  1. I don't disagree with any of this, but once the Sabres found themselves in that spot they were faced with picking top 6 capable centers off the top 6 center tree which of course doesn't exist, or attempt to acquire them via trade or FA. Buffalo plays with one hand tied behind their back in each of those areas.

I can tell you with great certainty that the Sabres acknowledgement of their inability to compete on a level playing field with other teams in the FA and trade route method of team building was a deciding factor in their ultimate decision to blow it up and tank.

Agreed this wasn't Murray's fault, just advocating that they don't make the same mistake again.

And only agree they played with one hand behind back until ownership issues were resolved.  Yet Darcy grabbed two D his last year.  Just saying there were opportunities that were missed and the excuse that top 6 centers were not out there is a myth imo.  Just difficult to obtain and DR never put enough priority on them to the Sabres detriment even after purse strings were removed.  Heck he got Erhoff, Regier and Boyes and spent wildly on Leino a redicolous mistake.  I am saying to DR, it wasn't a priority and couldn't ID a center given a C two e's and two r's.

  2. We have been drafting centers and the jury isn't really out. Sam Reinhart will be at least a 2nd line NHL center.

Only one has worked out and he is a 2/3 line center in Girgenson, I hope you are right abt Sam, but that only gives that Sabres 1 plus a maybe and a future McEichel assuming they finish last. They drafted one that doesnt look like he is going to turn out and some in the 2nd round that who knows while drafting a lot of D unnecessarily when there was such a glaring hole in the middle. Again, Sabres need to draft centers in first till they are at least 5 deep, 2 for certain one checking and 2 developing. Only then will I get off this drumbeat.

As others are betting on another thread Sam won't be ready till midway next year at earliest... That is not a guarantee and Sabres are still without a number 1-2 center only developing them. Keep drafting them

  3. I get what you're saying, but the Sabres Center depth right now (in not exact order): Reinhart, Girgensons, Grigorenko, Ennis*, Hodgson*, McCormick. If you add #1-2 pick this year, that goes to the front of the line. Starred players probably don't end up playing center, but they are there. In any case, we have 4-5 NHL Centers (maybe you upgrade CodyMc in FA, and maybe Grigs busts). If there's a center later in the first that you think will make a good winger, maybe. Otherwise I'd be on the looking for RW, since the cupboard is pretty bare there.

I am fine with that as long it is a goal scorer and not a D.

Sam Reinhart will be fine, we really need to drop this weird myth that he won't work. I personally don't know what you mean by 'tear down' but Reinhart is part of the rebuild. Our first pick will hopefully be 1 of the two centers. Our other 1st round pick should be the best player available. It doesn't have to be a center.

I have high hopes for Sam, but then Grigerenko gave us high hopes, just saying keep drafting Cs till a couple hit and then keep looking for hidden gems.
  4. I think the Sabres use a pick on Sam Reinhart for that second center. ;)

Sam is part of tear down... Too little to late and no guarantee he works out, I still use first two pics on centers.

I completely agree. If the Sabres had a legitimate #2 and #3 center there would never had been the need for the Tank, and Ennis probably would still be on the wing. A #1 center is like a NFL quaterback to me, hard to come by and if you don't have one you're always looking for one.

And even if you do you are always looking for another.

  5. Perhaps, if you can magically transform Buffalo into a place where FA's want to come and rarely available impact players don't put on their no trade list.

Disagree, Sabres dragged their feet going after centers and then paid for it. Darcy miscaculated the importance of centers thus requiring tear down. D wasnt and wouldnt have been bad, but he kept drafting D no 1. Myers, Pysk, Z and Risto all good choices, but very little high end offensive talent... Darcy couldnt spot a goal scorer if you spotted him an s and r. So this where we are left. TM needs to draft 2 centers 1 then find another in 2nd and then 2 D with goalies and chances on unkowns later on. McEichel cant be only center taken.

  6. Realistic lineup. Your 3rd and 4th lines would not score a combined 40- 50 goals.

Reinhart is still a big question mark to me.

True and the wild card out there are these AHLers currently up with the team.  Does any of them have a breakout during the final 18 games and make the team next year.  Larsson is the obvious choice, but I wonder if someone like Dalpe or even Varone who is getting a good look, opens eyes and really shines???

  7. Brief documentary on McDavid. Seems unbelievably focused and mature for a kid his age.

Tin Foil Party, put your hats on and unite at around the 12-13 minute mark. (He's real close to the son of the family he lives with in Erie; the kid is a big Sabres fan. Shows a bunch of clips of McDavid and him playing knee hockey with Sabres gear)

    http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x2dma4n_connor-mcdavid-transitions_sport

Quite a kid... P.S. McDavid suffered a boxers fx of the 5th metatarsal....  Pretty common in hockey, fighting, and any stick, hand, ball type of sport.  They heal well especially with younger guys... So it really wasn't a big deal despite the drama.

