That’s a lot of talent for that draft slot. Unlikely that there was a more skilled offensive player available. Not likely to make it if he’s not in your top six.

You’re right, of course. But even with that, he is no worse than the 4th, and probably the 3rd most-hyped prospect taken by the Sabres in 35 years. We’re just numb and he’s dull. “Expected” and “pretty good” and “nice enough kid” don’t make for great conversation in our grey and dreary world.

You mean it’s based on the 7 U18 games and the 13 Swedish junior games, because the 22 SHL games wouldn’t have got him picked in the 1st round? I mean, I guess…? Because 40 games this year overall would have put him in more games than most prospects this year I think.

But Rosen wasn’t. Their type seems to be JJ Peterka pace (with upside), Jack Quinn upside (with pace) and highly coachable. Rosen seems all that. They took him over other players (Lucius for example) who may have been ranked higher, but weren’t all that.

I literally think they made the deal after NHL staff went home for the day and it won’t be processed until they start work this morning. Thing is, sample size was an issue for a lot of players this year. Stars took a kid 9 picks later who played nowhere else but that tourney. Does Bader watch players or just basically calculate their statistics? Low-scoring winger does not match his game at all, only his SHL numbers this year.

I will miss Risto, but I’m happy for him. Gave everything he had for this team and deserves a chance to play in a situation where he will be appreciated. The return was about what you’d expect for Risto if analytics had never been invented. Since analytics have been invented, this trade makes me wonder if analytics are what Twitter thinks they are. As well as I think Adams did on this trade, it makes the Sabres worse right now and chances are Risto will be the best player in it. I wonder who will have a better next three seasons: Robert Hagg or Will Borgen? Hagg isn’t even two years older, and has played respectable minutes in a similar role for the past 4 years. Hagg always struck me as a Dick Smehlik type - an OK stay-at-home defenceman who gets overused by his coach and over-hated by a vocal portion of his fan base. Hope Samuelsson makes him redundant, but I like him better than Irwin. It’s easy to overlook the 2nd-rounder, but it’s nice to have and we will appreciate it a lot more in a year or two, however it’s used.

Skilled, courageous and plays with pace. Seems to fit their profile. The 7 goals in 7 games at the World U18s - the highest level of hockey most of these guys got against their peers - impressed. Hope he fills out, but there’s clearly offensive potential.

Denisenko and/or Tippett are decent prospects with offence, but they don’t get me excited, or really seem to fit with the Sabres direction.

I’d be happy to pick up Levi as a secondary piece in the deal, but his value is probably close to Will Borgen. He and next year’s 1st is not the result of “a ton of interest” today in Sam.

I believe what is happening is the agents for Reinhart and Levi have confirmed their clients but the official trade has yet to be cleared and at least one other party has yet to be informed. I’m betting there’s another player involved, thus the delay. Levi and next year’s 1st could wait until the trade deadline. No need to make that deal today.

Levi was excellent for Canada in the WJC, but he is not an “A” prospect. Sam will get more than him and Florida’s 1st next year. 20 games of David Savard and Nick Foligno that.

I’m guessing. I can’t see a deal based around Tippett or Denisenko.
