  1. Time to lay it out. I'm sold. After comments from Eichel and Vesey, and from what appears to be a very productive meeting, I really think he's signing w/ Buffalo now. Vesey wants numbers? Chemistry can help that. And most certainly a greater chance of having a high amount of ice time in Buffalo can lead to the numbers he has in mind. Let's face it. Vesey knows Eichel very well. On and off the ice. Eichel doesn't want to serve as a tool in this, but he indirectly is. They're getting play together this summer, and each are loving the chemistry they have. Just don't see Vesey passing on something he knows to be true. Other teams will say this, that and the other, but there will always be a sense of doubt in their words. Vesey is signing w/ Buffalo.

Nicely said.  Adding to the bolded: Eichel's comments and stance are wholesomely true. Eichel knows very well that there's a ton of pressure on Vesey.  Eichel knows that him adding any public pressure is not going to help.  Eichel is satisfied with having a passive role in helping his friend Jimmy, but knows that playing an active role is not necessary, helpful, or, well, friend-ly.

In my opinion, though, one thing about Jimmy Vesey having meeting(s) with Buffalo now is that he gets to mull over everything the Sabres have, for 5+ weeks before getting his other chances in free agency.  He may go to sleep one night over those 5 weeks thinking "yeah, Buffalo certainly would be great", and wake up the next morning saying, "you know what, let's just do this".

I guess what it boils down to is that, it is indeed worth the 3rd-round pick to be able to get Jimmy thinking Buffalo for an extra several weeks.  We don't really know all the details about what anyone's thinking, just like we don't know the details about how negotiations/wooing/etc. worked between the 'bres and Okposo, or Falk or any other UFA or RFA for that matter.

So I am in the camp of: Let's just chill and let it play out.

  2. Wow, good on you... I haven't dared to try anything like bouldering.  I don't think my upper body strength is up to par yet and I'm afraid I'd embarrass myself!

Theoretically, for beginner climbers, men usually have the upper-hand initially, because they can brute-force (a.k.a. "dude-climb") up routes using strength alone.  But, females actually learn proper technique, balance, etc. quicker because they can't typically rely on strength alone, at least from the outset.  Flexibility is also an important trait for climbing, and many times, females have the upper edge on this.

Although... For me (a dude), my flexibility (in addition to my +4" ape index) is actually quite good compared to most people, so I have improved pretty quickly since I got into climbing more earnestly last summer.

  3. For what it's worth.... I heard Howard (or Jeremy?) on WGR mentioned briefly this morning that he emailed an NHL player agent regarding the rumor on whether a team has a limit on bonuses they can dish out, and the agent said that there is no such thing.  A couple posters above seemed to agree with this statement as well, I think.

  4. I'm probably looking to sell a pair of tickets I got to the Lumineers on July 30th.

    Location: Ommegang Brewery near cooperstown.

Yeah, its 4 hours away for most of you, but factor in Cooperstown and Ommegang and I thought I'd mention it in case someone wants to plan a roadtrip

Yeah, I'm likely going to go to Ben Harper + Trombone Shorty at Ommegang on July 9.  Never been before.  Website makes it look like the brewery is NOT open for tours/tastings on concert days though :(

Also going to Weezer at CMAC tomorrow night.

Lynyrd Skynyrd is playing at Artpark again on a Tuesday in July.  I will probably try for that as well.

  5. How do they fill out their AHL club.   And will that team also play in Vegas?

This is the question I came here to ask.  They finally got their 30 AHL teams so that there is a 1:1 ratio with the NHL parent clubs.  I suppose they have a little while to figure out if they can get an extra AHL somewhere.  Teams come and go int he AHL somewhat regularly and swiftly, it seems.