  8. I don't normally play the EA Sports GM UFA game on the forum, but just for fun:

    1) Offer Marty St Louis a two year deal.  Great inspiration.  Awesome off-ice leader for the kids.  Still produces as a top-six right winger.  Trade him at the end to TBL to retire as a Bolt, if he wants.

    2) Do some analytics and determine if Niemi or Fasth or Ramo or Gustavsson are worth going after.  If so, sign one to a three year deal.  Don't consider offer sheeting Holtby, despite his recent upturn. If all else fails, we must trade for a goaltender.

    3) Figure out what Cody Hodgson's role is.  If he's not a top-three center, consider signing Mike Fisher.

    4) If we still need 3rd line depth, maybe depending on Kaleta's role, have a conversation with Stewart,

    This is what you get:

    Kane-McEichel-St Louis

    Moulson-Girgensens-Ennis

    Foligno-Fisher-Stewart

    Deslauriers-Hodgson/Grigorenko-Gionta

    (plus McCormick and Kaleta)

    (not in order:)

    McCabe-Bogosian

    Gorges-Pysyk

    Ristolainen-Zadorov

    (plus Weber)

    Niemi/Fasth/Ramo/Gustavsson/trade

    Johnson

Very loosely, about $15M in new UFA contracts (if we sign a goalie).

That's a very young and very physical defense behind a gritty, veteran group of forwards leading highly talented young forwards.

St. Louis' wife and her family is from Greenwich CT, he ain't moving either

  9. Hi Jeanbe!  Are you woman too?  I am woman too.

To me it seems, sadly... you may still be fighting little voice in your head that tells you what is right and what is wrong.  It is called Conscience.  All of pro-tank propaganda, media, and fan-pressure in World will not shut voice up.  Little voice says something about this is wrong.  Something just does not make sense.

If you obey little voice, and cheer for your teams players to beat other teams players, your conscience will be clean again.  And, between us girls, nobody will blame you for cheering for home team to win.  Fate rests in hands of players on the ice.  To blame you for win is highly illogical, even according to very advanced statistics.  You play insignificant role in outcome, and bear mathematical equivalent of 0% responsibility.

On the other hand, if you disobey conscience and root for team to lose, you are ignoring damage to players and coaches careers for self-interest.  It is because you are promised a bill of goods - knowledge, wealth, McEichel, and happiness - for disobeying your conscience.

You stand to lose very much by disobeying your conscience.  I refer to Adam and Eve.  I think you are now seeing the early results of what I call Paradise Lost phenomenon.  Fans who cheer for loss are able to enjoy neither loss or win.  It will get worse, even if we draft number one.   Promised bill of goods is not delivered till Parade.  You will not be content with just pick in draft.

Look at me  , cheering for wins, no longer upset at losses.  Happy when we score!  :D   Oh well  :oops:when team scores against.  It is Paradise.

Look at tankers   cheering for losses, no longer thankful for wins.  Angry when we score!    Dogmatically snarky  <_< when team scores against.  It is Hell.

I do feel sorry for fans who feel they must ignore conscience to fit in, or believe in bill of goods on promise of delivery at unspecified future date.  They are real victims.

There is also this logic: that you are rooting against the people on the ice who are representing your city.  Why?  Because people, who claim to be wisdom, tell you that you should root against players, or will be stupid  I call these people collectively, Serpent.

I will not think anyone is weirdo for living game-by-game hoping for each win.  What I do think is weird, is great masses of people, jumping on current bandwagon to make believe place they tell you.  I would recommend elementary book on logic to this Serpent promising Hockey Heaven, if we lose.

Consider this.  This is called Fallacy of Affirming the Consequent.  If you are in Canada, you are in North America;  You are in North America, therefore you are in Canada.  (but I'm in Buffalo! - No, stupid, you have been proven irrefutably to be in Canada).

The Penguins tanked and had success.  You are tanking, therefore, you will have success.

Also, why do they need your support in losing?  Because without your support, people in charge of Sabres would bear full responsibility for plan not working out.  With your support, you Jeanbe can be blamed for going along with whole thing.

Long winded way of saying tanking doesnt guarantee success and it didnt have to be done. On the first true, on the second once darcy didnt replace the team with talented centers tanking imo was inevitable, just want the job done right and be finished this year.

  10. I think the culmination of the tear down buys much needed time.  Wherever we draft we will be adding a significant talent, possibly two.  We will restock the cupboards with the later rounds.  There are heir apparent s who now have lanes that allow them to move up and take positions on the roster.  We have cap space and assets to deal still deal.  Why I realize people will want to leverage all of this for immediate success next year, it is not a necessity but rather a luxury.  We can allow the maturation process to take place and if a deal presents itself we can take advantage.  We will no longer be reacting, we can be proactive or not.  I look to 2016 where there seems to be a bounty of UFA's that may hit the market.  Also, teams may need cap relief this summer, cough Chicago, so bargains could be had.  Now that the lot has been leveled and a foundation is taking shape, this team has options that give me great hope for the future.  And in the end every season is about hope and faith.  My hope is back and my faith is growing.

