  1. I’ve heard it discussed in great detail — someone on the WGR hockey show a couple years ago (Mair?) — how unorthodox Eichel’s skating technique is — that he does multiple things just “wrong.”

That may play a role in these awkward falls.

    But I don’t think it’s laziness.

I'm not sure Jack gives a flip about what Adam Mair thinks of his skating technique.

  2. Better start doing some one leg bosu ball stands, various bosu ball exercises and some band work with the ankles...

He could use some strength down there

Do you not think he does all that stuff?  There's no amount of strength and conditioning that would have saved his leg on a play where he was braced for a hit, then a stick went under his right skate and the defender barreled into him right next to the boards.  Certainly not a dirty play, just an unfortunate accident.

  3. This team is too freaking slow and can't pass or clear their own zone.  Add Bailey, Baptiste, and Rodrigues to the mix.  Sit Okposo and any of these other slow overpaid guys.  At least put the slow guys with fast guys.  Spread out the slowness.

Remember when the Sabres were a fast and attacking team 10 years ago?

Watch any other team and you'll see clean breakouts, good passing, and speed all over the ice.

Apparently that's not thought to be a winning combination in Buffalo.

    I'm disgusted by this.

  4. Does anybody else yell at Jack when he doesn't skate or move his feet on the forecheck and backcheck?  Is he lazy?  Why doesn't he skate harder?  I guess old habits die hard.  I hope Phil shows him the film and gets him moving.

Please believe me, I don't hate him at all.  I love his skill, but he just doesn't skate hard at times when skating hard might make a difference.

    I drives me nuts.

  5. At one point last night, I said out loud with nobody listening, "I love what I'm seeing, they're playing just like Nashville did."

We had defensemen coming down the wall all night long and we had the Habs hemmed in a lot.  When is the last time you saw that?

They're playing an aggressive style and with 10 new players in the lineup, they'll need some time to gel (jell?).

    At least its watchable!

  6. Naps are the best.  It's like cheating the system.  It feels so good and you're NOT supposed to do it!  I try to get one every day after work.  When my wife comes home, the naps are over.  I've never seen such a small person make so much noise!  "If I can't take a nap then why should you?" she says.  Take a nap, woman, I'm not stopping you!!!

  7. "How can this still be a problem in year 2"

I'm sorry to tell ya, but Jack is probably going to be bad defensively his whole career, haha. At least mediocre.

Pat Kane is, I imagine Tyler Seguin still is as well. We're lucky to have Samson and ROR around to mitigate it.

That's fine.  I get it.  Keep him off the PK and end of periods when protecting the lead.  I don't want him blocking shots anyway.

  8. Has anyone noticed that when Jack and Samson play together, Jack takes the face-offs, but Samson plays the center position in the defensive zone?  If you haven't noticed, watch during the next game.  You'll see Samson down below the goal line, battling away while Jack floats around near the wing.

Now don't get me wrong - I love Jack Eichel and what he will do for the Sabres someday.  That being said, his defensive zone awareness is atrocious.  How can this still be a problem in year 2?

Watch him in the D Zone - he's lost and tentative.

I've been wanting to talk about this for a while, but after his horrendous giveaway that ended up in Chaput's goal last night at the END of a penalty kill, I had to mention it.

And WHY is he on the ice at the end of penalty kills and the end of periods when he is awful defensively?  Is this some way of getting him to learn?  I'd rather not have him learning during games that this team needs to win.  That's what practice is for.

    /rant off

  9. My observations from tonight:

    1. Nilsson plays much more under control than Lehner.  I'm never really nervous when he's in net.  With Lehner almost any shot taken has the ability to go in.

    2. Fedun should stay in the lineup.  Excellent puck mover.

    3. Reinhart is coming on strong.  It's beautiful.

    4. That was a COMPLETE game.  I think it's their best game so far this year.  The forecheck and backcheck were both very strong.

  10. Black Lives Matter.  They want to matter to me, and I hate seeing what our inner cities have become, but why don't they matter to African-Americans themselves?

