  1. We do the same thing with police shootings and other topics. It just happened to be nFreeman jumping to conclusions this time. We are not wired to withhold judgement, especially when faced with new evidence that potentially affirms our previous conclusions. That's why researchers have to put so much effort into managing potential bias, because the human brain is naturally terrible at maintaining neutrality.
  2. The fact that he put a bullet in his own head indicated that it might not be terrorism related. Also that he was Iranian. Shia Iran is not really a huge Sunni ISIS breeding ground.
  3. I'm 5'10 and 140 pounds. Your brother wouldn't bounce me, he'd snap me in half. Also, I can confirm that handcuffing is standard practice for all criminal arrests, and the are ZFG about who's watching. It's a safety protocol.
  4. Wjag, the first two sentences and the last two sentences appear to be in tension. I propose that prosperity/poverty could be excluded from our definition of security, but included in a list of tools that would be useful in achieving security. Especially, as indicated by invoking the dangers to safety that an "underclass" creates, the equitable distribution of that prosperity.
  5. I think there could be a good debate about what "safer" and "security" mean, as political values. Is it freedom from violence in general? How does war factor in? What about poverty or disease? Is it measured in deaths? What about rape or assault? Then there is a follow on debate to be had: as a value in a presidential campaign what does "make the world safer" mean? Safer for Americans? Americans and our allies? All humans?
  6. Some notes on the shooting of Mr. Kinsey in North Miami: -In 2011 an officer from the North Miami Police Department Shot and Killed an autistic man who had found a toy gun and was playing with it in the street. They get no benefit of the doubt. They had a recent incident where an unarmed man with autism was killed by the police. This should have been the trigger to get every member of that department trained in ASD response and identification and aware of where the care centers for ASD adults were located. At this point, someone in that department needs to be held responsible. They have a relatively new Cheif, but their assistant Chief, Larry Juriga, has been in that position since 2010. I feel comfortable holding him personally responsible for this. - if you are firing to protect Mr. Kinsey, why the are you cuffing him for 20 minutes after he is shot. This entire thing reeks of that thin blue line that is destroying the profession of law enforcement in the United States.
  7. I suspect her VP pick indicates where she intends to head during the general. If you think a politician as seasoned as Clinton with a campaign as experienced as hers thinks the VP pick will be the difference between a win and a landslide, you need to have your academic credentials revoked ;-)
  8. Both candidates looked to their right for a running mate. In Secretary Clinton's case, I believe she is playing for the landslide. She could have looked left, female, and/or minority and secured the base, but she went with a moderate white guy. She wants to win 60-40
  9. That number from the link (Bureau of Labor Statistics U-6) has fallen steadily over President Obama's term and is in line with where it was in 1997 (hardly a low point for the US economy), and within a couple of percent of its all time low. I'm ok with going with either number, but since people are more familiar with the traditional number, it's important to put in some context.
  10. This is absolutely turning into something from my nightmares: http://www.miamiherald.com/news/local/crime/article91160077.html The cop did not mean to shoot Kinsey, he meant to shoot the man with autism. He meant to shot him because he wouldn't comply with orders and they thought Kinsey was in danger. You watch that video, because I have clear bias, can you tell from the video that this large man has no sense for what is going on around him? Can you hear Kinsey pleading his case? Can you here him clearly explain the entire situation? I'm gonna puke.
  11. Hoss, I've had at least one Chrysler product in my driveway for most of the last decade and a half. I've yet to be disappointed, and the jeeps seem to be some of their most well built cars.
  12. ATL brings and important perspective that varies both philosophically and regionally from most of this thread's participants. I think our discussion will have less value without him, especially his thoughts on the convention next week.
  13. I'm ok for 6. I'd like to vote now also on the possibility of making it a partial keeper league. If we want to do this, we should decide before the draft.
  14. Trump is absolutely right about NATO defense spending. Publicly suggesting that our commitment to the defense of Europe is in question due to this imbalance is a kind of crazy that only Vlad Putin could love.
  15. Everyday of my life I do exactly what this man was doing. Every day. Sometimes, I have to do this in a public place. My race likely naturally deescalates the situation with passers-by and police, but I have been arrested twice in the last 18 months because of the actions of my autistic son. Cuffed in front of my family and taken away in the back of a police cruiser to sit in a booking cell while I listen to cops insult my ability as a father and make fun of a disabled preschooler. Race makes these situations exponentially worse than I have experienced, but even without that factor there is a problem with cops on this country. A major issue that I don't fully understand yet, but one that needs to be addressed and makes me fear the "law and order" candidate even more.
  16. You can't use corporate resources for campaign activities. Themis speechwriter who works for the Trump Organization (his corporation) and not the campaign could become an issue. Only way out of it as I understand it, is to prove she was paid by the campaign, in advance.
  17. By Thursday, Mr. Trump is going to look like a calm, even keeled master of public policy. This is so f'n brilliant.
  18. Hamilton wanted senators elected for life. He wasn't afraid of federal power. The checks within the legislative function were put in place to assure the south that there was no way the strengthened federal government was going to outlaw slavery. "Limit the tyranny of the majority" what a great way to sell, "ensure slavery exists for 80 more years." And yes, everyone should read the federalist papers. Thats how you lead, by selling good legislation to the public. Not crafting legislation for what they want, convincing them of what they need.
  19. I read somewhere that if trump had invested his inheritance in an s&p500 index fund, it would be worth more today. Essentially, he didn't beat the market with his money, and would have been better off just letting it ride the market. So yeah, sometimes you stumble and bumble your way into a fortune. Footnote: http://fortune.com/2015/08/20/donald-trump-index-funds/ He missed the market by a lot.
  20. The trump campaign just got America to bash a woman all day and not talk about their candidate. They won twice.
  21. I just can't buy this, because he was human. How can you be "mighty" anything in private and not have it affect your decision making? I think he did come around in his second term, but it's a long road from card carrying Klansman to progressive civil rights pioneer. He didn't force the military to desegregate the front line military roles for two years after it was law in 1948. He finally did it in 1950 when he needed more troops in Korea. And even his most favorable biographers note his rampant antisemitism. I agree it was something he struggled with, and he didn't actively drive discrimination, but he was a product of the Jim Crow South. He couldn't be anything else. That said, it was his SCOTUS appointments that reverse plessy and rules for brown. Truman was complicated, but he would have to be superhuman for race to not play at least some role in his politics.
  22. Kurt got the numbers wrong in Dresden. By a wide margin.
  23. Drawing a circle around racism that only includes skin color could cause things to be missed. There were jobs for which my Irish forebearers could not apply. My polish grandfather would not eat Italian sausage when grandma couldn't find kielbasa in Rochester. Russians were other the same as the Japanese. Germans were not. It may not have affected the military options. But it affected the politics, and in a democracy like ours, all the military options are political. Submitted for your consideration: "I think one man is as good as another so long as he's honest and decent and not a or a ." ~ Harry S. Truman, in a letter to his wife. Censored are slurs for Blacks and East Asians.
  24. N'eo, are you attempting to claim that Americans were not actively racist against the Japanese? Or merely that this evident racism did not play a part in strategic decisions made by Roosevelt and Truman during the war?