The FA info is hopeful. Again, need to see actions twds significant improvement the next two years.

  11. I think Murray will have an active draft but this team cannot afford any more 3+ for 1 style trades. What scares me with any ROR style deal is it will take a few current players, prospect, and pick to complete. We just don't have the organizational depth. I would have thought after this massive 2+ year selloff we would have more assets but I just don't see it. Ennis, Bogo, Moulson, Kane, and Gorges are now are vets. Foligno, Deslauriers are guys who could be around for awhile but are not difference makers.

    Then we have:

Girgs/Risto - so far the two best players to come out of this rebuild. Both will have long productive careers and be part of the new core.

Zadarov - could go either way. Could be top 4 dman for next 10-15 years. Clearly not mature yet. Will Murray ride it out or lose patience and include him in summer deal?

THAT IS PRETTY MUCH IT ON THE BIG CLUB!!

Reinhart - should have good/above average career. Do not see superstar talent but should be a rock for next 15 years.

Grigorenko - huge question mark that will probably be involved in a future trade.

Pysyk/ McCabe - our final two defensive prospects that should be with big team next year.

Carrier/Fasching/Bailey/Baptiste/Cornel/Compher - maybe two of these guys become everyday NHL players.

Goalie - we have some prospects but nothing to count on.

2015 draft - one impact player who is hopefully the superstar that all this tanking has been for. Then a late first and a few seconds to add to our prospect pool that may help a few years down the road. The Islanders having a big year has hurt.

So based on that I am not sure how I feel. I know I will feel better this time next year but I am hardly convinced that we have laid down the foundation of a Stanley Cup team.

Agreed, more trades of prospects or current players is not team building, giving up to much for ROR or any other player without retaining enough talent of current crop is just moving dirt around not really cleaning anything up. I want to see team building from here on out. That being said Hogson can be had for a wooden stick imo.
  12. Why do you think it is hyperbole? It is what Buffalo does. Fans get up and arms about the pennies and lose sight of the dollars. Saw a game a couple years back when my 25 year old STH nephew posts on facebook while at the game that he hopes to never to see Matt Ellis in a Sabres uniform again. Matt Ellis. When Matt Ellis is a problem on your team then you have no real problems. The board melted down when Tim Kennedy wasn't re-signed. Tim Kennedy is a pimple on the ass of Buffalo Sabres history. It's all overreaction.

The players dealt today were insignificant in the grand scheme of things as well as any missed opportunities in returns. A second in 2017 will probably be flipped next year and you'll get your return. The cards didn't fall exactly our way this time. Big deal. The franchise is moving forward on a grander path than the year in which we get a second round pick.

All I can say is it better be, because like an ass pimple, it doesnt always feel better when it pops, sometimes the oil spreads and creates more pimples. Jury is out and this one is still painful.

    This is metaphorical not hyperbole.

  13. Yes, Nolan is signed till the end of the 16-17 season.

I can't wait for Draft day. Not just to see McDavid putting on a Buffalo Jersey, but there will be a lot of trades too. Who knows what Murrays plans are. We might acquire a solid goalie and a solid RW and be a bubble team. Yes break ups are tough, but the future is bright and we have plenty to look forward to! Will we suck next year? Most likely, but hey, when you hit rock bottom, there is only one place to go. I'm looking forward to being able to see this core grow into an NHL powerhouse. Rebuilding will always have its flaws, and it will always be a risk, but you have to risk it to get the biscuit.

My fear with trading Neuvirth and Stewart, and in a couple days i guess i will see its wisdom, is that the what Sabres gave up did not get enough in return...

Also sometimes when you get what you want there is always a little buyers remorse, because you are still resentful for being put in this position in the first place.

So until April briefly with confirmation or not Tank is successful and June's draft it truly will be tough. At least beer league spring season starts tonite and I can pull a Big Z and just hit someone regardless????

  14. So how many NHL players do you think we will get with picks from trades?

I think advanced statistics say .45 NHL player, in exchange for 4 NHL players.  I am just trying to be realistic.

What do you advanced stat experts think?

That is why i was disapointed with Stu deal, would rather a porospect back not pick. The rest are questionable as well.

  15. GMTM achieved his number # 1 goal today which was making our odds even better to get McEichel.

It's easy to say Darcy would have received more based on his past history because he had a tendency to wait until he could make the "perfect" trade. This tendency is why we're in the mess we're in now. Plus, you can only get so much for garbage. And we can re-sign Neuvirth and Stewart if we want for nothing.

Long shots at best, I give him a c plus because Bogosian trade with a B if Kane turns out, but a D for deadline day underwhelming would have kept Stewart unless deemed cancer in lockeroom.
