  1. It's not just Canada. I want spring.

And why do gyms play the worst music imaginable?

That's why I always have my ipod...

Crappy morning - overnight road work on I-87 southbound towards Albany spilled into the early rush hour and caused huge backups. Then some person didn't check their blind spot and almost side-swiped me. Then I get into work and our server admins are arguing with me about how the network isn't configured right causing problems for users, combined with my mother calling me because her PC is having what seems to be significant problems. Oh yeah...that tool that sits next to me hasn't shut up all day long and decides to slam his fist on his desk multiple times because he couldn't figure out how to edit a spreadsheet. On top of all that, I have to come back into work an hour earlier than I thought because it fits the schedule better for our vendor's technician.

    :censored: :wallbash:

In the end, I didn't get into an accident...I solved the problem with my mother's PC...the server admin found a config error...my co-worker finally asked me about the spreadsheet thing, which I fixed for him...and I'll get extra comp time for the work I'm doing later. I guess dealing with the BS and getting my BP up worked out in the end.

    :flirt:

  2.

That does sound uncomfortable for sure, but look on the bright side and know that there are much, much worse places to be cathed. Unfortunately I know this from experience.

I totally get that. It was only 24 hours (actually, about 22 - they just wanted three meals and a night of sleep) and the whole time, I felt fortunate that I didn't have to do this all the time. We'll see what the results yield, but now that I'm done with it, I'm quite relieved.

  3. Pie day is no time to like cake.

Get it right...it's Pi Day. :P

I've had acid reflux for years and just recently started a cough that's probably because of it. The doc sent me to a gastroenterologist who did an endoscopy on me last month. That wasn't so bad because I was knocked out for it. But since it didn't show anything unusual, they had me do a manometry and I'm currently on a 24-hr pH monitor. Basically, the manometry is sticking a tube through your nose & down your throat and having you swallow liquids to check the esophagus muscles and measure any acid from the stomach. I gagged three times. At least the liquids were grape gatorade and banana-flavored jello. Yummy.

The 24-hr monitor is the same thing, except it's a smaller tube (about the size of a spaghetti noodle) that is taped to your nose and runs down the esophagus. Just knowing it's there has made me gag a few times and I feel like something is stuck in my throat that I can't swallow no matter how many times I do so. Since the tube is attached to a machine that records everything, I feel like I'm carrying an early 1990s mobile phone with me.

The only good part about all of this is that my boss went through the exact same stuff several years ago. He understands and is letting me work from home instead of taking a sick/vacation day. But I wouldn't wish this on anyone. It's borderline torture - even the wife has made fun of me a couple of times. I've got about 2 hours left of this thing...I've survived so far, but sleeping with this stuff was difficult and I'm doing all I can to stop the dogs from jumping on me.

  4. I honestly, truly do like my job, but I've pretty much reached the end of my rope with a co-worker. He's been with us for 13+ months, but was not only new to the data comm industry, but new to the IT industry as a whole when he started. He graduated from a local tech school where he supposedly learned the basics of networking, but has shown otherwise. For the past several months, he's continued to make mistakes and taken networks down that require others to clean up...including mistakes that he makes over & over again. About 2 months ago, the 4th member of our team left the company, so it's pretty much just me that's stuck with him.

Worse yet, his personality is that of a tool...he's loud, tries to be part of the conversations in the office, but usually says something stupid, and has virtually no common sense. He spends more time flirting with the females in the company (face-to-face and over email) than actually sitting down to read up on documentation and maybe learn something. And yes, in the 13 months he's been here, he has yet to show me that he can learn something about data networks. Not to mention, he doesn't try to figure something out on his own...he just wants the answer. Apparently, he's been handed things his entire life.

The last straw came when my boss asked me yesterday to take over a project that was clearly mishandled by this guy (as if I didn't already have 14 things on my plate). Luckily, I was able to clean things up within 24 hours and get everything done correctly. My boss understands and is trying to relieve us of this situation, but that's in a limbo state right now. It's simply wearing on my patience.

  5. Listening to the Boston media, I'm pretty sure the world is going to end tomorrow. I get to relax all day in my nice warm apartment. How exactly is that the end of the world?

You're assuming your power doesn't go out.