  6. Hoping for a home game the weekend of Oct 28-30. If it's the Bruins that would be amazing.

You'll get a home game versus Florida Sat Oct 29 (1pm game, with Patriots* @ Bills Sunday Oct 30)

Only other "good" Sabres-Bills weekends are Friday Dec. 9 (home vs Caps, Bills host Steelers Sun Dec 11) and Friday Dec. 17 (home vs Isles, Bills host Browns Sun Dec 18)

Dumb conflict: Sabres @ Bruins during Bills' Monday Night Football game @ Seattle November 7.

Also: Sabres @ Oilers 7pm Sunday Oct 16 (Bills host 49ers that day)

Per http://sabres.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=886658, eleven Thursday home games, and nine Saturday home games.  Only six afternoon games this year (four Saturdays, one Sunday, and one on MLK Jr. Day)

  7. Thanks!

I love Rock Ventures and prefer top-roping, but it's just really expensive and I can't find any other friends who are willing to spend the moolah with me. Gotta have a belaying partner! So I've been at the sticky ol' barn. Bouldering hurts and I'm not very good at it, but I guess that's a sign to keep doing it...

Right after I posted this, a Buff friend told me about Niagara Climbing Center and was asking if there were good outdoor spots- I'll pass on your info! I'd love to try some real outdoor stuff sometime.

Yes, it sure is expensive..  I have found that most people at RV are friendly and willing to take in a new climber/belay partner, though!

The other good outdoor spots that are nearby are Blue Run Rocks (lead-climbing; straight south of Rochester, just into PA) and Little Falls (top-roping; just off the thruway, 20mi east of Utica).  Then you've got the famed Gunks further downstate, as well as a bunch of spots in the Adirondacks....

I wouldn't mind hearing about what you think of Niagara Climbing Center (especially compared to RV) if you ever make it out there.  Good luck!

  8. Any of you live in Buffalo and do rock climbing or bouldering?

I'm getting back into it here in Roc and wanna nail down some places when I move in a few months.

I am a member at RockVentures here in Rochester.  I'm more into top-roping, but I've certainly been bouldering at the dirty old barn at RIT a few times.

I don't know what the indoor situation is in Buffalo :/  I found Niagara Climbing Center online just now.  Silo City also was a thing that was supposed to happen in the past couple years, but I'm not sure it ever did.

For outdoor: Niagara Glen bouldering is just on the other side of the Lewiston border crossing into Ontario.  Lots of routes, nice little spot.  A series of boulders in the woods along the Niagara River.  It's the closest outdoor location to us here in Rochester (so even closer for you soon).  Mount Nemo and Rattlesnake Point are the two hot spots in southern Ontario that I'd look into (a little further than Niagara Glen, of course, but very close!)

I'll ask around and holla back if I find out anything else that could be helpful.

  9. Moulson is definitely one of the two required exposed players. The second will likely be somebody who is signed to an extension or a veteran they bring in on a two-year deal (there will be a lot of veterans who should be working on one-year deals that will get two this offseason just to be exposed in the expansion draft.

Yes, it will be fascinating to see how this impending expansion draft (and the potential for a second one a year or two after?) impacts both UFA and RFA deals during the offseason (both for the Sabres and the rest of the league).  I don't know enough to speculate whether certain teams might be in position to take advantage of the situation (or whether some teams might already be in a pickle).

Thanks for outlining/updating the expansion rule n'at in this thread!

  10. The Peguins key to success seems to be under performing stars which led to a coaching change, undrafted and low round picks who worked their ###### off and helped change the culture of the team and some timely trades which all worked out perfectly. Sheary, Rust, Kuhnackel and Murray all came from Wilkes-Barre with Sullivan albeit Murray much later in the season. Hagelin and Daley came via trade and brought speed to burn. Not sure GMs will be lining up to steal this blueprint.

In 2009... Bylsma stepped in from WBS to coach the Pens to the Cup, right?  Did they have key production from AHL call-ups or from trade acquisitions that year?  Their roster: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2009_Stanley_Cup_Finals#Pittsburgh_Penguins_2

  11. Remember that thread about wishing harm on players and everything being over the top so it should not be taken seriously?  Is this one of those times?  Because "I swear to God" seems to bring it a back to reality.

