So in his reader mailbag, veteran Athletic columnist Eric Duhatschek responded to a reader who wanted to know who was furthest ahead in their rebuild: Ottawa, Detroit or Buffalo.
He said its tight and he would bet on the team that best addressed its goaltending.
If you ask me to rank them in terms of the order that I’d choose their rosters (and based on the contracts that have been signed), I would go Buffalo, Ottawa, then Detroit.
And then he dropped this little nugget:
And I’m waiting anxiously to see who lands between the pipes in Buffalo because they are actively looking for help. If they could ever pry loose a veteran such as a Jonathan Quick to stabilize the back end, they’ll be getting closer.
That seems to be oddly specific and makes me wonder if he’s heard something.
The Kings just re-signed Petersen to a $5x3 year deal and he is the #1 moving forward. Quick is in the last year of a contract the Kings might like to move and the Sabres can easily absorb. He has no trade protection.
LA also seems like a team that could be interested in Ryan Johnson and/or Erik Portillo.
Duhatschek has buckets of credibility and connections, particularly out west, and doesn’t make his living with a constant stream of insider babble.
To me, this bears watching.
Johnson and Portillo for Quick and Faber. Who says no?

Bogo just made a great play with an assist.

TPegs won't authorize it either. It'd be fun though.
I think the Pegulas will spend to the cap. They just don’t want to waste money on bad UFA signings like Leino etc. MAF is exactly what we need.

I think he will try but MAF can go wherever he wants.
MAF won’t turn down 2 years 22 million

I think he will give a big money 2 year deal to MAF.

Gallant is a great coach. VGK were foolish for firing him. Rangers look very good and Shesterkin is amazing.

It’s all about the Goaltending!!! We need to fix that. Our forwards are fine and I’m OK with resigning Vinnie. If we have to trade VO to get a quality G that’s ok.

4-1 Canada after 2 periods.
Cozens-Dubois-Batherson just toy with the opposition when they are on the ice.
What channel is this on?

Husso is going to be a fascinating offseason case. He's got the 1-year wonder going against him and the St. Louis-UFA goalie recency bias (Jake Allen has been meh, Carter Hutton was a bomb).
I think you're right --- Husso is a prove-it bridge candidate and should be a potential Sabres target to still give UPL the backup role. I'd prefer MAF or Campbell myself, but Husso could be pretty neat if he can continue his growth.
I thought Husso was just OK tonight.

ROR nice play

JFC, someone please shoot me. Leah Hextall is the worst announcer I've ever heard. Her voice makes my skin crawl. And the bag that is her color guy sucks too. These two are worse than Edwards and Brickley. And it has nothing to do with her being a woman.... She just sucks, really bad!!!
I actually liked her. It takes getting used to a female voice.

Not at all with Kane, his time in Buffalo was done regardless.
It’s too bad he’s such a head case because he is a very talented physical power forward who scores. That is very tough to find. Great low risk signing for the Oilers.

Really don't want Oilers to win because of Kane.
Can't stand Laughs winning.
Minnesota owned St. Louis tonight. That one I enjoyed. Listening to Foligno mic'd up I miss him even more. Dumb dumb trade.
Kane is on his way to a Conn Smythe trophy if he keeps playing like he is. How painful would that be for us to have traded away 2 Conn Smythe winners.

We made a mistake letting Lazar go. Wish he was holding down a spot on our fourth line
He’s much better than Bjork

He's not officially available & might not actually be available.
People are speculating that w/ getting rid of the old coaching staff & their leaders getting long in the tooth that the Jets might be looking for a full rebuild. If they go full rebuild, maybe Hellebucyk becomes available for the right steep price.
I would offer Victor Oloffson for Hellybuck

There are two lottery slots. What do the Sabres do if they win the No 1 slot? What if they win the No 2 slot? How does it change KA’s off-season game plan? Are any of the prospects NHL ready? Is Wright the dynamic center the forward group needs? Would KA consider trading down a slot or two to add more draft capital or a player?
He would draft Wright with #1 slot and Nemec with #2 slot. No further discussion needed.
Sabres Officially Select #9, #16, and #28