What I hate is when the forecasters call for such a storm and the grocery stores are MOBBED the day & night before...as if it's the day before Thanksgiving or Christmas. Almost every store in this area runs out of bread, milk, and beer the day before a predicted big storm. At least one meteorologist had the sense to tell everyone to relax and only go to the store if you're almost out of the essentials, but the media loves to scare everyone around here into thinking this is the beginning of the apocalypse.

  6. I know there are more pressing things in the world to be irked at, but my golfing "buddies" are not fun to play with anymore.

I went to play a practice round yesterday for a big 3-day tournament this coming weekend and two of the guys (one of which will be my partner this weekend) argued incessantly about their individual match and how much money was at stake. Literally, one guy kept changing the amounts because he was losing - he's also the type to critique your game after every shot you hit, so he won't shut the F up. This has gone on so long with these characters that I've done everything possible to avoid playing with either of them and I still can't get away from it.This took its toll so much on me and the 4th guy that we were speechless by the end of the round.

Golf is supposed to be my sanctuary where I can relax, enjoy the company, play well, have a beer or two on the course, and forget about everything else going on. I love the game and won't yet say that I'll stop playing it, but it's not fun when the knuckleheads I play with constantly whine at each other for the entire round.

  7. Tough news today...the significant other of one of my wife's co-workers died suddenly. We don't know what happened, but it's still pretty stunning. I met the guy a couple of times and he seemed like a really good guy. They weren't married, but had lived together for several years. They also have a teenage son.

The hard part on my wife is that she hasn't heard from her co-worker (who's also a friend) and still doesn't know how he died. Tough not knowing how she's doing, either.

  8. Bio, my thoughts and prayers also go out to you. It's something I don't wish on anyone.

    On less important matters...

The silly check engine light came on, then went off, then came on again - all this week.

The idiots in my golf league keep changing the rules and participants for our outing, so much so that one of the guys completely quit....though I can't say I'm far behind.

I like my job, but the office is open enough and my co-workers are loud enough that it was impossible to get any work done today.

    Mitt Romney.

  9. I've missed Complaint Thursdays. Since I've been at my new job for the past 6 months, I don't have much to complain about...until now.

We hired a new guy in January. Yes, I'm still a newbie here, too, but I have 15+ years experience in my field and he's on his 5th month now...plus he's about 10 years younger than me. His personality isn't exactly something to be desired - loud talker, says whatever is on his mind at whatever time, fails at trying to be cool, jokes around with everyone (instead of trying to learn) and just recently has started using a nickname for me that I don't particularly care for (side note: my boss uses that nickname for me, but he's known me for over 10 years, so I let it slide with him...plus he's the boss). It's not a vulgar name or anything, just an abbreviation of my first name ("And" instead of "Andy", for example). On top of this, he comes off with an arrogant attitude about some decisions I'm making at work - mostly it's sarcastic, but he keeps doing it. I'm helping to teach him some of the basics of data comm, but he's irritating the H out of me when he turns around and gives me these little shots just to pick on me.

Now, I'm all for having fun at work when it's warranted (I try not to be a complete stiff) and I've been pretty sarcastic at times, also (usually to other co-workers who I can have fun with and who know what they're doing when it comes to work). But when this guy keeps on going, it starts to get under my skin. I better calm myself a bit so I don't say something I regret.

  10. Just when I get my neck & upper back calmed down, I do something to pull a muscle in my mid-back. I see a sports chiropractor who uses kiniseo tape and now my back is taped from just below my neck to my lower back. I'm fine moving & walking around, but it gets uncomfortable if I sit or lay down for a while.

    And...it's not (quite) Friday yet.

  11. TWC = no agreement with the NFL Network(8 years running)

TWC = no agreeement with MSG(right in the middle of the hockey season)

    TWC = recent rate increase

    Yeah...TWC isn't the problem.

Don't forget how TWC is the ONLY major cable company to not carry NFLN on its standard package.

    TWC sucks.

  12. Son, we live in a world that has walls, and those walls have to be climbed over by men with guns. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Dennis the Menace? I have a greater responsibility than you could possibly fathom. You weep for chz and her girlfriends, and you curse Jerry Korab. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know. That chz's stalking, while tragic, probably saved lives. And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves lives. You don't want the truth because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me outside that window, you need me outside that window. We use words like peep, sneak, stalk and leer. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent stalking someone. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the watchful eye that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said thank you, and went on your way, Otherwise, I suggest you whip out your weapon, and stand a post. Either way, I don't give a damn what you think you are entitled to.

