He had one year remaining as a RFA with arbitration rights.

My follow-up post mentioned it if Ottawa is making the decision to move him as either a core shake up or if the player wants out, the onus is on Ottawa to make the deal and weakens their position.

I also mentioned Cozens as one of the roster players. He has a lower PPG .61 to Brady’s .77, but he plays Center and is signed to longer term with a lower AAV.

Cozens, Kulich,  2024 1st- Top 5 protected and 2025 2nd would be one of the better offers given that’s three premium pieces.

This is closer to getting it done, but I think Ottawa would want Quinn or JJP instead of Kulich.

In any case though I don't think the Sabres should give up Cozens -- I'd rather they give up Power or TT.

Have the last few games not convinced you yet of what I've been saying for ages? Cozens is better as a winger.

    Give them Tage, not Cozens.

I don't necessarily agree on Cozens being better as a wing, but I agree that they need to keep him and that I'd rather give up TT than Cozens.  Also, if they give up TT and not Cozens, I think that reduces the rest of the price -- so maybe they could give up Kulich and not Quinn.

    TT, Kulich and 2024 #1 (top-3 protected).

OK.  We can't have a conversation if you just ignore what I say.

The Eichel trade, and the value Vegas gave up for him (and it sure seemed like they were the only serious bidder was not for "a 1C."  It was for a 1C with a major injury and contract risk.

Do you think if Eichel had been healthy, he would've yielded more in trade than what the Sabres got for him?

What would you need to get this deal done. I don't know, on the radio someone was saying Savoie, Mitts, and next years first.  If, IF that is what it would take to get the deal done....rather than just do that I would take that package to the rest of the league and take offers...Adams would basically say...Savoie, Mitts, and next years first...what is the best anyone has to offer?

Respectfully, there is zero possibility that Ottawa would accept this, or that anyone would give up anything remotely as good as Brady for this package.

Thompson, Savoie, Rosen and this year's first (cond. lottery protected). That enough?

Yes, although I think the protections would have to be pretty limited (e.g. top 3 or something like that).

Huberdeau was 29 and Weegar was 28 and both were one year away from UFA at the time of the trade.

Power is 22 signed for additional 7 years, and has more points in His Second Year than Weegar did.

Neither player is a good comparison at the present time.

If a player of Tkatchuk’s Caliber is available, the Sabres have the assets to make the deal and should be first in line.

A roster player (Tuch,Cozens, Mitts), prospect (Kulich, Savoie, Östlund)  and the 2024 First( Top Five Protected) and a 2025 2nd would probably be the ask.

Ottawa gave up 7th Overall and 12 th Overall in back to back drafts, lost a first round pick in 2024 or 25 or 26 as a punishment in the Dandanov Trade and their prospect pool is depleted. The Sabres Pick will  be enticing in a deal.

I think Matthew Tkachuk was also 1 year away from UFA -- that was why Calgary traded him, since they had just lost Gaudreau for nothing in UFA, and Tkachuk said he wouldn't sign an extension there.

Brady, OTOH, has 4 more years after this one to go on his contract.

I think Ottawa will demand more than your suggestion.  There is no way they will agree to Mitts being the best roster player coming back (and probably not Tuch either).  I agree on the prospect and the 2024 #1 though.

Zero possibility? Probably.    But look at what we accepted for two players that were better than Brady is now.  Why does everyone here make trade offers where we grossly overpay?

Again, though, the ROR trade had the bonus deadline and JB incompetence as value-depressing factors, while Eichel had the injury risk, plus he wanted a type of operation that had never been performed on a major sport athlete before, plus he had $50MM left on his contract.

    It's not apples to apples.

Tkachuk is a young, healthy borderline great player with size and intensity.  They aren't trading that for less than a king's ransom.

As in the ROR trade which was kind of funny or the Eichel trade? ROR trade would be a literal coup. The Eichel trade is likely more akin to what he's worth minus a hair since a 1C > 1W. Effectively I outright refuse to trade more for Tkachuk than we were sent for Eichel

Frankly I wouldn't trade Power for Tkachuk straight up much less add sweeteners to the pot.

Honestly I'd say Top 2 Defenseman are still harder to get and more valuable than Power Forwards if only due to their length of time needed to become a top defenseman as well how much longer they can fulfill that role.

Eichel's trade return was substantially discounted due to his injury, and ROR's was substantially discounted due to JB overplaying his hand and the $7.5MM bonus deadline.  None of those factors is present here.

You can stipulate that you're not trading more for Tkachuk than we got for Eichel, or that you're not trading Power for Tkachuk -- and you know what?  That just means you're not getting Tkachuk.

Frankly, I think the whole rumor is just NHL trade rumor BS, but if he is traded, it will be bloody expensive.

