High risk pick, Joe could go the way of Marleau at any minute, could also see them missing playoffs)

2.) Calgary Flames (Elliot is a good goalie. Gaudreau is a god. Bennett and Monahan older, Brouwer and Frolik nice depth. Good top 3 defensemen.)

3.) Arizona Coyotes (My surprise Western team. Probably a stupid pick. Mobile defense, love the young forwards.)

4.) Los Angeles Kings (WC) (Kopitar, Carter, Doughty drag this cap-strapped, slow depth player team to a first round exit)

5.) Edmonton Oilers (McJesus scores 95 points, defense improves a lot, one year away from contending for division title)

6.) Anaheim Ducks (Older and slower, nice defense, I don't like Gibson much and the forwards honestly look pretty bad)

    7.) Vancouver Canucks (just awful)

Eastern Conference Finals: Tampa vs Pittsburgh

Western Conference Finals: Nashville vs St. Louis (yes, this can happen with my standings)

Stanley Cup Finals: Tampa defeats Nashville.

Conn Smythe: Nikita Kucherov (Victor Hedman comes close)

Rocket Richard Trophy: Ovechkin, until proven otherwise.

    Art Ross Trophy: Sidney Crosby

    Hart Trophy: Sidney Crosby

    Norris Trophy: PK Subban

    Vezina Trophy: Carey Price

    Jack Adams Trophy: Bill Peters

Calder Trophy: Sebastian Aho (Provorov and Puljujarvi are runners up)

Biggest name moved during the season: Ben Bishop

Number of Sabres in the All Star Game: 3 (Jack, ROR, Samson)

Sabre who is a pleasant surprise: Bailey makes the team and puts up 30 points

Sabre who is a big disappointment: Foligno loses a regular roster spot to Bailey

Biggest name to retire: Jarome Iginla

First coach fired: AV in New York.

Team with best standings improvement: Arizona Coyotes

Team with biggest fall in standings: New York Rangers or Anaheim Ducks

Feel free to not do the full division standings, I just had a lot of time and was enjoying myself.

DD said " 95 + points, and a playoff spot", I am going with that...... The Sabres are the only FO in Buffalo sports that I trust.

Sabres make it to playoffs, shock the league by winning in the 1st round then lose in 6 in the 2nd round. Lehner and Eichel do well in the playoffs but the biggest story is Sam Reinhart's play in the playoffs being incredible. With 13 points in 12 games including a hattrick in Game 6 of the 1st round to win the series.

What numbers should I play this week?

In a nutshell, game ticket prices will start in one of three tier levels, similar to what they have now. But then prices will rise or fall based on demand, similar to what happens on secondary market sites like StubHub.

So if you buy a $50 ticket, a guy buying the same game a week later could pay $60 or $40 depending on demand.

Anyone ever gets in a bind, you can PM me here and I sell my tickets for face value if I am not able to go. I have two seats in 304.

  6. According to the American Psychological Association:

""Intersex" was originally a medical term that was later embraced by some intersex persons. Many experts and persons with intersex conditions have recently recommended adopting the term "disorders of sex development" (DSD). They feel that this term is more accurate and less stigmatizing than the term intersex."

For those ignorant of the metamorphoses of the word 'hermaphrodite' to the word 'intersex', you can take solace in knowing your ignorance is likely to be short lived.

DSD emerges, until, of course, someone's offended by 'disorder', which will surely follow.

I thought intersex took part while sitting at a computer. This is really getting confusing.

The safe space thing goes too far because it teaches people that it's ok to feel like a victim about EVERYTHING--and that it's the speaker's fault if they feel like victim. If I hear the phrase "cancer in the dressing room," and it affects me, that's on me to deal with my own situation. It's not on the entire world to avoid a phrase we've been using for decades just because I lost someone important to cancer.

If a group of people tells me that they would prefer I not use the word "retard," "hermaphrodite," or whatever, because it's hurtful to the entire group, I think it's wise if I adapt and move on.

I don't have to do so, to be sure, but I do run the risk of being adjudged an ###### if I don't.

That is probably one of the more well thought out posts on this subject. Very nice.
  7. Why is 'hermaphrodite' considered offensive? Where do we draw the line? Is it considered ignorant if somebody can't keep up with the new label of the day?

This seems like it could be a decent discussion, if kept civil. I don't feel comfortable derailing the Olympics thread. Mods, feel free to move those posts over to here if you like.