    :worthy:

I got nothin' this week. Yeah, I know...the planets have apparently aligned.

  13. Facebook spying...

You know how in the corner it suggests people you may know? When someone searches for you it will suggest them as a friend many times. I don't really care, except when it is obvious someone in the industry who I am not friends with is searching for info, and there is no other link that would lead them to my profile. There's enough poker playing in the world...I just want to be able to see my cousin's $8 halloween costume 1500 miles away, and not have to run counter-intel.

It's because of things like this that you need to watch your privacy settings on a weekly basis. Only my "friends" can see anything in my profile and I don't accept friends unless I've actually met or worked with or hung out with that person at least once.

  14. i've done that before. twice, actually. lined up a new gig, quit the old gig 2 fridays before the new gig starts, effectively giving me a 9-day weekend ... always a smart play, especially if your company is one that buys back your PTO bank. hell, i even got laid off once, and as an accidental severance package, the HR dept. cut us checks 3x what we had in our PTO bank. oops. :) of course, they called the next day and asked for the money back. that conversation went something like this:

"are you out of your mind? you just laid off 60% of the company, and now you're asking for the PTO check back?"

"yah ... sorry. it was a clerical error on our end."

"i don't care if it was a clerical, computer glitch, or whatever. you distributed the checks, then laid us all off. my wife and i had an emergency budget meeting last night. that money is already earmarked for at least 3 months of bills."

"but ... but ...... we need it back!"

"look ... am i in any way legally obligated to pay it back? cuz really, this is your f***-up--not mine."

*long pause as hr chick ponders her next response*

"well ... no, but it would be nice if you would."

"yah? well it would also be nice to still have a job. i believe you have your answer. see ya."

that was flat-out ballsy. the best part was that i hired on with a financial firm as a contractor and was making about 1.5 times what i had been making at my previous job. i actually made money on the lay-off.

    Well-played.

I got screwed by an IT contracting company once - they told me I had the job, I accepted, then gave my 2+ weeks' notice to my boss. A day (ONE SINGLE DAY) before my last day with the old company, the contractor called me to tell me I couldn't start the following Monday...because it hadn't even been f**kin' approved by the new place. I was out of work for over a month until they finally came through. Lucky for them, two other places were about to offer me a job, but didn't come through in time.

  15. do you have a new gig lined up?

Absolutely...wouldn't do it any other way. I start the new job a week from Monday. Right now, I'm using up time off that I won't get paid for, so it's a good week to get stuff done.

Wish the weather would cooperate so I could maybe play 18 or clean up the yard. There...that's my complaint.

  16. I finally got that job offer I was looking for an accepted it. Even better, I thought my boss was going to flip (because they rely on me too much around here), but she didn't. She acknowledged the crisis they'll be in, but admitted that she understood my reason for leaving.

Now, off to the pub.

  17. Good luck!!!

Thank you. Shortly after I posted this, I got the call with an offer. Logistics are similar to what I'm getting now (job duties, salary, benefits, commute, location), but I'd be leaving a state agency. Granted, I'd get the retirement benefits if I stuck around, but morale is down and given the instability of the union and its contract, I don't even know if I'd be able to stick around for that long, anyway.

Time to make another adult decision....

  18. Had to help with taking my mother to the ER last night. We get there a little after 8:30pm, leave just after 12:30am. It was just an infection in her foot, but she was in pretty bad pain trying to walk. At least that should be resolved, but I didn't get to bed until almost 2:00am, which might be causing this headache.

I'm also waiting for a call about a job I interviewed at last week. I was told I'd hear something early this week, but I haven't heard anything yet. Thus...anxiousness abounds.

  19. I wasn't going to complain after hearing about chz's Grandfather, but I can't let this one go...

I was in a meeting this afternoon with a vendor talking about the design for a major upgrade to our network. Myself, my colleague, my manager, and two high-up directors...the two directors were admiring each other's smart phones and talking loud enough so that I could hardly hear the vendor talking to us from across the table. REALLY???