And let's be clear:  the Sabres are dying for guys like Tkachuk.  They would survive just fine without TT or Quinn or Benson or Power.

  5. 1 hour ago, Pimlach said:

Send them an ROR type offer.  Two vets on their downside, two picks and a prospect -  VO (Berglund), Okposo (Sobotka), Savoie or Rosen (Thompson), our #1 (protected), and next years #2, and we can throw in Comrie too.

Or an Eichel offer. Tuch, Krebs, a #1 and a #2.  Only replace Tuch with Savoie or Rose.

Huh?  I'm sure you know there is zero possibility that Ottawa would accept this offer.

    24 minutes ago, Pimlach said:

We hope you are right on Power.  The talent, vision and skill is there.  The size is there.  What is missing is physical strength, toughness, and willingness to use his body - all things a "stud anchor" on defense has to posses.

Brady is 6'4 and 225 and can score 30+ goals.  He is a force right now and getting a power forward that scores goals is just as hard to get as stud defenseman, maybe harder.

Brady is also a lunkhead.   He has been a minus player every season and he takes a lot of penalties.  He is building a reputation as a disturbance, at least in Ottawa.

I am not sure he fits into Buffalo but him for Power might be an pretty even trade.

Now this is more likely, although the Sabres would need to sweeten the pot.

Wow. That was satisfying to watch. I almost can't believe I watched this Sabres team gut out a win like that.

Have to admit I've been on the fence regarding UPL's comeuppance, and I was nervous in the shootout, but he stonewalled them.

Best players were Greenway, Dahlin, Clifton and, wait for it, KREBS.

I generally agree with this post, except for the usage of "comeuppance".

I would trade any player on the roster or in the pipeline for him.  Probably multiple.

It would take roster players to acquire a player of this ilk.  Power maybe?   I’d move him of Dahlin is a second for any Tkachuk.

This is it in a nutshell.  You're giving up the crown jewels if you want Brady, and it's at least 50/50 that the right move is to do so.

Who is the guy reporting maturity issues? An insider or some ham and egger fan on twitter?

Even if true he might be inmature for what they need as a captain but be fine as a guy in the room.

I know him and Dahlin became fast friends at the draft stuff and he and Mitts are buds.

I would be surprised if they moved him but even more surprised if it was in division.

What if they wanted Quinn (Ottawa junior) Peterka (buddies with Stutzle) and Levi?

This type of deal would have to hurt. He does bring a game the team could really use.

I think you are right that Ottawa would want something like your proposal, and that no matter what the final price is, it would hurt.

Rosen, Cozens, Kulich, and next years first.

There is no way Ottawa does this with Cozens being the only legit NHL roster player coming back.

It raises an interesting question as to whether I'd rather part with Cozens as opposed to, say, TT or Power or Quinn.

    9 hours ago, TageMVP said:

That's not bad at all. Some people will whine to keep Cozens, and they might be right, but that's not a terrible trade.

    How bout this

Mittlestadt for Tkatchuk. Straight up, old school style.

Ottawa wouldn't do this in a million years.  This is pretty close to Roy-for-Malkin redux.

Separately:  realistically, if the price didn't include Dahlin or TT, IMHO it would include at least 2 of:

    Cozens

    Quinn

    Tuch

    JJP

    Power

    PLUS one or 2 of

    Levi

    Mitts

    Benson

    Kulich

    Rosen

    Östlund

    2024 #1

    ...so it would hurt indeed.

I think the Sabres lack heart and intensity, so I think I'd be OK paying a high price for Brady, but I'd prefer to keep the guys we have already who have those qualities, i.e. Cozens, Tuch and Dahlin.

But I think I'd also rather see how the current group reacted to a real NHL coach before I made any major overhauls.

Still wish the title could be tweaked to something like Harrington thinks if DG is back it's likely he'll have new staff.

It was not meant to be reporting that DG will return.

While I agree that Harrington wasn't reporting that DG will return (which is why the thread title says "indicates" and not "says" or "reports"), I don't think the bolded is the correct interpretation either.

Harrington responded "Very high" to this question:  "What are the chances that meatball cleans house and brings in a news coaching team to assist him at seasons end?"

He didn't say:  "If DG is retained, he will probably bring in new assistants."

And the question he was asked wasn't:  "What are the chances that if DG is retained as coach, he cleans house and brings in a new staff?"

I think that if Harrington didn't think DG would be back, he would've said more than "very high" in response to the question he was asked.

Do you not think that Harrington thinks DG will be back?

  12. Good luck @Marvin.  I hope you avoid the grim reaper.  If not, I'm sure it won't be pleasant, but I will say that I know a number of very smart, very successful people who have been laid off.  Sometimes it's unavoidable, but it usually works out for the best.  Either way it sounds like you have very marketable skills.

