I'd rather put Rick up there with three other hockey announcers. There have been so many greats. To say Rick was the best is a bit over the top.

He stands among Foster Hewitt, Danny Gallivan, Mike Emrick and few others. I think of Pat Foley in Chicago, Mike Lange in Pittsburgh and Chuck Kaiton in Hartford/Carolina.

Also include the Voice of the Sabres - Ted Darling

I’m super sad about this, I thought Ted Darling couldn’t be replaced but RJ did it. We lost a great one, GD it.

Ted, RJ, and Van provided a substantial portion of the soundtrack of my youth. Van also did a great job with the Braves

  3. Very simply, a stated plan that makes sense given the state of the franchise when he took over. It was a joke. He decided he’d get players who wanted to be here. He did and there has been steady, incremental progress since. The progress has occurred both in the nhl and ahl.

I don’t agree with everything he’s done/not done, but he likely disagree with some of my professional decisions.

Does it have to be Sabres?

Bob Gainey in Pittsburgh when he was coaching the North Stars in '91.  I told him I thought he was doing a great job and wished him good luck the following season.  He asked me who the hell I was and so I told him.  Then he told me to F OFF - nice guy other than that.  It was in a downtown hotel lobby little shop.  He was buying Bic disposables.  I needed a train ticket to get to Carnegie.

    Tockett in Pittsburgh.

Mario was our neighbour in Pittsbugh before he built out in the sticks.  Mount Lebanon.  Nice pool.  We kinda crashed his cup party in '91.  Cup was in the deep end.  Everyone was giddy and plastered.  No one noticed us at all so we left.  Kind of boring really.

Ernie Whitt ran over my brothers foot.  The only one who I am confident will know of this dude is @Thorny

    Blue jays catcher???

If there is one thing the last decade + of wandering in the desert has shown me it’s, just watch to be entertained.  ***** the details.  ***** the tiny things. Was it a joy to watch?  The rest brings misery and stress.

Im back to watching like I was 13 again.

I hope this turns out like 1973 - tight playoff race against the Red Wings, which Sabres won and made playoffs in 3d season. "Thank you Sabres" as the Habs won the series

derstand the Canadian fans coming in, that is part of the market for Buffalo, always has been, and they are free to cheer for Canadian based teams if they wish too.

Pittsburgh, Boston, NYI, NYR, NJD is another story.   We need to get the season ticket base back up to help keep them ou

I agree wholeheartedly, but also understand why the season ticket base is currently too low. Simply fans speaking with their wallet. As an ex-pat all I can do is refuse to buy gear. I did until last summer - I believe in KA and current direction. I’m old enough to remember the lengthy STH waiting list. Fans will come back when they believe in the team.

I cannot muster an ounce of empathy or compassion for him.  The team gave him the space and time to work through his myriad psychological issues and he ripped them to shreds on his way out.  In the words of the late Al Smith, "See ya, Seymour."

Gotta chuckle at an Al Smith Sabres quote!

    Thaks for the memory

He plays very solidly defensively and covers up for mistakes by his defense partners and allows them to get more involved in the offense without having to worry about their defensive responsibilities not being taken care of if they do.

He is on a trajectory to have a Bill Hajt or even Mike Ramsey type career. That trajectory, even if he doesn't become a HOF player, is a very good one

I was not quite old enough to be at that game, but I definitely remember Schony as a Sabre and I do own a copy of this:

O, believe me, I have it. My wife saw it awhile ago, put it on, and wondered why in the hell I paid good money for it

When I saw the thread title, the first thing that I remembered was game 3 of the first round in 1979 when George Ferguson scored in OT to knock us out.  I was sitting at the right scoreboard in the Sabres end when Bob Sauve got beat.  It was my first taste of in-person Sabres playoff disappointment.

Those were different times, when making the playoffs was not only expected, but gauging how far our playoff run would last was part of the fun.

Same here - I was up in the oranges. IIRC the Pens hadn't moved to black & yellow yet, still light & dark blue with the cartoon skating emblem
