I'm not even talking about making a difference in that way. I'm talking about engaging with these issues and really challenging the thought constructs that many of us have grown up with. I never thought I was racist or sexist growing up. I knew that I wasn't racist or sexist. But I have terrible memories of racist remarks and sexist actions that were all mine. It took a lot of people telling me to look in the mirror before I finally did.

Wildcard summed up white privilege pretty well. If I don't have to worry about it, it doesn't mean that I'm contributing to the problem!

The fact that it is just an "issue" or just a small aspect of the election is sickening. If it's not a big issue to someone, or if they don't believe it's a problem at all, that person is part of the problem. Being a sexist or racist isn't clear cut like it was in the 1800s. Not doing anything about it makes you complicit.

Right, and the fact that so many voters are unable to look past their own privilege is precisely why this is so frightening and disappointing. The fact that our country is still deeply mired in systemic racism and sexism, and that is NOT an issue for lots of voters is precisely what I'm worried about.

Social politics are a huge part of every election, especially when so many millions of Americans insist that we live in a post-sexism/racism society.

Millions of families don't have the privilege of schadenfreude the way you do. They just have fear and uncertainty about the future.
