  1. I kinda forgot about Risto's contract... I thought we were all supposing that Risto (or any player without a pro contract) wouldn't risk playing in the World Cup?

Are there any other players doing this?  And why risk it?

Answered my own question, thanks to BRAWNDO's buffalo news link... Gaudreau and Trouba are among the other contract-less players in the WC:

Ristolainen is one of a handful of prominent players with a deal in the tournament. Like Team North America forward Johnny Gaudreau and defenseman Jacob Trouba, they're playing with insurance from the NHL and NHLPA. Ristolainen and agent Mike Liut, the former NHL goalie, are expected to be looking for a deal of 5-6 years. Ristolainen wrapped up his entry-level deal last season at the maximum cap hit of $925,000.

So, new question: How does insurance from the NHLPA work?  Any ideas?

  3. The point is not that he was a seventh round pick. The point is that his character is such that you can't rely on him,l, but the Bills do rely on him.

I think the Bills are satisfied with Mills starting at RT.  Adding Seantrel back in the mix is (or was (the past two weeks) and will be (in Week 5)) an added bonus.  Kouandjio's flashes of improvement during training camp help solidify some depth even without Seantrel.

My perception was that the Bills knew going into training camp that Seantrel was a complete wildcard, were satisfied with slotting Mills in at starting RT at that time.

  4. I decided to look it up... Boston will be Moore's TENTH NHL team!  Crazy.

Perhaps this could be placed in the ol' trivia thread, but... he will be the seventh NHL player to play for 10+ teams.  Five of the other six played for exactly 10.  One man holds the record of 12:

[Edit: none of the other six players played for Buffalo]

  5. From the Donate thread:

I was reading about the new card-instead-of-paper-tickets thing and was wondering how donating/selling tickets was going to work.

I'm just getting a handle on having a card instead of tickets. pfft

For what it's worth -- the Bills have done the card instead of paper tickets, too, now, for at least a few years.  However, I pay $4 total per season to get paper tickets (I have four season tickets) printed and mailed to me, rather than the card.

Perhaps the same can be done with the Sabres?

I would be curious if they would do that as an option, if any of you decides to try it.  I would call your agent and ask.

  6. Is anyone else going to this? I wouldn't mind meeting up with someone while I'm up there

I will be in Toronto (randomly) for the first semifinal, 9/24 at 7pm... [winner of CAN-USA-CZE-Europe] versus [2nd place of FIN-SWE-RUS-North America].  I might convince myself to attend, although I'm not really that excited about this World Cup thing, just yet.  If USA somehow wins their pool, that might convince me (cheaper tickets, too).

  7. When I lived in Pennsylvania and Virginia, I always liked seeing this sign along the thruway on my drive home.  Although, I found the photo on the world wide webz.

Side note: no matter how many times I make the drive, the section between the PA border and Buffalo is always so deceptively long and dull.

  8. Catching up on this thread....

USA's Galen Rupp took bronze in the men's marathon!  It was an absolute pleasure to watch.  Rupp is a 10k runner (silver in 2012, 5th this year) who very recently decided to try the 26.2.  In fact, yesterday was only his second marathon ever, aside from the US Olympic Qualifying 26.2 in January of this year!

Kenya's Kipchoge (gold) looked incredibly strong the whole way, and as he began to pull away ~18miles in, there was no doubt in my mind he would hang on.  Kipchoge and Ethiopia's Desisa (silver) are both very accomplished marathon runners, so it is not the least bit disappointing for Rupp to share the podium with those two.

Also, USA's Jared Ward also finished sixth, which is nearly as impressive as Rupp's triumph.  Ward surprised as USA's third qualifier (with Rupp and Meb Keflezighi) in January.  He is BYU professor of statistics who apparently wrote his Masters thesis on “Analyzing Split Times for Runners in the 2013 St. George Marathon”.  Very very cool.

It will be interesting to see if Rupp is still attached to the 10k for 2020, or if he sees his 10k window fading (29 years old) and turns his efforts fully to the 26.2 instead.  Another fun note - during each of the water/aid stations, Rupp would whip his white hat to the ground and acquire a new dry one.  Pretty crafty planning for fella who's only run one previous marathon!

  9. Hey Hope, maybe if you hadn't choked on those two goals you allowed the previous game perhaps you wouldn't have had to play Sweden this round.

They'd have won their pool either way.  I don't think a W versus Colombia would have affected their first-round opponent?

  10. Speaking of fringe and new sports- I'm really excited that competitive sport climbing will most likely be at Tokyo in 2020! aka bouldering. Watching those competitions is really cool- I love having it on while I work.

    Yeah, that'll be cool!

It looks like each athlete (20 men and 20 women total) would participate in three events:  sport climbing, bouldering, and speed climbing.  Overall scoring will be based on results from all three events.  I also see that speed climbing has a negative connotation among the climbing community.

    Edit:

    (for the uninitiated)

Sport climbing = Climber is harnessed, and clips rope into bolts as they ascend the wall

Bouldering = short, very difficult moves; no harness

Speed climbing = Top-roping (harnessed, already anchored from top of wall to start) up easier moves very quickly

  11. This is a good thing.  Jim Rome is just awful.  Every individual word he speaks is just abrasive and cocky, for no good reason.  I can't listen to it.

It sounds like Ryan Gates, who is the producer for Schopp and The Bulldog will be Murphy's Co Host

Where did you see this?  Ryan Gates is hilarious in his current role as producer.  I feel that his whit would be suppressed in a partnership with John Murphy.

  12. I'm glad you didn't include the name, because it'd be fun to see who can guess this guy first. One of the only images of him in that sweater that I could find, and I had never heard of him before looking him up for this thread

I agree on the non-disclosure of names -- it will be fun for some of the obscure ones.

Obscure fun fact: The player pictured for #83 also wore three other numbers as a Sabre.

  13. Cal Petersen was rock solid, as he usually is. He's got to be viewed as our best prospect netminder at this point, right?

I, too, am curious if anyone has any more insight on Petersen.  Looks like he started all 34 games in net for Notre Dame in his sophomore season last year, and performed very well.  Is his ceiling high enough to get excited / keep a close eye on him?
