  1. Six-way tie for 11th in the conference.. that is, the bottom six teams all have 49 points.

At this time, it is looking like the targets should be PHI and BOS at 54 points (BUF has TWO [edit] and FOUR [edit] games in hand), rather than the third spot in the division (OTT and TOR at 57 and 55, each with ONE [edit] game in hand on the Sabres).

As far as I'm concerned, there are five teams that are basically un-catchable (WAS, CBJ, PIT, and NYR in the Metro, and MTL in our Atlantic), although any of them could still slip.  The teams mentioned in the above paragraphs will have losing streaks, and the teams at the bottom with BUF will have winning streaks.  We need to just enjoy the ride.

  2. Is this the WJC that is being hosted by Buffalo and has an outdoor game in early January? Or am I getting my years mixed up?

TrueBlue is correct that it is the 2018 WJC, but it's worth mentioning that it is in fact one year from now - it begins Dec. 26, 2017.

Edit: And, the outdoor game at New Era Field is actually on Friday, December 29, 2017.

  3. Merry Christmas, y'all.

Came here to re-post this gem from TBD: http://www.torontosun.com/2012/12/06/bad-santa-insults-three-year-old

“The first thing he tells my son is, ‘Oh, you look like Paul Bunyan,' ” she said. “Really? Is that appropriate?

“Then he said, ‘Oh, you’re wearing a Toronto Maple Leafs tuque, you shouldn’t be wearing that, they suck.’ At that point, I took my son and told him we should go, Santa isn’t being very good today.”

  4. On breakaways you have guys chasing you from you behind so you can't meander in and wait out the goalie.

That said, a guy like Jacob Silfverberg (ranks 4th overall in shootout % the previous 5 season) typically comes in with a ton a speed and shoots from the hash marks.    In his case, he comes in so fast that the goalie needs to back up in his net, making himself vulnerable to a quick accurate shot from the high slot.

IMO the worst setup is come in at a consistent average pace straight at the goalie.    Either come in slow and wandering, fast and straight, change speed, or take a wide angle to the net.    P Kane typically comes in with speed then slams on the brakes and dekes.    It's the change of pace that makes it difficult for goalies to judge how quickly to back up towards the net and exposes holes.

Nice.  I imagine that since a change in speed causes the goalie to react, the shooter then has a couple of of moves/options based on what the goalie's reaction is.

  5. I never understand when people say they left because of a political thread.  If you don't like what's being said, don't open it and stick to the hockey threads.  I left the PPP threads because it just became a den of personal insults whenever I gave my left of center views.  And if the political thread was left unlocked, the commentary wouldn't end up in non-political threads.

While I agree with your first two sentences here, it may also be that people are leaving because they have to wade through four feet of sewage to get to the hockey content.

That said... I don't intend to complain, because I also don't offer any solution.  I do trust that the mods' intentions are good.

  6. If coaches were given the choice of a penalty shot or a power play, it would be a pretty tough call. Lots of variables. But penalty shots were only converted about 28% of the time last season (a bit lower than in previous seasons).

    http://sports.stackexchange.com/questions/2635/which-is-more-likely-to-result-in-a-goal-a-penalty-shot-or-a-power-play

Cool stats, I'd often wondered about the comparison, but apparently not enough to actually go do some homework on it.

As you said, there are a lot of variables.  I'd like to think you'd choose a PP over penalty shot for a number of reasons: goalie matchup, to slow down pace of the game...  Let's say you're up by one goal with 4:00 left in the third period; a 2:00 man advantage will give you a better chance to win the game, I'd think.

  7. 2nd oldest player ever to make NHL debut age 30..

Nice.  I just had to look up the record after seeing your post.  Check out a sweet Age Distribution graph here: http://www.quanthockey.com/Distributions/RookieAgeDistribution.php

Connie Madigan was 38 when he made his debut in 1972-73 for the Blues:

The honor of the oldest first timer goes to Hugh Lehman who played as a goalie for the Chicago Black Hawks in the 1926‑27 season. Despite being in his 40s he played respectable 44 games during the season, only to retire after the following season. Officially, Connie Madigan holds the record for the oldest rookie, since Hugh Lehman had a notable pro career prior to the establishment of the NHL.

  8. I just want to say that Risto banging his stick for the puck in OT really bothered my. Okposo probably has the best hockey vision on the team. Does Risto really think he doesn't know he's there? All banging the stick did was let everyone else know he was there. It was a pretty green move.

I have to find the story of another vet who purposely didn't pass the puck to the new guy because he tapped his stick (for the life of me I can't remember who it was but they both were/ended up superstars).

Sometimes calling for the puck, or letting the other team know you are in a threatening spot, might cause the other team some confusion and/or open up an opportunity for your teammate though, no?

  9. For those in Rochester: I recently found the Exchange Sports Bar, where Nathaniel's used to be, just south of Blue Cross Arena.  Their wings were incredible - spot on!  (Note: sample size = one.)

Has anyone checked out the new Duff's in Henrietta (Rochester)?