Besides being intentionally hyperbolic, so as to really give this franchise a challenge in trying to live up to it, im not really saying they won’t/aren’t spending. My point was that the performance of their cap setup on paper is more important than its performance on the ice. It doesn’t need to be cheap, it just needs to look like value. That’s a big difference. It’s also how KA makes trades

I merely present the real-time reaction to those deals as evidence. The reaction to those big contracts, in large majority, wasn’t about the contracts being expensive, and that the players had a lot to live up to. Nope. They were praised for their value. They were heralded upon signing.

More important to whom?  Maybe to Sabrespace, but I highly doubt it matters to KA or TP.  That would be ridiculous and just another type of cheapskatedness, not to mention stupid -- "yes, we're spending a ton of money, but we look like we've made a bunch of really savvy deals, so it doesn't matter that the zillions of dollars we're spending aren't producing wins."

No one writing the checks would think like that.

Wanna call them incompetent?  It's sure hard to argue at this point.  But if you want to call them cheap or obsessed with getting a good deal at the expense of having a good team -- I can't agree.

    YMMV, of course.

  14. I do not believe that being economic and efficient is a priority for TP or KA.  I think that was the case during the uncertainties of the Covid era, but it is no longer the case.  I think the buildout of the front office and the fat contracts given to multiple young players indicate that the franchise is ready and willing to spend.

While I will not be a-tall surprised if DG is retained, I think that decision will not be based on cheapskatedness.  It will be based on (i) TP's desire not to look like a clown organization that keeps firing people and (ii) KA's belief in DG.

    Still a crappy outcome though.

It’s on DG for sure, but it’s also on the players.

They have a leadership void on the team, they are friends and a “good group” but no one to effectively lead the team all call out the bad play.  Could be that their  players are still too young?   Kyle tries, but he is not doing it enough. Z is a quiet guy.

    next captain:

Tuch is a good guy, but a person close to the team told me right away, his first year here, he is not a captain type.

Dahlin is harder on himself than anyone else.

Cozens maybe down the road, if they don’t ruin him.

As for DG, the team reflects his personality to some extent.   Teams tend to do that.

Bottom line is the best captains have to be both pricks and mentors to everyone equally.   That takes carrying a status that comes with experience and performance and being fearless.    Most younger players can’t pull it off.

I totally agree, and this is a roster construction flaw that KA is accountable for.

Still, I don't think DG is the right guy.

My reasoning? And I may be wrong but here goes.... The team was much better last year with the same head coach... What's different? Assistant coaches.

They are getting better goaltending if every nothing else would have been the same, they'd be a much better team. What's the difference? Production from the first line and cousins. All of them have had more injuries this year than last year. The power play, to me that is coaching but that's more the assistant coaches than the head coach who runs that.

Sure, it's a lot to go on, but I think DG as head coach but with a different assistant coaches and a healthier roster means this is a much better team.

Much of this is reasonable, but I can't get past, or forgive, the countless number of games this season in which they just came out in a coma.  Over and freaking over they were not mentally ready to play at the opening puck drop.  To me that's on DG.  But I appreciate your response and that YMMV.

If this is true then Pegula/Adams are even worse than I thought.

It's an interesting question as to whether better assistants would've made a difference this season.

I think a team's attitude and mentality usually reflects that of the head coach.

Probably a bit of both. Let’s say 3 or 4 teams call on Mitts with moderately good offers. Adams then decides to see if he can find something more appealing. By Seeing if a team offered a RHD who’d be a legit Top 4 and could complete a pair stylistically with Dahlin or Power.

He’d rather keep him in my opinion but there are greater needs and Mitts agent may want far more than we deem fit for him.

If Adams trades Mittelstadt for ANYTHING OTHER THAN a true #1 goalie (ain't happening; Adams believes in UPL & Levi down the road, so truly doubt he's looking to come up w/ a package for a true #1), a top 4 D that isn't out of place on the top pairing, or as part of a package for either a true top 6 C that won't be out of place as a 1C or a true top 6 C that gets Selke consideration then he is 100% full of excrement when he talks about how he's building this team.

He has to walk the talk.  And trading Mittelstadt for anything less than that would simply be moving legitimacy for this team out even further than next season.

It's not impossible, but it's fairly unlikely that a hockey trade like that is made in a deadline move.  No playoff team is going to part with a legit top-4 defenseman or top-2 center as they get ready for the stretch run.  So that leaves the lesser teams, like the Sabres, who are in roster construction mode.  Sometimes those teams make big moves at the deadline but more often it's during the summer.

Overall I'd rather keep Mitts and see how he and the rest of the team do under a real NHL coach next season.  Again though it depends on the return.