This morning on my way to work, on a very busy Cleveland thoroughfare, there were two males duking it out right in the middle of the street, and several others running around in the street egging them or (or perhaps trying to stop them).

This is the example they choose to set and then they complain when we don't take their BLM movement seriously.  It's tiring.  Get off your aXX, get a job, take advantage of all the free training programs that are out there.

In short, improve your own life.  It's not my responsibility to do so, nor is it the governments.

    Your life.  Your problems.

  11. This makes no sense.

I was in the hospital 4 out of 5 nights last week for a chronic condition, and I streamed EVERY playoff game on my laptop.

The NBCSports LIve Extra feed was outstanding.  And it was FREE.

I'm not sure what there is to complain about.

  12. What is it about Kane that makes you believe he can't or won't grow, mature, and/or evolve as a player?

His continued lack of hockey sense.  Come out of the corner with the puck that he battled VERY hard to get and then tried to beat two guys to the slot only to lose it.  He does it time and again.  I love his hustle but when he gets the puck he routinely throws it away with a "Hope Play."  Very very frustrating because he could make better plays and keep Buffalo in possession of the puck, but instead he forces things.

  13. While I think he has a lot of tools, I'm tired of him making what I have come to call "Pee-Wee Plays."  His shots from anywhere only serve the puck right to the opponent.  His passing and playmaking is terrible and need improvement.

I'm glad he's a Sabre, because we don't have enough players with his speed and toughness, but he has to start using his linemates more.

  14. Pysyk and McCabe are nice players but they're not "elite" offensively (McCabe may have potential to get there). I'm thinking Roman Josi, Erik Karlsson, Drew Doughty, PK Subban, Brent Burns, etc. Guys who have the puck glued to their stick and can dangle through the zone and QB a power play. If we really want to win a Cup, I personally think we need another "elite" defenseman on our roster. Risto looks to be rapidly moving into that category, which is nice to see.

Despite the improvement in play, we're third from the bottom of the NHL and only 3 points out of dead last. We're looking at a top-5 draft pick once again.

Ah, Potato, now I see what you're getting at.  I understand.  Yes, Doughty or Karlsson would be great.  Too bad those guys don't grow on trees!

  15. From my point of view, we're dying for another defenseman who can lug the puck.  Most of the better teams have that when you dissect their rosters.  We need another to go with Risto.

We already have one, maybe two.  One is Mark Pysyk who is soon to return from a broken bone in his foot.  The other is Jake McCabe - he's growing into quite the excellent young defenseman who jumps into the play frequently and smartly.  Gorges, Weber, and Franson are not here long-term.  One of them sits when Pysyk comes back; probably Weber even though he's doing quite well in the +/- department this year.

  16. Allow me to thrill you.  I was in the Coast Guard for a few days less than 26 years.  It was my honor to serve America and I loved every minute of it.

Thanks for the kind thoughts, and I thank you for your son's service.  You must have raised him to do the right thing.  Thank you.

    Indulge me, please ...

I want to thank the service men and women in SabreSpace who've sacrificed and served our country. I'm grateful with all my being.

Additionally, please thank your family on my behalf. When mom or dad serves, the entire family serves. I've seen the sacrifice, myself. My son serves in the United States Navy and is often "underway" while his wife and children forge on against life's daily challenges back home. I am so proud ...

Thank you, SabreSpace Veterans. If you're so inclined, it would be thrilling to me to know who are.

  17. Best game the Sabres have played in 3 years.

Agreed. They started slowly but eventually they OUTWORKED the opponent.

I'm sorry to drop in without reading the posts. I will later. Promise.

I just want to say that, when Eichel got to that loose puck, I stood up off the couch, put hands to the head and bellowed "Noooo, he didn't!" (Like, in delighted disbelief.) Scared the crap out of the kids, some of whom were unsure whether 15 had done something wrong.

Then the goal. The kids hooted and hollered. I was still standing in the middle of the room, staring. In disbelief. One of the little ones asked, a little frightened?, "Are you okay?"

"I can't believe what I just saw. I can't believe that kid is a Sabre."

I really can't believe we have such a talented player on OUR Team.  This is wonderful.