Or is this different?  Not being an ass... legitimately asking.. do you have reason to wish him harm due to his comments about Drury?

Also, remember when some dope (I think a Philly fan?) posted something physically threatening about Sidney Crosby in an online forum a couple years back?  I forget what the outcome was, and I can't seem to get a google search to find anything.

  12. I'm guessing a Cereal shoot looks something like pi2000's avatar.

I actually have a perfect photo I wanted to post of me -- in the same exact pose as pi's avatar, but I'm wearing a monkey costume from the Bloodhound Gang's Bad Touch music video.  But it would have been too much for y'all to handle.

  13. Don't tell me what I can't do!

Ha.  I'm truly no photographer, but I had to respond with this one.  Not a particularly artful shot, nor even clear enough for you to get a good view of my road bike...  But I thought it was clever enough to take the shot with my circa 2006 phone.  Taken last summer:

  14. You going to Wildwood this year, Cereal?

Of course!  Now that I am within driving distance (moved back to Rochester last year), I have no excuse to skip it.  Hitting the full gamut of northeast ultimate party tournaments this summer:  Poultry Days (finally!), Mars, Wildwood, Gender Blender (Toronto).  How about you?

  15. Cereal, have you ever done a triathlon before? I've done a couple sprint tri's back in my prime. My biggest advice is to train the swim! 20k on a bike and a 5k run are cake compared to half a mile in the water.

I have not.  My experience will be much the same as yours.  I will be far weakest at the swim.  Although I did the mile swim at Boy Scout summer camp a couple times (like 15 years ago)!

Actually, I did do a 500m swim + 5k run duathlon(?) a few years ago, and confirmed that my swimming skillz are lacking.

Have you guys done any trail races? There's one here, marillatrailrace.com, that is seven miles and 14 miles. Way above my pay grade right now, but the seven-miler is an eventual goal.

So, it seems like trail running would be harder than road running, right?  Well, it's actually much harder than you'd think (at least for me).  I'd probably expect my mile splits to be a minute or two slower on the trails compared to road.  However, I'm also super paranoid (more than most people, I think) about rolling an ankle, and injuring myself for other activities.

A solid pair of trail running shoes is also very worth it!

  16. You will find that there is no better way to learn about a city than on the saddle of a bicycle. It's also a great way to meet people; make sure you check out local cycling groups. Enjoy!

I would like to call your saddle of a bicycle, and raise you a pair of running shoes.  I agree with you, but you also see different stuff when running!  More on that later....

I go to Runners' Roost, but same idea. Running sneaker prices can be kind of daunting, so I try to shop at the end of the year when all the 2015 models get discounted to make room for the 2016s. Got a pair of $125 Brooks Adrenaline for only $75.

Perhaps just a heads-up here.... the last year's version of running shoes are on clearance now.... someone else mentioned the Asics Cumulus 17... well the new ones came out (the 18's), so I just stocked up on the 17's.

And I get to go ride a horse for the first time in five years tomorrow!

I rode a horse for the first time (since I was like, 8 years old) this past week!  Quads and groin were sore after, for sure.  I did actual cowboy stuff in Montana; my girlfriend and I went to visit/meet her family, it was great.  I helped move like 30 cattle, 2 miles to another pasture.  It was gorgeous out there.  I also did some great mountain biking, and a little hiking, canoeing, and fishing.  Oh, and beer drinking, of course.

Also, I successfully completed the Boston Marathon on April 18!  A 5.5-year project, completed at last.  I finally qualified with a 2:57 marathon last year.  The whole Boston Marathon weekend was such a great experience.  It's so weird for it to be over.

Now, on to more of a focus on ultimate (my true passion), rock climbing, biking (both road and mountain).  Probably will try a sprint triathlon or two later this summer as well, to see if I hook myself into that.

I really enjoy reading this thread and hearing about y'all's adventures and goals and whatnot!