This PC world makes me nauseous. That statement alone hurt my feelings, I am so confused
  8. /perspective

You are drastically undervaluing Okposo and drastically underestimating the level of interest he had around the league. It's like you *want* to believe we can't get big names. He was the TOP free agent, a solidly first line level scorer, and if we didn't pay him what we did, someone would have.

Okposo coming to Buffalo damn sure means more than Vesey not.

    After a few beers, sure.

I agree Thorny. I fell much better having a proven free agent in Okposo. Jimmy's loss.....

  9. I would have loved to have Vessey in blue and gold. Fact of the matter is, he is an unproven player that generated a lot of hype. Our team does not get any worse with him signing in NYC. We still have a lot of pieces that will make this team better waiting in the system.  GMTM did his due diligence in trying to add another piece, I applaud that.  I bet Chicago isn't crying about him not signing there.

We are fine, probably better off he didn't sign here.

  10. John Jaeckel from Chicago is reporting the below rumor, take it for whats it's worth, read it on HockeyBuzz.

I am hearing now from three sources (two in Chicago, one in Buffalo) that there is a strong possibility Jimmy Vesey will sign with the Hawks Monday or soon thereafter.

"Strong" as in more than just "they are on his list."

All that said, I am not hearing enough, or from the right source, to say it's a done deal.

I won't pretend to know much about Vesey's mindset or decision process or the "analytics" of his joining various teams.

I do know the "pitch" is: "you will get to play with Jonathan Toews and likely either Patrick Kane or Marian Hossa on your opposite wing, in an Original Six city, for what is one of the top 2-3 high profile teams in the league at present."

And with Vesey, the Blackhawks are the only team in he market for his services, other than Pittsburgh, who offer a realistic shot at a Cup this year.

If Vesey is thinking primarily about his second contract—which I have been told he is—versus just playing in his hometown or in the same organization as his brother, then that is a compelling argument.

Monday could be interesting. Like I said, sources saying it points to Chicago right now.

  11. I live in DC, so am a passive observer in this. But, you have my interest. What exactly can you find in NYC you can't find anywhere else? Are we talking people, architecture, climate, food, geography, drugs, healthcare, beer, fetishes, flights? Just point me in a general direction.

I lived in DC, and spent a lot of time in NYC. You can have them both. IMO, nothing beats BUFFALO.

  12. I swear the guy sat and watched me play NHL 15 be a gm mode for a while. Kane, bogo, O'Reilly, okposo are usually my first few moves. I love the guy, we think a like roster building wise. The only complaint I could have is the overpayment for lehner. But if he pans out its a solid move. His ZFG attitude puts the cherry on top.

I trust the Lehner pick, he watched him play enough. GMTM knew that his health would be a wild card.
  13. People need to stop bowing out when they turn. You aren't driving a semi. Stay tight to the yellow line and freaking turn.

People need instructions on how to wait in a line. Don't stand 10-15 feet behind the person in front of you aimlessly looking around leading others to question whether or not you are in said line. Stand 3-4 feet behind the person in front of you and at least pretend like you are staring at the menu/cashier.

For all you en-why-cee types, it's waiting in line. Not on-line. On line is where you watch porn and buy concert tickets.

Driving under the speed limit. What's with my WNY people?

Stopping on a merge? Merge with speed people, do not stop dead on the thruway to let people merge in.

Texting and driving, WTF stop it. You are holding up traffic, and endangering everyone around you.

People need to stop bowing out when they turn. You aren't driving a semi. Stay tight to the yellow line and freaking turn.

People standing in a single line when there are multiple cashiers. What are you doing? Make two lines people....
  14. GMTM said paraphrasing he could see Nylander on a line with Jack and Sam... hmmm... this year.

I definitely think if Vessey falls through Nylander is who he potentially sees as the winger for them.

I think the Sabres should take advantage of Nylander's AHL eligibility and put him there to develop to start the season. If he's playing great give him a call up, if he's playing well and there's an injury in the top 6 give him another call up. Otherwise let him play in the AHL and develop.

agree. We still have Ennis, I forgot about him.

  15. The Nylander comment is also interesting because Murray does indeed seem to have Jack and Sam penciled in together. Gotta believe he sees 2/3 of the top 6 set with O'Reilly - Okposo, Eichel - Reinhart, with Nylander likely moving in on the left side sooner than later. That leaves one spot, and maybe that'll be Vesey. Tons of options for fill-ins there as well, with Ennis, Kane, and Girgensons. Of course, lines are all subject to the Disco effect.

Forward is pretty locked up, so it's good to see his comment about potentially adding another D- man or 2.

I think Guhle, and Nelson are close to full time regulars. I was really impressed with Nelson last year.
