Well sorry but reality is far different from going out there and buying a goalie. No team in their right mind, regardless of need, is going to pay obscene assets for a goalie.

We can't just go, "hey Nashville, give us Saros for a 1st and UPL" and then force them to comply. They're going to look to gouge us due to our need at the position and ask for Savoie, UPL and a 1st and probably more.

There are 64 goaltenders in the NHL and more in the AHL. If you have ONE year of bottom 5 goaltending, in today's NHL where the position is like RBs in the NFL (ie league average is easy to get to and lots of JAGs do it every year) then you CANNOT have 2 years of it. You seem to be fine with infinite, perpetual bad goaltending for literally no reason. Enjoy I guess.

Team has 18 year olds on it with a ton of guys under 21.  Expecting a team that young to be a playoff contender might be a bit unrealistic.  Since we have gone full on youth, it takes a while to season them and learn the game at this level.  And we have 3-5 more young prospects to add the next few years.  It could be years of this.

It's not that I expect this current group to be a playoff contender, it's that with absolute floor, bare-minimum general managing, last April's group could have trivially been turned into a playoff contender. And we didn't even get that, so we are hoping on several long odds that are showing no trace of even being possible right now.

Frankly the only year he could of was 3/4 years ago. The last two weren't exactly conducive for it based on the market available. All the good UFAs re-signed  with their former team such as Andersen, Raanta, and Varlymov and no goalie trades actually occurred this offseason despite massive rumors. When the only NHL goalie dealt is Casey DeSmith (with some old baggage) you know there's little to pick from.

    1.) No

2.) completely irrelevant. You either have good goaltending or you don't. if you don't, you need to get it as fast as possible, not shrug and say "the market!" So far our 3rd/4th  "answer" still has us under .900.

We’ve been season ticket holders for decades, so play that tune for someone else, but I can’t blame anyone for needing to wait and see before coming back and shelling out major bucks for a subpar product. Don’t blame them at all.

I jumped in and grabbed seasons in May/June assuming that they saw what we all saw last spring, and were ready to go all in with these guys. I am still floored at what Kevyn spent this offseason not doing. He was on the radio talking about how great it was that he actually got to get away from hockey in July. I'm not saying he shouldn't do that and enjoy it, but you have to actually do your job first for taking off to make sense ?

and yet, Philly shut him down totally tonight and shook him up a little as well. Very good player, yes. Superstar? Hmmm, not so sure.

but, but....Torts is a dinosaur out of step with modern hockey so that can't be possible can it?

Are super stars never allowed to be shut down? McDavid was absent from the Vancouver game (against pettersson), is mcdavid just very good?

Pettersson is a 100 point player lmao

And this couldn't have anything to do with our teams play? Some of you come into this looking to find something to be negative about.

Exactly. Tampa wasn't walking into the slot and then shattering the glass. They weren't getting clean looks and were taking shots of frustration after having the puck awhile and bring stuck on the perimeter. I've never seen Kucherov have so little run from his spot on the half wall at ES or on the PP. we just knew how to play them.

Guys, the Tampa Bay lightning know how to hit the net lol. The Sabres played good defense. Let it flow over you

The amount of finger-pointing at “bad defence” in this thread is baffling to me.

They allowed 23 shots and 2 goals in 62 minutes of hockey, including 5 Tampa power plays, against a team that has the 8th-best offence in the league last year.

Even both Tampa goals were on shifts where they weren't getting a sniff of a high danger area the whole time, until the puck suddenly squeaked out. It was honestly the best defensive effort I've seen from these guys since Winnipeg last year (which was really more of a game where the Sabres just never left the offensive zone)

Tampa zone time was high but I only had my heart jump 3 or 4 times all night

  8. Boy, I let the guys I split seasons with talk me into moving down behind the sabres-shoot-twice net, towards one corner. Not letting them do that again next year. When the action is in front of us it looks awesome, but we couldn't see a thing at the other end of the ice. Frustrating. 300s>>>>>>>>>>>

It honestly made it hard to do a lot of evaluating, I didn't see anyone stand out in a super positive or negative way, maybe that's just the way the game went. Collectively, the TEAM played a solid game, even if you'd want them to have the puck a bit more in the 3rd.

Not much of a crowd, and the energy was preseason level. I don't blame them (us), I was exhausted, Tuesday is a rough day to have these things. Still had a lot of fun.

I know Tampa doesn't have the roster they had a few years ago, but they're still incredibly dangerous, and I'm impressed with how they played team defense to mostly shut that down. I haven't seen a Sabres game look like that since Miller was behind the last competent veteran team he had here. It was the exact type of game I hope to see 30 times this winter (the other 20 good ones can be offensive explosions, but that's not going to happen every night).

Tampa knows who your 18 year olds are. Seems like they made a point to make it hard on Benson.

Levi did exactly what he had to do. Couldn't tell you a thing about the tying goal (or Cozens' goal), I couldn't see either of them.

    Go Sabres!

Oh, and Greenway, Johnson, and the PK are making @dudacek smug right now. Good stuff from all of them
